Hello everyone,

The Call for Papers for the Smart Homes devroom at FOSDEM 2027 is open! Join us on Sunday 31 January, 09:00–13:00, in Brussels.

This developer room brings together the open-source projects, protocols and communities that make open, interoperable, local-first and vendor-independent smart homes possible.

We invite maintainers, contributors and experienced practitioners to share technical insights, integrations and lessons learned. We’re particularly interested in talks that connect projects and ecosystems, return control of cloud-dependent devices to users, or reveal what keeps a smart home working reliably over time.

Topics include:

All proposals must relate directly to smart homes or home automation. Project introductions are welcome: go beyond features to explain the problem you solve, how your project fits into the wider ecosystem and what others can learn. Talks must focus on open-source technologies and technical substance; product pitches and marketing presentations are out of scope.

We offer two formats: standard talks with a 25-minute presentation, and short talks with a 10-minute presentation, both followed by Q&A.

Submit your proposal by 24 November 2026 at 23:59 CET:
https://fosdem.org/submit

Please select “Smart Homes” in the “track” drop-down menu.

All talks are in English and in person. Sessions will be live-streamed and recorded, with recordings published under CC BY 4.0. Speakers cover their own travel and accommodation costs.

We’ll organise two online speaker meetups before FOSDEM to help speakers connect, explore links between their talks and prepare their sessions.

Please share this invitation with anyone who has something valuable to contribute.

We look forward to your proposals!

With kind regards,
Maarten Raeymaekers, Arjen Moermans, Joost Lekkerkerker and Olivier Daury
