FOSDEM 2009 beer event
Yes - there will be a beer event again at FOSDEM 2009. It will take place at the Delirium Café in Brussels like last year. I am currently still working out particulars with the Delirium management and working on some improvements to the beer distribution algorithm. Version 3.1 of the BDA will be a typical point-release - no major changes are expected. In Belgium the legislation is so that: - No smoking in restaurants - In Bars it's allowed to smoke. Usually bars have a smoking and non-smoking area.

HAHAHAHAHA! Delusions! Expect to be engulfed by a cloud of poisonous gasses at all times during the FOSDEM beer event. There is no space for a non-smoking area. It's a bar, and we fill it. Completely and utterly. Down to the last square ångström. Having said that: if it's not raining again this year, some oxygen may be found outside the bar in the alley between the Delirium Café and the Floris bar (which we also fill ;-)) across the alley. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list.

If the bar is completely filled by FOSDEM people, we can ask everyone not to smoke inside. There is no law in Belgium forbidding to make an event non-smoking. And since most countries already have laws to disallow smoking in bars (and Belgium will introduce them as well if we ever get a government that can make decisions again) I don't see why we cannot protect the non-smoking people and ask smokers to go outside. I am perfectly happy with asking FOSDEM people not to smoke. I can't however enforce anything (nor do I want to) and I definitely don't have any kind of control over the non-FOSDEM people (the seven or eight of them that will still fit) in the bar. It's easier all round to just accept whatever the bar's default policy on smoking is. No, I don't like it either. I don't smoke tobacco. There are a million things on my FOSDEM TODO list, I don't have time to fight windmills. If someone would like to try to enforce a non-smoking policy at the beer event, I won't stop them. I won't have time to help them either though. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list.

That is probably the best course of action. Asking nicely usually helps in situations like these, especially as we will be one social group. Writing a reminder to the mailing list, onto the beer event page, etc will probably help more than enforcement on site. Richard

Dear Dag, I suppose you intend to write 'more non-smoking that smoking people'. As indicated by all surveys. I agree with you : the smokers, as a minority, should go outside to smoke, and I would expect the FOSDEM organization to take this logical decision. Regards. Bruno
Hi! I'm planning on attending FOSDEM and it might very well be that once I'm on location I have to try out as many of the local bewerages as possible and perhaps a cigarette or two - stepping outside isn't a biggie (actually it's quite possible that the more social small talk will take place around that ash-tray =) ) since that is also the standard here in Finland. I'm looking forward to the beer event. //Matthias-the-one-who-smokes-only-when-he-drinks

The FOSDEM organization is in the business of organizing one of the largest open source conferences in Europe. It may surprise you that that keeps us busy enough not to have "spare time" to own bars or take other steps to rid the world of tobacco smokers. Of course, if you would like to go on a no-smoking crusade at the FOSDEM beer event, no member of the FOSDEM organization is going to stop you. Each his own goals. Hi, i agree with Philip, really it's not important if we can smoke (i'm an attender smoker of fosdem) inside or outside. I could imagine the power needed the organizers for doing and thinking how prepare well this event. I think all smokers don't pay attention where they can smoke, but all pay attention if the conference is really well organized. Sorry for the intrusion but like a rapresenter of a minority i have to say something. Best regards Gianluca

The FOSDEM is a great event. And Philip please be convinced I truly respect the huge and good job done and my intention is certainly not to start any against-something crusade during this event. However, as you mentioned your 'spare time', please note others events put labels 'No smoking' and, it may surprise you, without any impact on the organizers spare time. Regards, Bruno

Would it harm to ask politely on the website (and in future communication) to smoke outside whenever possible ? I never said I wanted a crusade, but do we need laws (or crusades) for common sense to prevail ? I would hope not. If the organisation asks for it, it has more influence than anything outsiders (or participants) are able to achieve during the beer event. And it would only take a minute out of your busy schedule (probably less than reading this thread ;-)). -- -- dag wieers, dag@wieers.com, http://dag.wieers.com/ -- [Any errors in spelling, tact or fact are transmission errors]

+1 To further reduce your effort, I suggest a specific text you could use as a starting point: "N) Smoking: Some people have asked to avoid smoke inside the bar and use the alley in front the bar for smoking (there are only pedestrians in the alley). While it is legally allowed to smoke in a bar in Belgium, I believe trying to limit smoking to the alley outside would be a nice gesture towards the non-smoking visitors." Open for critique and improvement :-) Peter

I'd like to add that when I attended last year beer event, the Delirium was so crowded that I ended up spending the evening in the smoke free street next to it. The street was filled with FOSDEM visitors, so I didn't have to get in. I didn't realize smoking was allowed until the next beer event hehe. So non-smokers should be fine at this event! -- Pierre-Luc Beaudoin
Sorry but can someone there in Brussels check if the Delirium Café has a *real* smoking / non-smoking areas ? Personally I never seen the separation of mixed areas (meaning sharing same physical place) be respected by the smoke of cigarettes (and unfortunately neither by smokers of course). It doesn't. It's a bar. It gets filled with people. It is not possible to contain smoke. Years of second-hand smoke permeates every surface too.
Personally I never seen the separation of mixed areas (meaning sharing same physical place) be respected by the smoke of cigarettes (and unfortunately neither by smokers of course).
Yes. It's like a corner for pissing in a swimming pool. I don't have time for fighting windmills. We're all dying 24 hours a day, inhaling some more second hand poison gas or less won't make the difference. Reality: bars contain smoke. If you don't want smoke, the bar is probably not for you. If you want to try to change reality: by all means, but be prepared to put up with smoke in the reality you're going to try to change. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list. ... except if the bar also just happens to provide food. It's slightly more complex than that :-) Having said that, even in establishments where it's not allowed to smoke inside, you're allowed to smoke outside, in front of the door or some such. This happened to a considerable extent on last year's beer event, too, and I don't see why you couldn't do so again this year.
