Call for Papers FOSDEM 2027 - Green & Ethical Tech Devroom We invite everyone who is interested in Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) and wants to discuss environmental and social impacts of information technologies to join us at FOSDEM 2027 in Brussels for a day of conversations. We believe in building a technological future where we are considerate of the finite resources available on the Planet, respect human dignity and creativity, and leverage the real economics of software products to provide a livelihood for the many. We want to share experiences about information technologies that are environmentally sustainable, discuss legal, ethical, and environmental implications of generative AI, and address software-induced obsolescence. We also want to understand how the FLOSS community is preserving its collaborative ethos and ambition for building quality projects in times that value speed and automation over maintainability and resilience. We welcome contributions from FLOSS developers and users, as well as policymakers, journalists, artists, and activists. Contributions can be about specific software projects completed or in progress, community initiatives targeted at technical and non-technical audiences, art installations, public campaigns and events aimed at promoting dialogue about green end ethical technologies. Suggested topics - Green & Ethical Software - Sustainable web design - Sustainable software architecture and automation - Software-induced obsolescence - Eco-Labels for Software - Hardware - Environmentally sustainable hardware - Examples of hardware longevity - Recycle and reuse - Energy demands of datacenter setups - Communities / Initiatives - Communities of practice: Permacomputing, Low-Tech, Computing within Limits, etc. - AI policies adopted by FLOSS projects - Long-term project maintenance - Generative AI as an obstacle to collaboration - Examples of time-tested sustainable FLOSS projects Where FOSDEM 2027 (Brussels, 30-31 January 2027) The Devroom will take place on Saturday morning.
