Your Fosdem 2015 submission
by Andreas Thienemann 10 Jan '15

10 Jan '15

Hello Lennart, First of all, apologies for the delay in getting you this status update about your talk submission. We had a lot of submissions to review and unfortunately real-life intruded more than expected. You have submitted a talk proposal {Title} for the Distribution Devroom at Fosdem 2015. Thank you very much for your contribution and for helping make Fosdem an interesting conference. I'm very happy to inform you, that your talk has been accepted. We are currently finalizing the schedule for the devroom. If you requested a certain day for your talk, we should be able to accommodate your preference. Once we have your talk scheduled we'll be sending you another mail with the necessary details. Due to the large amount of excellent submissions we would like to limit the general talk duration to 45 minutes including audience questions if wanted. If your talk is planned to be 45min or shorter, you're good. If your talk is scheduled to be longer than 45min we'd like to ask you to see if you can shorten the talk to 45min. If this is not possible, please do get in touch with us and we'll figure something out. Should you have any questions or comments you can contact the devroom organizers at distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org. Nethserver proposal for distribution devroom
by Alessio Fattorini 18 Dec '14

Hi guys, as Tias suggested me, I'm asking if you have yet a single slot for my talk, already submitted on lightning talks. I past below Tias's email and a briefly description. Have I to switch my submission on distribution devroom? I'm waiting for you answer :-) Alessio On 07/12/2014 15:35, Tias Guns wrote: > Hey Alessio, > > You might want to consider contacting the distributions devroom, that > could be a good fit and they might have room for more than a 15m slot > for you. > https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2014-October/002047.html > > (don't hesitate to contact them even if their deadline is already > officialy over). > > > Kind regards, > Tias ## http://www.nethserver.org Submission notes: I hope other people and communities will join NethServer Project because joining our community is a great way to interact with other users, ask questions to sysadmin and developer professionals, increase awareness of the work that you are doing, improve your skills, or give back. The aim is to have widespread, innovative, robust and well tested product Abstract: What’s NethServer? An operating system designed for small offices and medium enterprises, based on CentOS/RHEL, the widespread and popular server distribution, with some extra packages, particularly a powerful and extensible web interface that simplifies common administration tasks. NethServer is focusing on maintainability, extensibility and standard compliance with CentOS. It’s designed for the sysadmin who appreciates the effectiveness of a user interface which saves time compared to configuration file modification and for users who want to approach CentOS without having Linux skills. Full Description: Administering a Linux OS like CentOS requires you to break down an high knowledge barrier to obtain a comprehensive solution. Consider this example: a system administrator needs to create a CentOS-based mail server on a VM or cloud instance. The administrator installs CentOS, along with: Postfix, Cyrus IMAP (or Dovecot), SpamAssassin, ClamAV (from EPEL), OpenSSL for user certificates. He pulls it all together with OpenLDAP for user and group management. Now all that needs to be done is configuring all those open source packages into a cohesive mail solution. When that's done, he breakouts the OpenSSL documentation to figure out all the security certificate jargon. NethServer does all this stuff with some clicks and minimal configuration. What’s NethServer? An operating system designed for small offices and medium enterprises, based on CentOS/RHEL, the widespread and popular server distribution, with some extra packages, particularly a powerful and extensible web interface that simplifies common administration tasks. NethServer is focusing on maintainability, extensibility and standard compliance with CentOS. It’s designed for the sysadmin who appreciates the effectiveness of a user interface which saves time compared to configuration file modification and for users who want to approach CentOS without having Linux skills. NethServer architecture explicitly supports developers by making it easy to install and integrate additional software. We quickly added some pre-configured modules, installable with a “single click”, for example: LAMP framework, Caching + filtering web proxy with SSL filter (Squid), Groupware (SOGo), Bandwidth Monitor (ntopng), Mail Server with Antispam and Antivirus (Postifx + Spamassassin + Clamav + Amavis), VPN (OpenVPN and IPsec/L2TP), Firewall (Shorewall), Intrusion detection (Snort), ownCloud. NethServer is an open source project, all the sources are under the GPL, all the documentation is under CC and everyone can access the bug tracker and join the project. So far it has been designed and supported almost entirely by a company called Nethesis (an Italian IT company of Linux enthusiasts, committed to FOSS since 2003) but now we hope other people and communities will join (see our community channels to get in touch with us and contribute http://www.nethserver.org/community/) The aim is to have a widespread, innovative, robust and well tested product. -- Alessio Fattorini - @ale_fattorini Nethesis srl - Pesaro (Italy)

Heads up, FOSDEM'15 distributions-devroom stuff and CfP coming up
by Andreas Thienemann 22 Oct '14

