hello sven,
but why does the key signing party have to be parallel to any of the talks at all? how about making the key signing party a part of the saturday evening event?! "saturday evening at 21h - the key signing party! followed by some free beer (as in "free beer")"
;-) ... nice idea ... but there you will have a small(?) problem ... there are guests, who visit fosdem on saturday and sunday, but have no accomodation near brussel ... (like me) ... therefore we wasn't able to stay longer at fosdem than about 19:00/20:00 ... if the keysigning-party will be at 21:00 with about 200 persons, it'll take about 2 hours (i think) ... and this is much too late ... ;-( the problem i had was the keysigning-party taking place at the same time the cacert-assurances took place ... at different locations ... therefore i had to decide: doing cacert or pgp ... i decided to do cacert ... ;-) but ... maybe it's possible to use a room at about 18:00, when the last talk is finished ... even if you take some minutes from e.g. the bsd/postgres-room to join ... (the beginning for the cacert/pgp-procedure is everytime the same ... and it should be possible to leave presentation running on some slides during the keysigning ... so everybody coming later (5 or 10 minutes due to the long way) has the possibility to read the informations he missed) ... if it's well prepared (maybe the keylist sorted by uid ... or everybody on the list should know his number), it should not be a big problem (well ... some finetuning needed) to do both: pgp and cacert ... since there is the same problem at other events (froscon, mrmcd, ...) i'll check it there how to optimize it ... and how they are doing the keysigning/assurances ... have a nice day ... -- Psssst! sure - some people cannot attend for some reason. and who says that all people who take part in the KSP need to be accomodated to attend? ;-) there is always a problem. and we cannot solve them all. however, i suggest to take out both the key signing and the cacert assurances from the conference and simply do them at the free beer event. then at least the KSP would not interfere with the talks and development work at the conference. there is too much happening during the conference, anyway. so at least take some time for ksp+cacert in the evening. besides, these are social events which brings people together - so shouldnt people have a beer after that together? sounds like a perfect combination to me. Leave the event on sunday afternoon and have a sufficently large corridor (U-Building) available if weather conditions turning out to be ugly. That will do the trick! indeed - this event needs a sufficently large room. however, such a room does not seem to be available. and i doubt the university wants us to clog up one of those corridors. this event may need a new time as well so it won't collide with all those many talks. this can be arranged - for saturday night. with yet another nice beer event. so easy. i am sure the organizers will be happy to know that the KSP won't collide with talks or workshops any more and that all participants can take part at leisure - having a beer right after the usual procedure. :-) Sven

One of the major interest in the KSP is that people from all around the globe can attend and meet together in person. You totally remove this benefit if you make it happen on Saturday night : people with children, people from abroad, people who have activities on Saturday evening won't be able to attend. That's the best way to kill the event.

I'd suggest the organizers note that participants should dress warmly and bring gloves.

I actually do not mind reading about the keysigning party in the main mailing list. The traffic here is low, anyway. Moving the keysigning party to an evening event, as well as factoring KSP discussions into a dedicated mailing list are not good for the KSP (and for FOSDEM).

Well, I am not particularly interested in KSP related discussions and it has been dominating the list (since FOSDEM is over). I don't mind if the KSP is announced here, but the last threads do not interest me. I am subscribed to this mailinglist because it was a low-volume mailinglist. One of the very few good suggestions in this thread.

And a good exmaple for what is not constructive. You might argue that an -announce list might make sense if you really think that this is a high-volume list now. But the KSP is a part of Fosdem as well as booths, talks, whatnot. I will also note that a large chunk of traffic seems to be quite redundant +foo messages. Richard

Maybe not immediately constructive for fixing the KSP problems, but it is constructive for (some of) the users of this list. I provide a solution for something that is (not only) bothering me. If the KSP people can use this mailinglist to question the location and organisation of the KSP. Why can I not use the mailinglist to propose splitting the organisation of the KSP to a seperate mailinglist ? Without being called unconstructive. Simply looking at the archive: http://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2009-February/thread.html about 60% of the mails to this mailinglist were related to the KSP. If you include January too, it is likely even more. -- -- dag wieers, dag@wieers.com, http://dag.wieers.com/ -- [Any errors in spelling, tact or fact are transmission errors]

Would you please stop driving this issue? It's not important how many mails on this list are related to a certain topic of FOSDEM. It's still related to FOSDEM and as such on-topic. What if next year a different topic with a large percentage of mails in January f.e. comes up? Do yo want a separate mailinglist for it then as well? We surely can help generate traffic next year, mind you, like voting on talks after the conference, slides/PDFs not being available beforehand, just to name a few out of the blue. Wound, Salt, Temptation. One Doesn't Want This. If one doesn't like an on-topic matter being discussed on a mailinglist then please use a MUA that supports scoring in case one is driven by the urge to read each and every mail on this list. Just for the record: Nobody forces one to read mails with a subject one dislikes already. That being said, I rest my case. Have fun! -- left blank, right bald

there is no more contradiction than there is doing key signing during lectures.

nothing of this is a requirement. big room + good light. and after you are done you can go back to the bar within a minute. :)

the orga wants to keep people *out* of the corridors so they can actually be used for people to pass through. (didnt Philip Paeps just say that in an interview?!) and sometimes you just gotta try something new. sorry, dear traditionalists. :-P Sven

True, but when looking for alternatives, one should be aware of problems. With the argument above, being outside would be fully OK, as well. Personally, I don't even mind wind or rain, this is why I bring a weather jacket.

A KSP is not all that social. If it were a truly social event, it would take up even more time. KSPs are extremely mechanic and streamlined and that's a good thing. Mixing this with beer, cramped Brussel streets and even more cramped bars seems like a _very_ bad idea. Especially since I would rather do actually social things like talking & drinking than looking at passports of complete strangers. Richard
