News : Android, iPhone, Maemo, WebOS ... developers wanted
Last edition there was a FOSDEM schedule application [1] available for almost every phone platform. Following this success we'd like to do a new call-for-development to ask the same thing again for this edition. -------- EXISTING CODE ------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you use the existing code where possible, and don't hesitate to contact the previous developers to see if they are still interested to help you update the application. Platform Source Previous devs Android source [2] Michaël Uyttersprot, Pieter Iserbyt and Christophe Vandeplas iPhone source [3] Adam Ziolkowski and Leon Handreke Maemo source [4] The company Ixonos Oyj [5], with Alexander Bezprozvanny (Advisor), Alexey Vyskubov (PM), Berendova Monika (Dev), Hanzes Matus (Dev), Komara Martin (Dev), Korinek Pavol (Dev), Pavelka Pavol (Dev), Timko Marek (Dev), Uzak Matus (Dev), Fortes Francisco(Dev) WebOS source [6] Raphael Kallensee -------- DATA SOURCE --------------------------------------------------------- Data sources can be any of these: * http://fosdem.org/schedule/xml [7] * http://fosdem.org/schedule/ical [8] * http://fosdem.org/schedule/xcal [9] Be careful. These still contain the schedule of last year, so don't hardcode the content into your application as even the week before FOSDEM some schedule-changes might occur. Coding the links and adding an "sync" or "update" functionality should be the way to go. Why are new devs needed ? can't the previous apps just use the new data ? Ludo -- http://perso.hirlimann.net/~ludo/blog/ http://flickr.com/photos/lhirlimann

Why are new devs needed ? can't the previous apps just use the new data ? Possibly not. As I recall, the data the app had was out of date on FOSDEM (it certainly caused me to miss a few talks). Presumably updating the data/app on the day was not possible quite so easily, which would suggest that there's dev work needed for next FOSDEM.

Make sure you use the existing code where possible,
I've now taken the code from the fosdem-maemo project [0] and created fosdem-schedule packages from the current version in svn [1] for maemo5 (fremantle-1.3; armel) and Debian (sid; armel, amd64, and i386). Changes: -------- I haven't touched the code. On the packaging side, - for maemo5 I've made only the necessary changes so that the package actually builds and runs [2] - for Debian I've rewritten the debian/ directory from scratch in order to get a proper Debian package :) (and applied two tiny patches to get the files in the right places where they differ from maemo) Installation: ------------- The (source and binary) packages are availabe in my private repo. Either add the location to your sources.list: maemo5: deb http://www.toastfreeware.priv.at/debian fremantle free Debian: deb http://www.toastfreeware.priv.at/debian unstable main and run apt(-get|itude) update; apt(-get|itude) install fosdem-schedule or grab and install the packages manually: maemo5: http://www.toastfreeware.priv.at/debian/pool/free/f/fosdem-schedule/ Debian: http://www.toastfreeware.priv.at/debian/pool/main/f/fosdem-schedule/ Info about the repo signing key is available at http://www.toastfreeware.priv.at/debian/ First start/configuration: -------------------------- On Debian you might have to rm ~/.fosdem if you had a previous version installed. (On maemo5 this happens in the postinst.) Don't be shocked: when you start fosdem-schedule you will see the schedule of last year's fosdem (the sql version is still included). Go to Menu > Conferences, add a new conference and enter http://fosdem.org/schedule/xml (You can delete or leave the "FOSDEM 2010" conference there.) Make sure to select "FOSDEM 2011" before leaving the dialog; in the main window you might have to switch tabs once to get the dates on the left updated. PS: For the N900 there's also sojourner; cf. the author's announcement at http://blogs.gnome.org/wjjt/2011/01/26/sojourner-another-fosdem-schedule-app... Ehm, together with a first test user (thanks, Axel!) I found a small problem (some missing persons) that can be worked around by changing the order: - remove ~/.fosdem/fosdem.sqlite, if present - go to Menu > Conferences and 1) remove "FOSDEM 2010" 2) only then add/import the FOSDEM 2011 schedule Sorry for the noise and the inconvenience. Excellent! We've added a link to this post on our homepage, listing the mobile applications we know about: http://fosdem.org/2011/schedule_is_mobile Let us know if we're missing an application! Kind regards, Tias

Since I got asked in private mail, I guess I should add the missing piece of information: the libqt4-experimental-* libs are in extras-devel, so you need something like deb http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel fremantle free in your sources.list (although I guess most people have extras-devel activated already). And if it still doesn't work and argues about conflicts, deinstalling the game sheep and the 4x4inclinometer helped (solution found by aptitude :-), because they depended on some libqt4-maemo5-* libs against which the libqt4-experimental-* conflict.