22 Oct '14

Hi there, I am one of the people responsible for running the distributions-devroom at FOSDEM'15 next year. Joe, who did an excellent job last year, is running the cloud devroom this year and therefore asked me to step up. In order to make sure that it's not just a single person taking care of things and possibly missing things, I asked a few friends who I knew would be at FOSDEM if they'd be willing to help out. The full team is thus as follows: Andreas Thienemann, Christoph Wickert, Jim Perrin, Rikki Endsley and Robyn Bergeron I am using this mailinglist as a contact address for any questions or problems in the CfP. This might result in some questions from speakers willing to contribute to this list. Please do keep this in mind. Should you chose to answer a question, please be courteous and if in doubt wait for an "official answer". Thank you. If you should have any issues with the mailinglist, feel free to ask me for help, I've been entered as the mailman admin for the list and can most likely help you out. As promised in the subject, the CfP is going to be sent out in a few minutes but a sneak preview is visible at <https://github.com/ixs/distributions-devroom/blob/master/README.md>. Should you see any glaring mistakes I made, now would be a good time to mention that to me. As I said, the CfP will go out in a few minutes. :-) Please do feel free to send the CfP around to your friends who you believe might be able to contribute interesting topics to the devroom. If you have any ideas or suggestion how to improve on next year's distributions-devroom, please do speak up. Otherwise I'm looking forward to welcoming you all on the 31st of January and the 1st of February 2015 in H.1302 again. cheers, andreas

FOSDEM'15 Distributions Devroom Call for Participation
by Andreas Thienemann 22 Oct '14

22 Oct '14

FOSDEM 2015 - Distribution Devroom Call for Participation ++ Please do feel free to forward this CfP to anyone who you do think might be able to contribute to the distributions devroom ++ FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Software Developers' European Meeting) is a free two-day conference at the Université Libre the Bruxelles, in Brussels, Belgium. FOSDEM in 2015 will be held on 31 Jan & 1 Feb 2015, and the distribution devroom will be held once again this year, on both Saturday and Sunday in room H.1302 (Depage). The role of Linux distributions is changing. We are seeing more standardization between distributions due to the adoption of central tools such as systemd. Device- and task-specific distributions like Raspbmc are finding traction in people's houses to run everyday things. Embedded systems are becoming standardized enough that formerly PC-centric distributions like Fedora are able to be installed on ARM machines through their regular installer. Cloud specific distributions, for instance CoreOS, are opening new venues for distributions to offer the building blocks for massive Linux deployments on virtualized infrastructure. On the other hand, there are voices claiming that distributions are not providing for all the needs people have. Packaging is said to be hard. The belief is that there are too many hurdles to jump over which results in software lagging behind or not offering the best upstream user experience. Some users are voicing concerns that their use-cases are not considered. The purpose of the distributions devroom is to offer a forum for all people interested in distribution issues to meet and collaborate on improving the distribution ecosystem. What are the upcoming challenges facing the distribution space? How can distribution maintainers collaborate better to solve cross-distribution issues? What are interesting developments helping distribution developers to excel in the distribution space? For this purpose we invite submissions of talks, panel sessions, round-table discussions, Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions or lighting talks related to distribution specific issues. Talks should be between 30 to 55 min in length including time for any questions the audience might have. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require a longer or a shorter slot. To submit your talk to FOSDEM 2015 please visit the following URL: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM15 If you already have a Pentabarf account, please *do not* recreate a new one. If you previously spoke at FOSDEM, chances are you already have an account. If you forgot your password, do just reset it. If not, follow the instructions to create an account. If you encounter any problems with the Pentabarf submission system, please do contact us via mail to distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org and we will help you. After your Pentabarf account has been created, please click on the "create event" item in the menu to load the submission form. Then click on the "Show All" tab in the top right corner of the browser window. (All the way to the right on a large screen!) Please do submit the following information: * A title and subtitle of your talk. (Please be as descriptive as possible as the schedule will only show the talk's title in the main overview.) * Select "Distributions devroom" as the track. (Important: We cannot see any other tracks, so talks submitted for the wrong track will possibly be lost) * A short abstract of one paragraph. * A longer description explaining the topic, mentioning who the talk is directed at and how audience members will benefit by attending, e.g. what they will learn. * Any Links to related websites/blogs etc. Submissions should be received before Sunday, 7 December 2014 at 23:59:59 UTC. Acceptance mails will be sent out on the 15th of December 2014. Should you have any questions or comments you can contact the devroom organizers at distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org. Distributions Developer Devroom: Call for Participation
by Joe Brockmeier 02 Dec '13

02 Dec '13

Once again, FOSDEM will have a cross-distribution miniconference on 1 & 2 February 2014. We'd like to invite submissions of talks, Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions, or round-table discussions from any interested representatives of Linux distributions or individuals who have a topic of interest related to Linux distributions. Proposals should be submitted through the FOSDEM proposal system (Pentabarf) here: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM14 You'll add your session title, speaker bio, and abstract for the talk. If you've presented or submitted at FOSDEM previously, you should have an account in Pentabarf. If you haven't created an account, but have presented at FOSDEM previously *please* contact me before creating an account - the odds are you have an account that was created previously by the FOSDEM organizers. Deadline for submissions is 22 December 2013. Since we're on a tight timeline, this is unlikely to be extended. In addition to speakers, we also need one moderator for each day, and a video volunteer for each day. The moderator will introduce the speaker, keep time, and pass the microphone around for questions. The video volunteer will handle recording of sessions with provided equipment. (Don't worry, we'll also provide training as well.) The call for participation is going out a bit late, so please do speak up quickly if you're interested in participating! Also, please do help spread the word so we can ensure the best possible program for this year's FOSDEM. Best, jzb
