20 years of t-shirts - a photo op?
Does anyone (other than me!) think it would be a fun idea to gather 20 of us together, each wearing a (F)OSDEM t-shirt from a different year? It doesn't have to be your first shirt. Or the earliest one that fits. Just to see if we can get them all in one chronological line! Happy to co-ordinate off-list, if the thread gets spammy! Hi
I’ll gladly wear the 2000 OSDEM one
But the year _was_ an "off-by-one" error ... s/2000/2001/
I sill remember the t-shirt. I could wear my original SuSE not openSUSE t-shirt. But.. don't want to upset the Debian people :) At about 2000/2001 we were thinking that Fosdem was going to fail. Not enough people. Looks like we were wrong. Nice to see that the conference that I started back in 1994 as OSDEM has survived this long. Even if it's not quite the same thing. I remember RMS claimed all of the credit for my own work with - https://www.ulb.be/. Which I never mentioned to anyone else. Never mind. We had some effect on the world around us. That was important at the time and probably even more important at a time when people like Trump claim that they are political leaders. -- Richard http://www.sheflug.org.uk/indexpage https://twitter.com/Sheflug https://twitter.com/SleepyPenguin1

1994!? I understood there has been only one OSDEM-event, in 2000 or 2001. I read at https://archive.fosdem.org/2002/about/1200.html from sept 2001: "The first event was called OSDEM. The next edition will be called FOSDEM" which seems to support that. Do you have a link to stuff from the late nineties?

For some reason most of it or all of it has vanished. Apart from my own SuSE t-shirts. Which were always controversial due to the fact that some developers didn't like them. Never mind.

The first OSDEM session I went to was in 1995. Early talks were about the HTTP protocol and a stand up row about MySQL. Some others as well. I remember because at that time Eurostar had just been built. All of us from England were a bit knocked out about the new train service to Brussels. Quite an engineering feat. No idea how all of the OSDEM list archive vanished into nowhere. -- Richard

I'm sure that this is a correct legal statement for the purposes of the present day FOSDEM trademark. However. The evidence surrounding the event has been somewhat obfuscated by various events and activities dating back to about 1994/1995. Also. I don't know what kind of stuff Richard is smoking, and that might be related with his 'memory' and 'police encounters', but - obviously Raphael - who organised the first (F)OSDEM knows what he is talking about. I'm sure that if there where noteworthy meetings in Brussels before 2000, that I would have known. Aside from Iguana, linuxroom and Ulyssis in Leuven, Infogroup at the VUB and the Linux guys in Antwerp and Gent university and Louvain-Li-nux there was HIP97 and 'after hip' and 'post after hip' which I organised with Lumumba at the University near Hasselt. If you look for a document from the past; this might be the closest to a full view from back then: https://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Belgian-HOWTO/lugs.html And I remember the time very well; we where very happy to support Fosdem under our name back then: Life/VA Linux. And at the first OSDEM, RMS even helped me personally to install Debian at the time (I was more RPM focused before 2000 ;-) Let me take this opportunity to thank all these people who have invested so much time, sweat and effort into building this incredible event - every year I seem to know less people at the event; and I think that's a good thing, as the community grows and becomes more international and younger ;-) Thanks for building this community and accomplishing such a monumental task, year after year! Definitely was. I was stood there looking at his face in front of me. I didn't imagine that :) I put him there on that stage in the Janson theatre... https://www.out.be/fr/lieux/3353/universite-libre-de-bruxelles-auditoire-p-e...

Yes. So am I. Sadly I can say that most of us who helped to start open source and free software were under pressure from some sort of government department from several countries. Not the Belgian Government who wanted to see an open source vent take place. I might suggest Microsoft ? Could be wrong.

/me diggs into local mailing archives... Are you sure you're not meaning the OTA Linux SIG? I remember those. I was involved with the UKUUG at that time. However. I definitely remember arriving for OSDEM at ULB back in 1995/1996. I also remember a mention of this in an early version of Linux Format which started in 1999. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Format I've had similar problems with the Boston Linux Expo in 2006. Where a lot of people said such a thing didn't exist but I wrote about it for Linux User and Developer magazine (now defunct). I still have a copy of that report. Not the earlier one about OSDEM. As some background to what was going on at the time. I was questioned by two Brussels plain clothes police officers about the goings on around the 1995/96/98 rebuild of the Brussels Metro. There were some strange things going on. Some police officers thought that the case might be linked to ULB in some way. Yes. I know that doesn't make sense :) Then. In 1997 John Prescott became the Deputy Prime Minster in England. He removed the Eurostar tunnel at St Pancras. At the time he said that any reference to him removing the Eurostar tunnel would be buried and any reference to it erased. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Prescott So, some unrelated activities and incidents ? Thing is. I noticed at that time after being questioned by London and Brussels officers that some of this had some effect at ULB and in Brussels. As if something more than evidence about a St Pancras tunnel had been removed. Such as the fact that people weren't remembering what was happening. I don't know what that might be about but one thing seemed to be related to another. I can't be more specific than that. -- Richard

This is such a lie. This is not your memory failing..... Shame on you. Even if it's not quite the same thing. I remember RMS claimed
all of the credit for my own work with - https://www.ulb.be/. Which I never mentioned to anyone else. Never mind. We had some effect on the world around us. That was important at the time and probably even more important at a time when people like Trump claim that they are political leaders.

I'm afraid not. RMS was known for not quite telling the truth. As witnessed by many of my friends when I was organising RMS events around England and other places. My friends are people like members of the IET or Institute of Physics and Royal Society of Chemistry or medical people. In a previous Brussels police interview which took place in the 1990's. I was questioned about the violent punch up between a threatening SuSE developer and a quiet and helpful Debian developer. Which led the police to arresting one or more people on the campus of the ULB at the time. Which also led to a change in the OSDEM proceedings in about 2000/2001. Brussels police told me that was going to happen. It wasn't a secret gathering. In the present day I see no one threatening anyone. So, whatever took place someone did the right thing somewhere :) -- Richard

Let me state once more very clearly: whatever you did all around England was unrelated to the OSDEM event that took place in brussels in 2001. In the present day I see no one threatening anyone. So, whatever took

No. This was in Brussels. Not England. I had to talk to the Brussels police more than once. About several incidents in ULB campus and around Brussels. Which changed the history and organisation of OSDEM/FOSDEM. From the 1990's up to the present day. -- Richard

Happy to co-ordinate off-list, if the thread gets spammy!
Thanks,
Steev
