FOSDEM 2025 Devroom
by Udo Steinberg 29 Sep '24

29 Sep '24

Hi all, keeping up with the community tradition to rotate the organization of the devroom among the various microkernel and component-based OS groups, I have gone ahead and submitted a proposal to FOSDEM for the 2025 devroom. This means, the next devroom (if approved) will be organized by folks from BlueRock Security (formerly BedRock) and will be co-chaired by myself and Alexander van der Grinten. We encourage all teams who are actively developing open-source projects in our community to consider submitting a talk about your latest and greatest ideas or project updates and to discuss them with other developers. Around end of October we will send out the official call for participation. Cheers, Udo

Last-minute schedule change
by Martin Decky 02 Feb '24

02 Feb '24

Dear speakers, since Szymon Duchniewicz had to withdraw his talk at 16:30, it is now possible to create some "breathing space" by adding 5-minute breaks in between the first few talks of the devroom (unfortunately, there is not enough extra time to do this for all talks, but that's just life). Therefore I would like to propose the following last-minute schedule change. Please let me know ASAP if you have any issues with this. If this is OK for you, then you don't need to reply. If there are no protests by the end of Friday, I'll update the official schedule. Begin | End | Speaker | Title ------+-------+---------------------+-------------------------------------- [ first talk unchanged ] 15:25 | 15:45 | C. Mainas, A. Nanos | Bunny: A Modular Approach ... 15:50 | 16:10 | Andreia Ocanoaia | Run Node.js in a unikernel ... 16:15 | 16:45 | Udo Steinberg | Using the NOVA microhypervisor ... 16:50 | 17:10 | Razvan Deaconescu | Unikernels Are Here: ... 17:15 | 17:35 | Matias Vara Larsen | Is Toro unikernel faster for MPI? [ remaining talks unchanged ] Thanks for your attention! Best regards Martin Decky

Action needed: Slides for your talk at the Microkernel devroom 2024 (deadline: Friday February 2nd)
by Martin Decky 25 Jan '24

25 Jan '24

Dear speakers, I hope that by now, you have already done all your travel and other arrangements and nothing prevents you from having your talk at the Microkernel and Component-based OS devroom at FOSDEM 2024. In case there is a significant change on your side, please let me know about it ASAP. Like already announced previously [1], I would like to collect all the slide decks for all the talks in the devroom beforehand in order to minimize the overhead of setting up each talk. The devroom is completely packed from start to finish and there are no breaks between the talks. To reiterate: Please send me the slides of your talk no later than on Friday February 2nd (End of Day, local Brussels time). Please export your slides to PDF to minimize compatibility issues. If your presentation requires some additional files (e.g. videos), please send them as well. If the file size poses a problem for sending a file as an email attachment, feel free to use any file transfer service of your preference. If you can send your slides sooner than on February 2nd, please do so! This will only make the life less stressful both for you and for me. If you absolutely cannot have your talk without presenting from your own laptop, please let me know about that immediately. (And also understand that your laptop setup and de-setup time will cut into your own talk time.) Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation! Looking forward to your slides and eventually to seeing you at FOSDEM! [1] https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/microkernel-devroom/2023-December/000194… Best regards Martin Decky

FOSDEM 2024 Microkernel and Component-based OS devroom schedule proposal
by Martin Decky 14 Dec '23

