FOSDEM 2022 talk recordings
by Martin Decky 04 Jan '22

04 Jan '22

Dear speakers, the Microkernel and Component-based OS devroom schedule, as announced by Sebastian on Sunday [1], is now public [2]. We kindly ask you to check all the details that concern you and let us know about any discrepancies or issues. Also, if there is any major change on your side (e.g. a need to cancel your talk), please approach us as soon as possible to give us sufficient time to respond to the change. Thanks in advance! The next step for the speakers is to prepare and submit the talk recordings. Here are the guidelines: (1) The deadline for submitting the talk recordings is **Saturday January 15th**. This is a soft deadline, but we strongly encourage you to at least make your first recording and submission attempt by that date, in order to iron out any technical issues, etc. (2) The hard deadline for the recordings (according to the FOSDEM organizers) is Friday January 21st [3]. After that date, any recording submissions (even just reuploads for corrections) will be strictly limited to a few individual exceptional cases. The reason for such a strict deadline is the sheer scale of FOSDEM with more than 600 talks. Putting the deadline any closer to the conference date might overload the infrastructure and/or the organizers. (3) Make sure that the length of your talk recording is strictly shorter than the length of your talk slot according to the schedule [2] minus at least 5 (preferably 10) minutes for the live Q&A. FOSDEM runs an automated broadcast schedule and recordings longer than the talk slot will be rejected by the submission system. (4) Please adhere to the following technical parameters for the recordings: * Resolution: 1280x720 * Frame rate: 25 fps * Video codec: H.264 video codec, main profile * Video bitrate: <= 2 Mbit/s * Audio codec: AAC audio codec * Audio sample rate: 48 kHz mono * Audio bitrate: 128 kbit/s * Media container: MP4 * Maximum file size: 1 GiB If you deviate from these parameters, the submission system will attempt to transcode your recording, but your mileage might vary and the process might take significantly longer. (5) Content hints: Please do not overload your slides. Use large fonts, clear diagrams without too much fine detail and avoid clutter. Make sure everything is readable even when scaled down. (6) Upload: Please upload your recording through Pentabarf [4]. In the properties of your talk, you should see the "Pre-recorded Video Upload URL" link that redirects you to the upload page. There is also a video tutorial [5] from last year. (7) It is up to you what means you use to prepare your recording. Most videoconferencing tools (e.g. Zoom, Jitsi) allow to do a solo call with screen sharing and provide a built-in recording facility. We have collected a few specific tutorials on the devroom CfP page [6]. In case of any questions or troubles, please do not hesitate to approach Sebastian and me. Thanks! Would an introduction to a not-yet-functional OS be accepted?
by Andrew Warkentin 27 Dec '21

27 Dec '21

Would an introduction to an OS that is not yet functional but has most of the architecture planned out be accepted? I'm currently working on a QNX-like OS based on seL4 <https://gitlab.com/uxrt> but at the moment don't have anything beyond kernel bindings and memory allocators. I do however have the basic architecture all planned out; <https://gitlab.com/uxrt/uxrt-toplevel/-/blob/master/architecture_notes> is a fairly complete (but a bit disorganized) summary. I'd be interested in giving an introductory presentation (loosely following the top section of my architectural notes file).

CfP: Microkernel and Component-based OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2022
by Martin Decky 06 Dec '21

