You have correctly spotted a compromise we've made. There are several
reasons for that, some historical and some still very much valid. I trust
that in practice, you'll be able to (find someone to) deal with it.
FOSDEM video has grown ever more libre and open, but that progress has been
paused for now by the pandemic situation. It's hard enough organising a
virtual FOSDEM as is, so a further push ahead will have to wait until after
FOSDEM 2022.
Some things that should tell you how committed the FOSDEM video volunteers
are to free and open source software, should you be in any doubt about that:
- pioneering as free software as possible live video streaming at this
large scale
- nginx-rtmp packaging in Debian
- voctomix packaging in Debian
- mainline kernel on Allwinner A20
- building our own FOSS gear. 60 pieces of it. Remember the laser cut
wooden boxes?
- supported several free and open source conferences voluntarily, including
FOSSAsia, Openstreetmap's State of the Map, UbuCon, ...
- published our entire deployment setup (ansible)
- active outreach to c3voc and debconf video team
- reencoding all recorded videos in not just in mp4 (h264 video, aac
audio), but also webm (vp9 video, opus audio)
- active research of vp9 based live encoding and streaming solutions
- and many more
Thank you for your understanding.
Kind regards,
Mark
