Hi all, I am pleased to inform you that we received a first proposal for the Devroom. I am coying for your info the details below (also available on the page: https://www.fasten-project.eu/view/wiki/WP7/FOSDEM-Devroom). We should also talk about a proposal to be submitted by FASTEN team. Who will submit? title and abstract? etc. Thanks, Catherine -------------------- *Speaker Name*: Carole Smith (carols@microsoft.com - http://fossygirl.com) and Duane O'Brien (http://duaneobrien.com) *Title*: There's no sustainability problem in FOSS *Subtitle*: Except that there is. *Abstract*: The community seems to be rife with conversations about our sustainability problems. Do we actually have one? We’ll lead a discussion and debate around how we as a community can think about these issues, while drawing out the nuanced aspects of each as well as their potential solutions. *Full description*: When something like left-pad or event-stream happens, how much responsibility should be taken on by companies who deployed a dependency that was critical enough to their operations that removing it created immediate crisis, but not well supported or understood enough that there was any kind of mitigation strategy or backup plan? And yet, when you look at OpenSSL, curl, and other pieces of open source infrastructure that live in our dependency chains, there are many examples of projects that are important enough to be critical, but are under-resourced to the point that maintainers are having to make quality-of-life tradeoffs to stay on top of the project. We are responsible for ensuring that our shared dependencies are sustainably developed. But who is holding us accountable? If a maintainer is driving themselves to burnout because they are supporting too many of their open source projects, don’t they bear some responsibility for that choice? But how are we supposed to untangle which of the thousands of dependencies that we use are in most need of support - and what kind of support they prefer? Is there a sustainability problem in FOSS after all?
Hi Georgios, all, We still have only two proposals for the Devroom. We are continuously promoting it on twitter and will share it on the upcoming OW2 december newsletter but this is not enough. Any way we can re-activate the contacts and individual invitations? As a reminder the deadline is december 4 so coming quite soon. I will see if we can offer a deadline extension for a few days. Another question is what will we (the FASTEN team) present? any suggestion? Thanks for your replies, Kind regards, Catherine Le 05/11/2019 à 11:02, Georgios Gousios - EWI a écrit :

Dear all, Please see below the status of the Devroom preparation: We have now 5 proposals, details are on this page: https://www.fasten-project.eu/view/wiki/WP7/FOSDEM-Devroom (only short versions of the abstracts are published there, if you would like to see the entire abstracts just let me know and I can add it on the page or send it by email). Now we need to decide if we look for more proposals and select afterwards the prefered ones. The deadline to submit is this week wed. Dec. 4 but I guess this is possible to extend it for a few days if we wish too. The final deadline is that we have to provide the Devroom program by *December 15*. Please give your feedback on the current proposals list, does this seem fine to you or should we extend the deadline? Regarding the timing of the session: Three out of the four proposals have requested a duration of 45 minutes and the two others 30 minutes, that make all in all a total duration of 3h15 hours. The total timing of the Devroom has to be scheduled between 15:00 and 19:00 (4 hours maximum). So that leaves 45 minutes for our talk. Please note that this talk also needs to be submitted online, otherwise it will not be published in the program, Georgios will you do it? Thanks, Catherine
The proposals looks interesting (maybe a bit less sure for Pulp and sustainability but it's still in the same general domain). 45 minutes left might be a bit low but depends what we have in store to present. On Mon, Dec 2, 2019 at 11:26 AM Catherine Nuel <catherine.nuel@ow2.org> wrote:

Hello all, The final list is here: https://www.fasten-project.eu/view/wiki/WP7/FOSDEM-Devroom We have 11 proposals. It won't be unfortunately possible to integrate all talks, so we'll have to select and maybe modify the duration requested by speakers. In order to move forward, please classify the 11 talks in order of preference. Please have in mind that we have 4 hours in total, so that could make for example 8 talks * 30 minutes, or 4 talks * 45 minutes + 2 talks * 30 minutes. Please provide your feedback by *mid of next week* latest so we can target to have the agenda on December 15 as requested by FOSDEM team.

Actually we can organize the program the way we want, there is no constraints from FOSDEM team on the timings and lenghts of presentations. So if we prefer to shorten some talks, this is possible.
Now we have 9 submissions, so that makes a change. I will collect all proposals and copy it on the wiki page asap.
@all: What do you think of organizing a quick call end of next week to finalize that? (for me it would be possible on friday dec. 13 or monday dec. 16, which would be the last possible day to finalize the program I guess). Georgios, would you have some availabilities one of those days?
Can we send a doodle to all team? If not possible, we'll have to manage by email.

I would reject 5 and 7 too as not accurate enough compared to the others. Not sure about 11 and 8, do we want both by definition or are they conflicting (my preference would go to 11 as more generic in that case) ? Then my more or less ordered preference list would be something like 2, 9, 3 (provided that there is interesting people in that panel as Georgios mentioned), 4, 6, 10, 1. I completely agree with the idea of having only 30 minute slots, as it will make programming (for you and the audience) so much easier. If there is no possibility for the panel, I’d propose you add a couple of more talks (from your backup), rather than extend the time slot of presentations. - 9 (45') : Precise, cross-project code navigation at GitHub scale
- 10 (25') : Spack's new Concretizer
- 11 (30') : FASTEN: Scaling static analyses to ecosystems
_Proposals to discuss_:
- 3 (45'): Package managers: resolve differences
=> depends on the ability of submitter to provide a list of speakers. I've contacted them, we can wait until monday for possible feedback.
_Proposal to integrate only if we have time_:
- 6 (15'), 8 (30')

TENTATIVE PROGRAM
My proposal would be to integrate the 6 proposals from first category and change the schedule to 30' for all talks (would make it more consistent and easier to manage).

Thanks, Catherine

The proposals looks interesting (maybe a bit less sure for Pulp and
sustainability but it's still in the same general domain).
45 minutes left might be a bit low but depends what we have in store to present.

Dear all,
Please see below the status of the Devroom preparation:
We have now 5 proposals, details are on this page:
https://www.fasten-project.eu/view/wiki/WP7/FOSDEM-Devroom
(only short versions of the abstracts are published there, if you would like to see the entire abstracts just let me know and I can add it on the page or send it by email).
Now we need to decide if we look for more proposals and select afterwards the prefered ones. The deadline to submit is this week wed. Dec. 4 but I guess this is possible to extend it for a few days if we wish too.
The final deadline is that we have to provide the Devroom program by December 15.
Please give your feedback on the current proposals list, does this seem fine to you or should we extend the deadline?
Regarding the timing of the session:
Three out of the four proposals have requested a duration of 45 minutes and the two others 30 minutes, that make all in all a total duration of 3h15 hours.
