Call for Participation: Ruby Devroom at FOSDEM 2027
We are excited to announce the Call for Participation for the Ruby devroom at FOSDEM 2027, taking place on Saturday 30 Jan 2027, from 09:00 to 12:45, at the Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. 【 About the Devroom 】 Ruby has been a joyful, expressive language for three decades, and it is so much more than Rails. Ruby powers command line tools, static site generators, infrastructure automation, data pipelines, game engines, embedded systems through mruby and PicoRuby, and a growing set of alternative implementations like JRuby, TruffleRuby, and natively compiled experiments. The language itself keeps moving forward: YJIT and ZJIT, Ractors, Prism as the new parser, RBS and type tooling, and ongoing work on memory, garbage collection, and concurrency. The community that surrounds it keeps growing too, from long-time maintainers to newcomers who find in Ruby a welcoming place to learn and build. Ruby is also quietly doing a lot of good in the world. Food banks, shelters, diaper banks, and other social service organizations run on open source Ruby applications maintained by volunteers. These projects raise their own questions about sustainability, onboarding new contributors, and building software that serves people with limited resources. This devroom is a gathering place for Ruby maintainers, contributors, users, and the curious to share what they are building, learn from each other, and talk about where the language and its ecosystem are headed. 【 Submission Guidelines 】 We welcome talks on any topic with a substantial technical or community focus on Ruby, including but not limited to: ※ Ruby internals, performance, JIT compilers, and alternative implementations ※ Tooling: parsers, type checkers, linters, language servers, debuggers, and profilers ※ RubyGems, Bundler, and the health of the gem ecosystem ※ Ruby outside of web development: CLIs, embedded, scientific computing, games, and creative coding ※ Running Ruby in production at any scale ※ Open source Ruby for social good, nonprofit software, and civic tech ※ Maintaining, funding, and sustaining Ruby projects and communities ※ Teaching Ruby and welcoming new contributors Important dates: ※ 25 Oct 2026 Call for proposals opens ※ 01 Dec 2026 Submissions close at 23:59 UTC ※ 04 Dec 2026 Selected speakers notified ※ 07 Dec 2026 Schedule published Some things to remember during talk submission: ※ Please select "Ruby" as the track in the dropdown menu. ※ We suggest including a brief bio for each speaker, along with links to any related previous work or projects. ※ Talks will be 20 minutes long by default.
