Meetup for mail server admins on Saturday @ 15:30
Hi All, on Saturday we're organising a meetup for mail server admins, to discuss challenges and solutions around running independent mail servers / networks. It's a casual get together: meeting at the indoor entrance to the cafe in Building F at 15:30. Contact details and Telegram + WhatsApp group links are included below. https://lightmeter.io/fosdem-2020-meetup/ Delivery is getting harder! Looking forward to seeing you there. Sam.

Yes, looking forward to see you. Question I'll bring: Will we have a mailinglist? Regards Geert Stappers Retransmitting a good idea -- Silence is hard to parse

Actually we managed to book a BoF room for the meetup in H.3242 (thanks to this list for the suggestion). So I will meet by the cafe in the hall as previously planned then migrate to the booked room. Until 15.30 🙂 On 1 February 2020 07:58:40 CET, Geert Stappers <stappers@stappers.nl> wrote:

Thanks to everybody who participated in our meetups, and to FOSDEM for providing the BoF room! In the end there were two sit-downs, and they proved productive for we 25 or so participants. There was demand for a permanent communication channel on our subject of mail server administration and deliverability, and so, here is a shiny new Discourse instance for this purpose: https://discuss.lightmeter.io <https://discuss.lightmeter.io/> Discourse (the software running the forum at the above address) is featureful and convenient, with easy searching, bookmarking, forwarding, editing, and more for posts and threads. Here are categories for: - Email deliverability (<https://discuss.lightmeter.io/c/deliverability-questions/7>) - Mailserver tech (<https://discuss.lightmeter.io/c/mailserver-tech-discussion/8>) - Other email-related news (<https://discuss.lightmeter.io/c/email-news/6>) For those of you who prefer mailinglists: discourse can also be used this way, with support for email-based submission of new topics and replies to them. I'm still configuring that however (incompatible versions of OpenSSL, boo!), so for now email notifications work, soon to be followed by submit-by-mail too. Some initial topics that may be of interest: - List of spam checker tools (<https://discuss.lightmeter.io/t/spam-checker-tools/19>) - External tools for testing mailserver setup (<https://discuss.lightmeter.io/t/external-tools-for-testing-mailserver-setup/18>) - How will Google’s AMP affect deliverability? (<https://discuss.lightmeter.io/t/how-will-googles-amp-affect-deliverability/27>) - Interesting mail clients (<https://discuss.lightmeter.io/t/interesting-mail-clients/22>) What questions would you like to ask the group? Login with GitHub, Facebook, or plain old email, and post away. Message me directly if you have any problems. Sam. PS Sorry for the delay; I went through three (VPS) servers and wrestled with a variety of copies of Mailman 3 before deciding that Discourse was a better option. PS Consider forwarding this other mail admins who'd find it useful On 1 February 2020 11:59:56 GMT+01:00, Sam Tuke <mail@samtuke.com> wrote:

sam... i, ah... i've been running debian, exim4, mailman, fail2ban, greylistd, virtual domains, and at one point even integrated with cyrus2.2, running my mail server now continuously since 2006, and i didn't have any difficulties at all following the instructions on how to set up mailman with debian and exim4. if i may be... ah... how can i put this... email sysadmins "giving up" on setting up a mailing list and setting up a *forum* instead, has me concerned. my (extensive) group project management experience immediately leads me to ask: where is the wiki which describes the (full) setup on the fosdem servers (including the config files), so that they can be reviewed, commented on, suggestions made, and improvements discussed? also, has a staging server been set up so that modifications can be tested out prior to going live? l.
Hi Luke, I'm not sure we've met, thanks for joining the discussion :) Happy to hear that these stalwart tools have been serving you well.
if i may be... ah... how can i put this... email sysadmins "giving up" on setting up a mailing list and setting up a *forum* instead, has me concerned.
The challenge described was solely with Mailman 3, otherwise known as the combination of: Mailman Core, Postorius, MailmanClient, HyperKitty, and HyperKitty Mailman plugin. Specifically: Docker images with hard-coded IP addresses, Podman storage layer incompatibilities, and a ruby script that died leaving few clues as to its murderer. No doubt with more time I would have resolved these, but those of us who met have been waiting long enough to continue those discussions. In any case Discourse was a better option from the start in my view, for the features which were mentioned - it has many tools for fostering and managing communities which other systems lack, and has extensive support for mailing-list-like interaction (submit topics by email, reply by email, forward all topics by email). I've also run mailman 2 for over a decade, and it's a reliable ally that's easy to configure. However that's not the best tool for this job. We are fortunate to have a variety of Open Source options in this space, and can each choose the tool which suits us best. Kind regards, Sam. On 11/02/2020 23:47, Luke Kenneth Casson Leighton wrote:

i took a path of least resistance (debian, plus incremental improvements), yet still it is tough as hell. scrambling to get hackers off my server during that exim4 exploit for example: luckily i have offsite rsync'd backups and was able to do a file-diff/cmp, and it was a VM anyway.

oo that's quite a list.
Specifically: Docker images with hard-coded IP addresses, Podman storage layer incompatibilities, and a ruby script that died leaving few clues as to its murderer.
*pained*. not at the mess, but at the use of docker images. a quick search "apt-cache search postorius" shows: mailman3-web - Django project integrating Mailman3 Postorius and HyperKitty mailman3-full - Full Mailman3 mailing list management suite (metapackage) python3-django-postorius - Web user interface to access GNU Mailman3 a search for hyperkitty: python3-django-hyperkitty - Web user interface to access GNU Mailman3 archives python3-mailman-hyperkitty - Mailman3 plugin to archive emails with HyperKitty mailman3-web - Django project integrating Mailman3 Postorius and HyperKitty mailman3-full - Full Mailman3 mailing list management suite (metapackage) and that tells me that it really, *really* should be a drop-dead simple process... *if* you're using debian... because someone has already done all the hard work and made sure those all work and work well, out-of-the-box. there's a really good reason why i use debian, even though they screwed users over by forcing systemd onto people.
No doubt with more time I would have resolved these, but those of us who met have been waiting long enough to continue those discussions.
