OK to Do additional signage at FOSDEM?
Hello FOSDEM Team, The Community DevRoom will be located in Building U this year - and thank you very much for the larger room assignment! - and we found last year that it was a bit hard to find us. Would it be permissible for the Community DevRoom team to bring some sign stands to set out on the path to help visitors find us? We would, of course, clean up after ourselves and leave no additional trash for the staff and volunteers to deal with, because that's just rude. I was thinking we would buy some of these [0] and change them to say "caution, you're walking past the Community DevRoom" with an arrow towards the room. We would also list the DevRooms in Building U that are taking place on Sunday on the signage because we are loving, inclusive people who want to help everyone out. Please let me know if this would be all right. [0] - https://www.indiamart.com/proddetail/wet-floor-caution-stand-7535174133.html Cheers, LH -- Leslie Hawthorn http://twitter.com/lhawthorn

Similar question - crowd control was a challenge in the SDN Devroom last year. Particularly at the start of the day. Is it permissible we erect signage to designate an "Entry Only" door and "Exit Only" door? This would help manage entry/exit between talks. Ray K On 17/01/2020 12:01, Leslie Hawthorn wrote:

Please reply back to the list. The Community DevRoom has put these entry/exit signs on the doors in years past and didn't know it would be an issue. We also have folks on the doors so when talks start / end so we can skip the signs if it is needed. Thank you, LH

I assume any "Emergency Exit" sign (those green ones) supersedes any other type of sign when there is an emergency, and that any of those doors will be used for exiting in case of emergency. Even better if you have volunteers on each door to open the door and free the way to exit. Cheers Boriss

While that's a good idea, experience does tell me people will ignore the signs. You will still need a volunteer at every door. Kind regards, -- Peter van Dijk PowerDNS.COM BV - https://www.powerdns.com/

We have been doing this at the PostgreSQL devroom and it works very well. We don't put signs, but we have volunteers to guard the doors. At least one on each door, sometimes even two per door, one inside and the other outside (to help going out and prevent from coming in when the room is full). Another advantage of this system is that when a talk finishes, some people will leave the room, and we ask everyone to defrag. They will move from the "entry"-side to the "exit"-side filling in all the empty spaces. Like that, new people will find empty spots at the side of the room they are coming in. Cheers Boriss

Hello, I have some good news for you. This year, each building will have huge signs at each entrance, in the lift and on the stairs, with all devrooms and their floor (see attachment). So it should be easier to find you. That said, if you want to put up an extra sign pointing to your room, I see no issues. Just make sure you don't block any emergency exit/equipment or damage the walls (only paper tape, no duct tape). Pieter FOSDEM Signage Person Op 17/01/2020 om 12:57 schreef Mark Van den Borre:

The paint on the walls in lots of the buildings is of such bad quality it will even come off if you use painters tape. No signs on the walls. Only on surfaces that can deal with it. If you need extra signage please check with the building responsible or staff where you can put them. Thank you, Philippe

Will do, Philippe. I planned to bring extra painters tape for both the Community DevRoom and to leave at the volunteer desk for people who need it. Should I not bring extra? Saves me a trip to the hardware store, but I am very happy to bring more. Cheers, LH -- Leslie Hawthorn http://twitter.com/lhawthorn
