Hi all, We are pleased to announce that a number of hotels in Brussels are offering a discount to FOSDEM visitors. See the accommodation page (https://fosdem.org/2013/practical/accommodation/) for more information on which hotels and how to book. Kind regards, Wynke.

Unfortunately, the reservation form asks us to provide our "CVV code", ie the über-secret code printed on the back of my credit card, and I don't want to write this code on plain paper sent to anonynous eyes. Could this be changed? -- Nicolas LIMARE http://nicolas.limare.net/ pgp:0xFA423F4F

It should be clear to anyone that we did not create the forms... I suggest you just write: "will call" in the fields pertaining to your credit card details and phone them to confirm your reservation. That's what I always do when there's no properly secure way to book. If the hotel discount partnership proves to be sufficiently successful to repeat next year, we'll definitely talk with our partner about bringing their procedure into the 21st century. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Senior Reality Engineer Ministry of Information

A hint to everyone is to check directly with the hotel as well. I got 107 EUR/night at Royal Windsor when I booked now, but the FOSDEM discount rate is 115 EUR/night. /Simon

This is helpful to know. As pointed out before, this year is the first year we're working with the Brussels Booking Desk to negotiate discounts for visitors. Any comments (positive or negative) are welcome. Note that the difference between 115EUR and 107EUR sounds a lot like city tax. I would be interested to know if the rate you were quoted actually includes that. Some hotels like to charge it separately (you can guess how I feel about that practice). - Philip -- Philip Paeps Senior Reality Engineer Ministry of Information

I think that is a good idea -- don't be discouraged by my comment. My experience from other conferences is that "conference deals" are more often than not matched by direct hotel deals though. If you are spending significant time/money on arranging these hotel deals, you could consider if it is worth the effort.

My confirmation says "Room Rate: € 107,00 EUR includes tax and service charges" although what they actually will charge remains to be seen. /Simon

Beware of Hotel Ibis St Catherine: http://www.zoobab.com/boycott-the-hotel-ibis-in-brussels Check their terms and conditions first. -- Benjamin Henrion <bhenrion at ffii.org> FFII Brussels - +32-484-566109 - +32-2-3500762 "In July 2005, after several failed attempts to legalise software patents in Europe, the patent establishment changed its strategy. Instead of explicitly seeking to sanction the patentability of software, they are now seeking to create a central European patent court, which would establish and enforce patentability rules in their favor, without any possibility of correction by competing courts or democratically elected legislators."

That goes without saying, for every hotel, anywhere in the world. Or indeed for anything at all. Do you sign contracts without reading them? Often, if you do not guarantee a reservation with a credit card, the hotel will reserve the right to cancel your reservation if you don't turn up before a certain time (or call and confirm that you will in fact be turning up). - Philip -- Philip Paeps Senior Reality Engineer Ministry of Information