06 Dec '21

Microkernel and Component-based OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2022 CALL FOR PARTICIPATION On-line version of this CfP: http://fosdem.microkernel.info/ The developers and users of several free and open source microkernel-based and component-based operating systems will meet on-line as part of FOSDEM 2022 [1] and will share a developer room. The devroom is currently looking for content in the form of talks and activities related to the area of microkernel-based, unikernel-based, component-based operating systems and similar topics. The devroom has been preliminarily scheduled to Saturday February 5th 2022. The devroom will take place during European day hours. Possible topics of the devroom include, but are not limited to: * introduction of a specific OS or framework * design of subsystems and the general architecture of an OS * languages, tools and toolchains used * enabling support for hardware (architectures, device drivers) and programming languages * development processes, debugging * maintenance, testing and release engineering * safety, security and robustness * trends and challenges * research and open questions * community and governance * use cases, experiences and status updates * best practices and lessons learned * demos This is a call for your participation. We kindly ask you to submit your proposals no later than on December 28th 2021. Please use the Pentabarf web site [2] to submit your proposals. If you already have a user account in Pentabarf, please do not create a new one. Addtionally, make sure to select the Microkernel and Component-based OS Devroom as the track when submitting your talk and include at least the following information in your proposal: * title of your talk * your full name * short abstract of your talk (one or two paragraphs) * duration of your talk (at least 20 minutes and no longer than 50 minutes) * your short bio * your photo The talks will be pre-recorded in advance in January and streamed automatically during the event. This means that you will need to complete and submit your talk recording by January 15th 2022. However, each speaker should be also present on-line just after the streaming of their talk for a live Q&A. You can specify your prefered time slot of your talk. The communication language of the devroom is English. The official devroom schedule (along with the accepted talks) will be announced on December 31st 2021 on the devroom's mailing list [3] and the speakers will be notified via e-mail. The schedule will also be published on the FOSDEM web site. For any comments, questions and suggestions (e.g. suggestions for a different type of event during the devroom), please do not hesitate to use the devroom's mailing list [3]. About the Devroom Since the first Microkernel OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2012 [4], this devroom has been a part of each following FOSDEM (with slight variations of the name). The focus gradually widened to include component-based, unikernel-based and other operating systems. By now, it has become a somewhat institutionalized tradition for the open source operating systems community and it is one of the few places where microkernel enthusiasts and people with different views on how operating systems should work meet regularly. To this date, over a dozen projects have participated in one way or another. Many of the projects face similar challenges but come up with partially different solutions. Therefore, the goal of the devroom is to bring the various projects together, let them exchange ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. Extraordinary Circumstances in 2022 (Again) Due to the extraordinary mode of organization of FOSDEM 2022 (being an on-line event again), the devroom talks will be required to be pre-recorded in January and streamed during the event (with a live Q&A). The talk videos will be published under Creative Commons license by FOSDEM. By submitting a recorded talk, the speaker agrees to have it made available publicly indefinitively. For organizational purposes, we also need contact information of the speakers of accepted talks. Please check the official CfP page [5] of the devroom regularly. We will keep updating it as technical guidelines will be set by the FOSDEM organizers. Microkernel Dinner Sadly, it will not be possible to arrange our traditional microkernel dinner and other in-person social gatherings in Brussels this time again. However, we plan a closing event of the devroom as a loose approximation of the microkernel dinner. The details will be announced later. We encourage the on-line participats to bring their own food and beverages. About FOSDEM FOSDEM [6] is a two-day event organized by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. FOSDEM is widely recognized as one of the best such conferences worldwide. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open source software and hardware projects and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and proposals. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. In recent years, FOSDEM has been hosting more than 5000 developers annually at the ULB Solbosch campus. Due to the circumstances, FOSDEM 2022 will be organized as an on-line event. The participation in FOSDEM is totally free, although the organizers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. No registration is necessary, but attendees are expected to follow the FOSDEM's code of conduct [7]. Important Dates Recap * 2021-12-28: Deadline for talk proposal submission * 2021-12-31: Schedule published and speakers notified of acceptance * 2022-01-15: Deadline for talk pre-recoding submission * 2022-02-05: Devroom taking place on-line Contact In case of any comments, questions and suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact the devroom organizers via the devroom's mailing list [3]. The primary organizers of the devroom in 2022 are: * Sebastian Sumpf * Martin Decky Links [1] https://fosdem.org/2022/ [2] https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22/ [3] https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/microkernel-devroom [4] https://archive.fosdem.org/2012/schedule/track/microkernel_os_devroom.html [5] http://fosdem.microkernel.info/ [6] https://fosdem.org/ [7] https://fosdem.org/2022/practical/conduct/

