Hey all, we have a 3m high giant inflatable tux penguin, that might be an interesting landmark to let people know where fosdem is and what it's about. Is it a good idea to put it somewhere? It does need a power supply so it can remain inflated (it inflates itself in about 5 minutes). I can bring an extension cable of 30m or so if needed and I can put it in order working saterday morning and sunday morning. I think it consumes about 50watt. All.
We just got an unpleasant (and confused) phone call from ULB about an attempted delivery of "stuff" (we don't know what it is or who sent it) for FOSDEM. We'd like to keep our hosts happy. Shipping stuff to them doesn't further that goal.
Can I stress again that it is _not_ possible to ship _anything_ to the FOSDEM venue? We cannot take delivery of it, the university can't take delivery of it for us and it can't be stored anywhere.
Items shipped anyway are likely to be blackholed.
Please Don't Do That[tm].
This has been a service announcement.

PS: If you happen to know who may have tried to ship something, please get in touch with me off-list - own up! I don't bite. ;)

Hey Jasper, Sounds great! We would love to put it somewhere. I had the patch of grass between the H and AW building in mind, or perhaps on the terrain where the fries stands are, but we have to be careful not to block any passages there. We can happily provide power and ask security to keep an extra eye on it, as well as stock it overnight in our storage room between sat/sun. However, I hope you understand that we can not take liability for it, and that we can not ship it to/from FOSDEM. Is that OK? Kind regards, Tias
Hi Tias, ok, I understand the liability issues and such, but as long as we have the reassuring message that it will be dealt with responsably, it will be great. The patch of grass is probably the best sitting spot for the penguin; next to the giant beers and fishes for lunch ;-D I'll bring it saturday morning; my Belgian phone number: 0478978967 Greetings, Jasper -- Jasper Nuyens Managing Director, Linux Belgium http://www.linuxbe.com Phone: +32 (0)2 747 47 01 Fax: +32 (0)2 747 47 10 GSM: +32 (0)478 978967 On Sun, Jan 30, 2011 at 2:27 PM, Mattias 'Tias' Guns <mguns@fosdem.org> wrote:

Please put it somewhere reachable, so that people (like me) could go and have a picture taken while standing next to the Giant Penguin. .... And if possible, arrange some BSD chicks in latex for the same picture making purpose ;) -- @MartinPaljak.net +3725156495

It hasn't rained for a couple of days (surprisingly) but that statement may no longer be true come next weekend. :)

I'm told there are people who find that kind of thing offensive. Be that as it may, the temperature in Belgium in February doesn't really lend itself to such optimistic dress. We'd prefer not to have to deal with a freak outbreak of pneumonia. :) The BSD people usually bring a large beastie with them. It lives at their booth on the lower H level. It's warmer there. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip@fosdem.org subscribed to the list. A closed mouth gathers no foot.
Hi, We all know that the BSD hell is very warm for their inflatables, but I'm sure our penguin can cope with the Belgian cold weather conditions. It's washable, yet if it's raining it will not be ideal for the internal inflation engine/electric power. Electrocuting people isn't probably the best way for luring new souls to Linux :-D As it's 3m high, it's more than 2m wide, so the narrow hallways inside the FOSDEM area are probably better left for non-inflatable puny earthlings. Man Up! also I find it shamefull that anyone would find this offensive. Im sure if you ask the aber lot nicly they can provide a few people prepared to "brave" the cold weather *cough*Warm*cough*climate*cough* the aber lot are bringing several strange creatures called women, maybe not in latex but enough to get geeks hearts pumping... failing that kidnap them from the hall ways and tie them to Tux? :P

At least in my experience, the grass is _always_ wet & muddy. No idea how easy it is to clean your penguin afterwards, but this might be worth keeping in mind. If I were you, I would try to find a spot which's floor is concrete, stone or similar and which can be seen by people who are not already visiting FOSDEM anyway. Ideally, it would lure new people in :) Richard
