This email is a Call For Participation in the embedded, mobile and automotive devroom @FOSDEM 2021
Devroom date: 6th & 7th February 2021 in FOSDEM Online Venue CFP deadline: Friday, 23rd December 2020.
Final speaker confirmation on Thursday, December 31th 2018
CFP Introduction ---------------------------
Embedded software is transforming the world, and FOSS embedded software is leading the way. From automotive to the Internet of Things, launching rockets, messing with your phone or automating your toaster, small devices, embedded systems, and automatons are everywhere Join in and tell the world about your project!
This year FOSDEM is going to be an online event. All talks will need to be prerecorded and shared with FOSDEM organizers. Please only propose a talk that you're really able and willing to share.
Topics Sought ------------------------
The embedded devroom seeks topics related to automotive, industrial, mobile, consumer electronics, autonomous and generally embedded systems, either from a professional or hobbyist background. Topics such as operating systems (Linux, free RTOS), hardware platforms (from microcontrollers to microprocessors, FPGAs) and software stacks are welcome. Related areas are of course of interest as well and our definition of "embedded" is elastic.
CFP Schedule And Submission Details -----------------------------------------------------------
Please submit proposals no later than the 11th of December.
Please use the following URL to submit your talk to FOSDEM 2021
https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM21
and follow below rules:
* If you do not have an account yet, please create one, if you have submitted a talk in one of the previous years, please re-use your old account.
* Select as the Track "Embedded, mobile and automotive devroom"
* Select as the Event Type "Lecture"
* Include a title. (Note that "Subtitle" entry doesn't appear on all conference documents, so make sure "Title" can stand on its own without "Subtitle" present.)
* Include an Abstract of about 500 characters and a full description of any length you wish, but in both fields, please be concise, but clear and descriptive.
* Indicate whether you seek a 25, or 50 minute slot.
* Use the "Links" sub-area to your past work in the field you'd like to share.

Speakers will be uploading their prerecordings by 14th January which ought to give us enough time to avoid any problems like that. They'll all be converted into a standard format, reviewed, and played out using the same standard process. Alasdair

yes, this is to be expected. it should be made clear to the presenters that they need to take responsibility to perform the "conversion" so that the devroom organisers are not commmpletely overloaded with video conversions with only days to go. *there needs to be time allocated to this in the schedule* i have some ffmpeg conversion scripts which *sometimes* do the job. however i found that - don't laugh - uploading to youtube followed by using youtube-dl -f {insert suitable size format} did the conversion job extremely well and 100% reliably. the youtube videos may be marked as "sharable only if someone has the link" which keeps them from going public before FOSDEM actually goes live. l.

I hope there is and we will suggest some ways to do it (and do automated ffmpeg standardisation ourselves).

I'll be surprised if they make it onto youtube any time soon - last time it took months due to the low upload limits youtube chose to impose on us. (We used to have a large upload limit previously but they removed it presumably because we only do large uploads once a year, and all our attempts to obtain reinstatement fell on deaf ears.) Alasdair

that may be challenging (one size may not fit all) if i can illustrate why. attached ffmpeg_speedup.sh - you have to "invert" the number for the speed of the video and of the audio (1/x) *sigh*. this is useful if someone makes a talk that's simply too long but there's not time to redo it. don't go overboard: 1.25% speedup is just about on the limit. another one reduces the framerate (-rf 8) which *massively* gets the size of the upload down. if there's just some slides with huge fonts and no person walking around in it, setting "scale=640:-1" and "-r 2" will get even a 1 hour video down to under 40 MB which, given that some people are doing font sizes of 80px then naively recording 1080p60 and ending up with a 2GB file, this is a huuuge reduction. "-b:v 1600k" drops the mpeg quality, you do start to get artefacts over frame-changes that take a while to "recover" if you go down to say "-b:v 800k", however, again: if the size is only 640 wide nobody's going to notice. do note that the output format *changes* depending on the extension name (!). you get *different* CODECs engaged if you start from .mp4 and target .avi, than if you start from .mp4 and target .mp4. likewise with mkv. sigh. i have had best results with setting the destination to ".avi".
I'll be surprised if they make it onto youtube any time soon
individuals could do it (if they're not limited, had an account for a while). devroom organisers asking them, "this needs converting, can you upload it to youtube, we can grab it from there" is dead simple. if they don't have an account, then, well, *shrug*.
us. (We used to have a large upload limit previously but they removed it presumably because we only do large uploads once a year, and all our attempts to obtain reinstatement fell on deaf ears.)
sigh. presumably the spike was too high, they may not be able to cope with the transient load. and can't be bothered. by chance did you ask them, "would you like to sponsor FOSDEM?" l.

i can say that this is how XDC2020 was conducted (using freenode irc for chat). it was - and i am not kidding here - the best "conference" i have ever been to. far, *far* better than *any* "live" conference and i have been to several, in the past 25 years. why? it was very simple: i was able, during my *own talk*, to chat with the other attendees and give them "running commentary" (plus explanations of things i had missed, or stuff i knew was coming up). far from being a distraction this resulted in a lively debate, questions, jokes, quips and people wishing to engage and talk in break-out rooms, one of them for longer than the actual talk. i came away from the whole experience going "wow that was utterly frickin awesome and valuable". by total contrast, two other "online" conferences forced me to use a web-based system, with *no* fallback position for either chat or audio. despite warning the organisers that i would be unable to interact with anyone, and would be unable even to hear audio (i run jackd for real-time music composition: it prevents and prohibits *both* firefox *and* chrome from playing audio), they said - and this is not a joke: "we looked at it and we found nobody else with problems. we therefore conclude that because you are in the minority, we can't be bothered. if you have audio problems, you get to fix them yourself: sorry, but basically we don't care". as a result, one of them i didn't even bother to log in to hear my own talk. i leave those two wildly diametrically opposed experiences with you to consider. l.

That's the way which has been chosen by the conference organizers. As a good citizen we are not going to play against the rules set by FOSDEM organizers.
We organized Live Embedded Event (https://live-embedded-event.com <https://protect2.fireeye.com/v1/url?k=56c28c7a-0959b578-56c30735-0cc47a312ab0-fd10b67be651caf8&q=1&e=13b38111-b1a4-4025-8956-03afc702b86e&u=https%3A%2F%2Flive-embedded-event.com%2F>) some days ago (program attached) and live sessions were much better !
I'd love to have this as a live session in Brussels believe me! But as this is not possible we need to keep our devroom format consistent with the rest of FOSDEM. In contrast I may say that all recent LF conferences were organized in the same way that has been chosen by FOSDEM orgs and they were pretty successful.
