Apparently the visa fees are waived for people under 25 who travel to an event organised by a non-profit organisation Is FOSDEM incorporated as a non-profit entity and could this be added to the About page and also the FAQ info about visas? http://eeas.europa.eu/delegations/china/travel_to_eu/visa/index_en.htm It says there is an exemption from the visa fee for "representatives of non-profit organisations aged 25 years or less participating in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organised by non-profit organisations.".
Again, not staff, but first question in my head would be "are young visitors representatives of FOSDEM even if it itself is a non-profit?". The language seems to indicate people who represent a non-profit themselves, not those merely visiting an event organised by a non-profit. To me this suggests people like Red Cross volunteers, United Nations interns and many others in similar positions. If somebody is just a 20-year old interested in FLOS software they are probably not "representative of a non-profit organisation". If they are a contributor to a FLOSS project then the organisation behind the project might help (e.g. the Document Foundation if they contributed to LibreOffice, Mozilla -> quite a few projects, etc.). Consider for example somebody who did Google Summer of Code or Outreachy with one of those other non-profit organizations. So the question applies to a person (probably under 25) associated with (Debian|Document Foundation|Mozilla|whatever non-profit) coming to an event organized by a non-profit (FOSDEM). Regards, Daniel
Oh yeah, definitely fits then, if FOSDEM is non-profit. On 22 December 2015 at 11:38, Daniel Pocock <daniel@pocock.pro> wrote:

Yes, the organisation of the FOSDEM conference is supported by a non-profit organisation with the same name. This organisation can be found in the Belgian public registry at http://kbopub.economie.fgov.be/kbopub/toonondernemingps.html?lang=en&ondernemingsnummer=477085590 ("Association sans but lucratif" is French for "non-profit organisation") Regards, Johan

Thanks for clarifying that Could that name and registration number go on the footer of the web site perhaps? Then it will be clear for anybody who is looking into visas, potential sponsors, etc. Regards, Daniel -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQIcBAEBCAAGBQJWeUR5AAoJEGxlgOd711bEY+8P/2Y2DWTwSQ221bC7lM8t5x4g SCFUGU7fttWLaaNOqkadrVc8iv0th1ZGqHdqFfFWvhV9grYEpXbyfY5/Nhwc+aHr AVbdVLDEjgwDCKopNiYpT88TWWI/jpJ4LSovCcNYbnbt4q17xIBUHsCT7wK+xuWn bM5e882dDLkziR7HyCoqnWqA6PBl26APEZ6J4xVDfQFV/3r97dnvYsvqdifysQ7J JUlwHRYwGz/LyFBLsMsGNVZokuAB2MXMU13AiLYOgmhOAzCCRNZ95FPqh5jgCgdB +FvvwJq1+JntP4Y5a2A9SEe/JAoyO61SzaKwvTH8Ypes3InQ6IqkQ2MRTyUbICfo Ud1n3gYbVZNfalTS/7fXuKLn9xjsL+pqi721UIGveognIr8PbuCymlEFQ7yBkBi6 l9TOn3z42WK0W70HfQmc6GjXujCHwhblxtzrPzsavn9Ny86EcbHQEkQDau2Iab9N ktmgqTq+jf7EQCfYJpGw/OPd0PF3ZY3WK59drjHq+WeFqKF++beXPbxQH1nMIvbV 7atVH6CDEciHl/3WEELS44TIhYwyRORvLLF6uBBWz2LdLEGHrDLonu7nFcOvFG45 tNdPTPG2YQV+ArwbQ1cdTha83dU2NtI3Tn76iy1y+5zbPpjnFYQtr7tdhDoomjiX 3hyrMnf/wMAHzIZPs9SR =qalZ -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Yes, FOSDEM is organized by a VZW ("vereniging zonder winstoogmerk", the dutch form of ASBL, which is a format of legal person explicitly made for non-profit purposes). See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_without_lucrative_purpose (FOSDEM is not an ivzw, though)

A *representative* of a non-profit organisation is not the same thing as a conference organized *by* a non-profit organisation. It could still help if the person involved is indeed a representative of something that would qualify, but it's not something for every random person. -- It is easy to love a country that is famous for chocolate and beer -- Barack Obama, speaking in Brussels, Belgium, 2014-03-26