14 Dec '23

Dear all, please see below the current proposal of the schedule of the Microkernel and Component-based OS devroom at FOSDEM 2024. (This email also serves as an official confirmation of the acceptance of your talk, in case you have missed the email from pretalx.) As you can probably see immediately, the duration of the talks had to be reduced in almost all cases in order to accommodate all the accepted talks (only a single proposal has been rejected, since it was not a good match for the topics of the devroom). Sadly, the total duration of the devroom this year, as allocated by the FOSDEM organizers, is one half compared to the previous years. I fully understand that shortening the talk duration is very unfortunate and delivering a quality talk in 20 minutes is challenging. If this constraint is prohibitive for you and you would rather withdraw your talk under these circumstances, then please let me know ASAP. However, I still believe that something is better than nothing and I strongly encourage you to accept the challenge. Begin | End | Speaker | Title ------+-------+---------------------+-------------------------------------- 15:00 | 15:20 | Alex Auvolat | A microkernel-based ... 15:20 | 15:40 | Johannes Schlatow | Streamlining application ... 15:40 | 16:00 | Andreia Ocanoaia | Run Node.js in a unikernel ... 16:00 | 16:30 | Udo Steinberg | Using the NOVA microhypervisor ... 16:30 | 17:00 | Szymon Duchniewicz | Improving the Space Efficiency ... 17:00 | 17:20 | Razvan Deaconescu | Unikernels Are Here: ... 17:20 | 17:40 | Matias Vara Larsen | Is Toro unikernel faster for MPI? 17:40 | 18:00 | Martin Kröning | News from the Hermit Crab ... 18:00 | 18:20 | Simon Kuenzer | Linux Binary Compatible ... 18:20 | 18:40 | Waldemar Kozaczuk | Support Dynamically Linked ... 18:40 | 19:00 | C. Mainas, A. Nanos | Bunny: A Modular Approach ... If you see any issue or a scheduling conflict on your side in this schedule proposal, then please do not hesitate to approach me ASAP. The later we do any adjustments in the schedule, the harder it might be (but we will try to do our best). I am certainly also open to any other comments and suggestions. FYI: The devroom has been scheduled to the room UD2.208 (Decroly) with a capacity of 174. A few other remarks: (1) Please click on the link you have received in the email from pretalx to confirm your talk. Without that, your talk will not appear in the public schedule on the FOSDEM web site. If you have not received the email from pretalx, then please let me know about your confirmation by any other means. (2) Given the short talk slots and no slack time for the changeovers, I would like to request all the speakers to send me their presentations in advance in a PDF (possibly including prerecorded videos with demos, etc.). We will run the slide decks from a single laptop to minimize the complications with connecting to the beamer, to the streaming box, etc. (3) The deadline for the presentation materials is February 2nd 2024 by the very latest. In your own interest, try to send me your materials sooner than that, so that we can iron out any possible issues with time to spare. (4) In case you absolutely need to present from your own laptop (e.g. because of a live demo, etc.), it will be certainly possible. But please note that the setup time will cut into your own talk slot and please be prepared to give your talk only using the previously collected materials from the common laptop in case something goes wrong with setting up your own laptop. Once again, a prerecorded demo might be a reasonable compromise given the constraints. (5) It is perfectly fine to not have a Q&A time in your talk and answer the questions from the audience in a hallway discussion. Again, this is certainly not ideal, but we have to deal with what we have. (6) We will start organizing the traditional microkernel dinner in January. If you have any suggestions or preferences, feel free to talk to me. Happy holidays and looking forward to meeting you at FOSDEM in February! CfP: Microkernel and Component-based OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2024
by Martin Decky 15 Nov '23

15 Nov '23

Microkernel and Component-based OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2024 CALL FOR PARTICIPATION On-line version of this CfP: http://fosdem.microkernel.info/ The developers and users of several free and open source microkernel-based, unikernel-based and component-based operating systems will meet as part of FOSDEM 2024 [1] and will share a developer room. The devroom is currently looking for content in the form of talks and other activities related to microkernel-based, unikernel-based, component-based operating systems and similar areas. Possible topics of the devroom include, but are not limited to: * introduction of a specific OS or framework * design of subsystems and the general architecture of an OS * languages, tools and toolchains used * enabling support for hardware (architectures, device drivers) and programming languages * development processes, debugging * maintenance, testing and release engineering * safety, security and robustness * trends and challenges * research and open questions * community and governance * use cases, experiences and status updates * best practices and lessons learned * demos The devroom has been scheduled to Saturday February 3rd 2024 in the afternoon (Central European Time). This is a call for your participation. We kindly ask you to submit your proposals no later than on December 10th 2023 (End of Day, Anywhere on Earth). Please use the pretalx [2] web site to submit your proposals. Note that this is a new submission system and the user accounts from the previous submission system (pentabarf) have not been transferred. Make sure to select the Microkernel and Component-based OS as the track when submitting your proposal and include at least the following information: * title of your proposal * short abstract (one or two paragraphs) * duration (at least 15 minutes and no longer than 40 minutes) * your full name * your short bio You can specify your preferred time slot of your proposal and any other relevant information. The communication language of the devroom is English. Please note that the devroom has been allocated only a half of a day this year. Therefore the final decision on the duration of the talks will be made by the devroom organizers based on the number of accepted proposals. The official devroom schedule (along with the accepted talks) will be announced on December 15th 2023 on the devroom's mailing list [3] and the speakers will be notified via e-mail. The schedule will be published on the FOSDEM web site, too. About the Devroom Since the first Microkernel OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2012 [4], this devroom has been a part of each following FOSDEM (with slight variations of the name). The focus gradually widened to include component-based, unikernel-based and other operating systems. By now, it has become a somewhat institutionalized tradition for the open source operating systems community, a kind of "extended family meeting" and it is one of the places where microkernel and unikernel enthusiasts meet regularly. To this date, over two dozen projects have participated in one way or another. Many of the projects face similar challenges but come up with partially different solutions. Therefore, the goal of the devroom is to bring the various projects together, let them exchange ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. As every previous year, the devroom will offer the "stage" both to established community members and to newcomers. We like to select the talks in an inclusive manner, while staying true to the main technical topics (system-level software, broadly speaking) and creating a balanced and unbiased schedule. We would like to keep the quality bar of the devroom same as in the previous years. Presenting at FOSDEM implies that the recordings of the talks will be published under Creative Commons license by FOSDEM. By submitting a proposal, the speaker agrees to have the talk made available publicly indefinitely. For organizational purposes, we also need contact information of the speakers of accepted talks. Microkernel Dinner It has also become a habit that the devroom participants dine together somewhere in Brussels. The year 2024 will not be any different, so there is going to be a dinner on Saturday night. We will inform you about the exact arrangements later. About FOSDEM FOSDEM [5] is a two-day conference organized by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. FOSDEM is widely recognized as one of the largest and best such events worldwide. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open source software and hardware projects and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and proposals. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. In recent years, FOSDEM has been hosting more than 8000 developers annually at the ULB Solbosch Campus in Brussels, Belgium. The participation in FOSDEM is totally free, although the organizers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. No registration is necessary. Attendees are expected to follow the [6]FOSDEM's code of conduct. Important Dates Recap * 2023-12-10: Deadline for proposal submission * 2023-12-15: Schedule published and speakers notified of acceptance * 2024-02-03: Devroom taking place Contact For any comments, questions and suggestions, please do not hesitate to use the devroom's mailing list [3] to contact the devroom organizers. FOSDEM 2024 devroom
by Martin Decky 15 Oct '23

