Hello, I should now be buying my tickets to the event but I can't decide if I will participate on the beer event or not.. therefore what dates I should choose. How many people are usually showing up? From the descriptions I've read so far it seems that there are quite a few.. But the more important question is whether smoking is allowed in pubs in Belgium? I am personally a non-smoker and cannot really tolerate smoke, so if it is allowed then I am afraid I have a definitive choice.. I hope this wasn't asked before.. Thanks, Gabor

Very, very very many...

Sadly: yes. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list. BOFH Excuse #418: Sysadmins busy fighting SPAM.

Just stay outside, which is where the most interesting discussions take place anyway :). When someone else goes inside to get another beer, just have him bring one for you. Problem solved. --Benny.
Smoking was allowed in bars in Belgium last year, and I've not heard that things have changed. You can always hang around outside the pub though! That's an understatement. The main bar itself is rather large. Across the street, there's a second building (smaller, but still considerably large) which belongs to the same business. Last year and the year before, we managed to fill not only both places, but also the alley in between. To such an extent that they employed security last year (who were standing near the entrance of the alley), who would regularly ask people to wait a while before entering the area, because it was too crowded otherwise.
But the more important question is whether smoking is allowed in pubs in Belgium? I am personally a non-smoker and cannot really tolerate smoke, so if it is allowed then I am afraid I have a definitive choice..
It is allowed, but only if no food is served in the bar and, of course, the bar owner does not forbid it otherwise. The Delirium Café does not serve food (other than things like nuts etc, which the law does not apply to), so the law does not forbid it. -- The biometric identification system at the gates of the CIA headquarters works because there's a guard with a large gun making sure no one is trying to fool the system. http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2009/01/biometrics.html

_If_ the Fosdem organizers want to regulate such a thing, I am sure they are packing enough economic punch to have said bar forbid smoking during that night. I seem to remember a rather vivid discussion about this topic one or two years back. Personally, I think that the smokers have the alley for the short time they want to smoke whereas the non-smokers have to sit in the smoke all the time. Richard

But only if the FOSDEM organizers want to alienate the (not insignificant) segment of attendees who feel they should be poisoning themselves and others.

Yes - and last year, and the year before, and every year. Let's not have it again please. The horse is very dead by now. Bottom line: FOSDEM is an open source conference, not a healthy lifestyle conference. While we strive to provide a healthy atmosphere conductive to the productive exchange of technical information, we certainly can't guarantee it. Especially not at the beer event. By design, the beer event is somewhere people can let their hair down. If that involves setting fire to poisonous plants for some people, we can't help that. People's social inclinations are none of our business.
Personally, I think that the smokers have the alley for the short time they want to smoke whereas the non-smokers have to sit in the smoke all the time.
I agree that it would be very nice if smoking attendees had the spontaneous reflex to take their poisons outside (many do - and I appreciate it), but we (FOSDEM) can't enforce it. We have a conference to organize. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list. Whatever can go to New York, will.

Yep, maybe the beer event should be alcohol-free to prevent people from poisoning themselves and others... Christophe

Never mind the fact that oxygen is also poisonous. Kills you 24 hours a day. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list. Even water tastes bad when taken on doctors orders.
Ok guys, no need to argue. I asked a question, I appreciate the answers. The fact is acknowledged and life goes on. We enjoyed occassionally going out to eat in pubs in England, after they became smoke free. We can't do the same in Austria, as 2 people of out 3 has the habit of smoking (I guess..). Our solution is simple: we don't go to these places. End of story. On Tue, Feb 2, 2010 at 11:04 AM, Philip Paeps <philip@fosdem.org> wrote:

For what it's worth: Free software is about having a choice. FOSDEM explains very well that having a choice means you have to choose. Stappers Surely not FOSDEM, just part of FOSDEM
Thanks..I will try to keep an eye on that project. I am just trying to create a must see list, and the rest should just go with the flow.. Cheers.. On 02/05/2010 12:34 PM, David Baines wrote:

And the good news for non-smokers is that most likely it will be completely forbidden in a couple of years. -- Jan Claeys