Microkernel Devroom 2021 talk recordings
by Martin Decky 14 Jan '21

14 Jan '21

Dear speakers, despite the fact that some instructions from the FOSDEM organizers are still not 100% confirmed as final, I would like to ask you to start your work on the recordings of your talks so that you have at least the first version ready for upload by January 15th. Thank you! I summarize all the relevant information and suggestions that are currently available regarding the recordings below. In case you encounter any issues or would need some help with recording your talk, please do not hesitate to approach me directly. Technical requirements for the video [1]: * Resolution: 1280x720 * Frame rate: 25 fps * Video codec: H.264 video codec, main profile * Video bitrate: <= 2 Mbit/s * Audio codec: AAC audio codec * Audio sample rate: 48 kHz mono * Audio bitrate: 128 kbit/s * Media container: MP4 The upload system will verify that you did indeed follow the above constraints. If you did not, the video will be transcoded first (but this will take longer). Again, please make sure that the length of your recording is strictly shorter than the length of your talk slot. It is strongly suggested that it is also shorter than the length of your talk slot minus 10 minutes (reserved for Q&A). FOSDEM 2021 works on a strict broadcast schedule. The system will ruthlessly cut your talk off at the end of your slot. Content hints: Please do not overload your slides. Make sure everything is readable when scaled down slightly. Upload: You should be able to upload your recording through https://penta.fosdem.org in the upcoming days. In your account, you will find a TODO item. Some tutorials for recording the talks [2]: (1) Using the OBS Studio to record your talk: https://dev.to/erikaheidi/how-to-use-obs-studio-to-record-or-stream-live-pr… (2) Another video tutorial for OBS Studio: https://peertube.xwiki.com/videos/watch/c5cf50e3-2277-440a-b339-34874acd00b3 (3) Using ZOOM to record your talk: https://otl.du.edu/knowledgebase/using-zoom-to-record-a-video-presentation/ (4) Most other videoconferencing tools (e.g. Jitsi) also allow to do a solo call with screen sharing and provide a built-in recording facility. To recap, this is the current schedule of the devroom: Begin | End | Speaker | Title ------+-------+-------------------+-------------------------------------- 10:00 | 10:10 | Martin Decky | Welcome and Introductioon 10:10 | 11:10 | Gernot Heiser | The seL4 Report 11:10 | 11:55 | June Andronick | The seL4 Foundation 11:55 | 13:05 | Renzo Davoli | libioth 13:05 | 13:45 | Norman Feske | Pluggable Device Drivers for Genode 13:45 | 14:25 | Anastassios Nanos | Hardware Acceleration for Unikernels 14:25 | 15:05 | Simon Kuenzer | Is the Time Ripe for Unikernels ... 15:05 | 16:05 | Martin Decky | State of Microkernels in 2021 [1] https://github.com/FOSDEM/video/wiki/FOSDEM-2021-video-email-to-speakers [2] https://github.com/blackbeard334/fosdem21-emulator-devroom-cfp/blob/main/SP… Best regards Martin Decky

Microkernel Devroom 2021 working schedule
by Martin Decky 02 Jan '21

02 Jan '21

Dear all, please see below the current working schedule of the Microkernel Devroom at FOSDEM 2021 (this email also serves as the official confirmation of the acceptance of your talk, in case you did not check Pentabarf yourself already). Begin | End | Speaker | Title ------+-------+-------------------+-------------------------------------- 10:00 | 10:10 | Martin Decky | Welcome and Introductioon 10:10 | 11:10 | Gernot Heiser | The seL4 Report 11:10 | 11:55 | Gernot Heiser | The seL4 Foundation 11:55 | 13:05 | Renzo Davoli | libioth 13:05 | 13:45 | Norman Feske | Pluggable Device Drivers for Genode 13:45 | 14:25 | Anastassios Nanos | Hardware Acceleration for Unikernels 14:25 | 15:05 | Simon Kuenzer | Is the Time Ripe for Unikernels ... 15:05 | 16:05 | Martin Decky | State of Microkernels in 2021 If you see any issue or a scheduling conflict on your side, please do not hesitate to approach me. I am certainly also open to any other comments and suggestions. I will consider the schedule confirmed and fixed by the end of Sunday, January 10th 2021. A few remarks: (1) The time values in the schedule are in UTC+1 and _include_ a Q&A part of 10 minutes for each talk. The semantics of the "Duration" entry in Pentabarf has been changed by the FOSDEM organizers to reflect this as well (while the length of the pre-recorded presentation itself has a dedicated entry now and it will be ultimately derived from the exact length of the video recording). The latest info about the organization of the devroom from the FOSDEM organizers could be summarized as follows: The pre-recorded videos will automatically start streaming at the given time according to the schedule and after each talk finishes streaming, the live stream for the Q&A will start. Further discussions could be performed in parallel with the talk (and other talks) via Matrix/IRC and in a dedicated "hallway" stream for each devroom. (2) The initial instructions for the pre-recording of the talks can be found at [1]. Similarly to the organization of the devroom itself, this still appears to be a work-in-progress and therefore I suggest waiting couple more days before you start doing any recording. I will let you know and update the CfP page for your reference when the discussions among the FOSDEM organizers appear to settle. (3) However, be ready to match the length of your presentation to the original duration you have proposed. If your recording is longer (but still within the constraints of the schedule), you will cut in into your Q&A. If your recording is longer than the slot in the schedule, the system might reject it completely. Having written than, we can certainly afford to be a bit cavalier with the length of the talks this year (due to the small number of submissions). Thus, if you feel you would make good use of a longer slot, please let me know. (4) The last item on the schedule is intended as a live panel discussion (which I will humbly moderate). If you would like to participate in the panel or suggest somebody who should participate, I would very much appreciate that. I will also approach some key people in our community directly.
