Running a GSM BTS at fosdem ?
Hi, Back in november/december, I made a request to the IBPT for a special temporary GSM licence. I was originally planning to use it in a talk on GSM but my proposal wasn't selected. Since the authorization has now been granted (and paid for), it'd be a waste not to use it The idea would just to have a single BTS running a small demo network with just A4 sheets around pointing to a website for more infos, no stand or anything. Can this be arranged on short notice ? Who should I talk to for details ? Cheers, Sylvain
Hi Sylvain,

I'm sorry, but in my opinion this is too last minute. There are logistical (where to put this set-up, provide power), technical (how can we be absolutely sure it won't interfere?) and administrative (request permission from ULB) issues that cannot be dealt with this late in the game. Regards, Jan-Frederik FOSDEM

Actually - if there is BIPT approval for a transmitter in the GSM spectrum on the ULB campus, we don't really need further permission from ULB (while they control the builds, they don't control the radio spectrum). My main concern is logistics. I doubt you have BIPT approval to accept IMSIs not registered with you. How will you get people to register? Secondly, I have doubts about the utility. As JF mentioned, it's way too late to set up anything meaningful in the way of SIP to connect the GSM network to the rest of the world. I suggest we keep this idea in mind for next year. Having our own GSM network at the conference certainly has some benefits, but it needs to be set up with a bit of forethought if it's going to be successful. Could you please coordinate with network@ next year? - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list. BOFH Excuse #121: halon system went off and killed the operators.

I actually talked with some people off the list and this year there will be only limited closed testing to make the network planning for next year.

I do have proper IBPT licence for 3 BTS for the DCS1800 spectrum around 1748 MHz for demonstration purposes, valid only this week end and limited to the ULB site.

Yes, this is why there will be only range testing not open to the public this year. No time to setup anything useful in the remaining timeframe. I wasn't too sure the licence would be granted since GSM is usually tightly controlled. I requested the licence end november and they only answered yesterday, so I thought it would not go trough and I didn't really prepare anything ...
I suggest we keep this idea in mind for next year. Having our own GSM network at the conference certainly has some benefits, but it needs to be set up with a bit of forethought if it's going to be successful.
Indeed.
Could you please coordinate with network@ next year?
Yup, already doing that now. Cheers, Sylvain
Opps, forgot to answer one question :

The same thing that @ 26c3. Basically people have to pre-register on a website. Either their IMEI (via *#06#), or their IMSI if they know it. Then on the network, when a phone tries to register : - We ask for both IMSI & IMEI - If the IMSI is allowed, we accept the user - If the IMEI is allowed, we mark the current IMSI as allowed in the DB and accept the user - If none of the above, we send a temporary congestion error. (the phone will then try other operators / bts and work normally). Cheers, Sylvain
Ok, where on the site do you pre-register? - Nicolas 2010/2/3 <246tnt@gmail.com>

Ok, I will look forward to it next year then! ;) - Nicolas On Wed, Feb 3, 2010 at 11:34 PM, Sylvain Munaut <246tnt@gmail.com> wrote:

You misunderstood, this is the plan for next year. No time this year to prepare all of this.

Hi All, we can provide the necessary network equipment for this, as Nokia. I finally got management approval and commitment. So please, let me or Mikhail (in Cc:) know what are the requirements. I know we are short in time... but we will try to involve as well some guys for the Mobile DEVROOMs, with someone from the Meego teams. I know there was a discussion as well for the booths, Mikhail will be our contact person as Nokia for sponsorship of the event. I will be the tecnical contact for equipment and other things we might provide to the FOSDEM event setup. cheers, Guido Serra System Engineering team, Location Services, Nokia/Berlin 2010/2/2 Sylvain Munaut <246tnt@gmail.com>:

Hello Guido. Thank you for your kind offer, but please read through the discussion from earlier this week again. I'm afraid that it is too late for this year's edition to provide a GSM network. For one thing, we do not have a GSM licence and it is much too late in the game to procure one. The local regulatory authority is not known for its expedience in such matters.

Could you please get in touch with me off-list so we can see what we can do next year. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list.