15 Oct '23

Dear all, since the deadline for the devroom proposals for FOSDEM 2024 is approaching very quickly (October 16th) [1], I would like to ask if there is anyone who would want to propose and organize our traditional microkernel (+ friends) devroom. If you have (had) any such plans, please let me know by the end of October 14th (this Saturday!) by latest. In case there is no volunteer, then I will personally propose and organize the devroom. FYI: Razvan Deaconescu, who organized the devroom this year, already volunteered. I would certainly like to thank him for his organization this year and for his initiative. But I believe we should also keep our tradition of the "rotating presidency" of the devroom. Therefore I strongly encourage other members of our operating systems community to step up in order to support the diversity of the devroom. [FOSDEM'23] Submit talk for the "Microkernel and Component-based OS" devroom
by Sebastian Sumpf 05 Dec '22

05 Dec '22

[Sebastian: This message got auo discarded, sorry for the inconvenience. ] Hi. I am Razvan Deaconescu, I'm from University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest (working on Unikraft unikernel) and I'm managing the "Microkernel and Component-based OS" devroom[2] at FOSDEM'2023[1]. The devroom will take place in person, at FOSDEM'23, in Brussels, on Sunday, February 5, 2023. If you have an interesting topic to talk about it would be great if you made a submission. This is something easy to do, takes about 15-20 minutes on Pentabarf[3]. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, Friday, December 7, 2022. FOSDEM 2023 devrooms CfP (deadline October 18th)
by Martin Decky 04 Oct '22

04 Oct '22

Dear microkernel and OS enthusiasts, the FOSDEM organizers have recently announced the CfP for devrooms at FOSDEM 2023 [1]. I strongly encourage a volunteer to step forward and propose the microkernel devroom for FOSDEM 2023, to continue the more-than-a-decade long tradition of our community. It would be a pity to have FOSDEM 2023 without the microkernel devroom, especially since the conference is aiming for a physical event again. Not even mentioning the fact that microkernels are still becoming stronger. Sadly, I again cannot become the primary organizer for this year due to practical personal reasons. Maybe next year. But like last year, I can at least offer to act as a backup and a source of know-how. I am looking forward to your initiative! Thanks. FOSDEM talk recordings reminder
by Martin Decky 19 Jan '22

19 Jan '22

Dear speakers, this is a kind reminder that the hard deadline for submitting your talk recordings to the Microkernel and Component-based OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2022 is approaching quickly. The hard deadline is this Friday January 21st 2022. Please note that it might be seriously complicated, maybe even impossible, to submit your recording after the deadline (and there is little we can do about this on the devroom level, this is set by the FOSDEM organizers). Please also note that there will be no possibility to just present your talk live. If you are really in some kind of trouble, try to upload at least a rough draft recording to Pentabarf before the deadline. That might hopefully allow you to reupload a better second version later. But please understand that the video processing queue might not finish processing your reupload in time (this is precisely the reason why the deadline is set so early). There is really no guarantee that this "hack" will work and we only suggest this as a last resort solution. For those who have already submitted their video: Thank you! We are reviewing and approving the videos regularly. Best regards Martin Decky
