Free Java DevRoom: Deadline Extended!
by Mario Torre 15 Dec '14

15 Dec '14

Dear Java Speakers! The deadline is approaching, but since we received a few very nice proposals but not enough to cover the DevRoom schedule, we decided to give everybody a chance and we will extend the deadline one week. We will accept talk proposals until Monday 7th December, 23:59 CET. This deadline will likely *not* be extended again, since we need to try to stay close to the 10th December deadline to allow selected speakers to book their flights and hotels! We're waiting forward for your proposals! What Lies Beneath?: Lessons learned hacking the OpenJDK interpreter/compilers.
by Christine Flood 08 Dec '14

08 Dec '14

Title: What Lies Beneath?: Lessons learned hacking the OpenJDK interpreter/compilers. Abstract: What really happens to your Java code along the way to becoming machine code? Red Hat has been developing an almost pauseless GC for OpenJDK which requires adding read barriers to every object access. We've also developed ARM64 versions of both the server and the client compilers. This has given us quite a bit of experience with the internals of the various methods of generating machine code inside the JVM. This talk will start with a brief tour of the various levels of code generation available and then open up the floor for questions from our panel. Speakers: Andrew Haley, Andrew Dinn, Roman Kennke, and Christine H. Flood Red Hat Inc. Andrew Haley is the engineering lead of the Red Hat Java team, a member of the OpenJDK governing board, and has been a maintainer of GCJ for many years. He is also the lead of the OpenJDK AArch64 port. Andrew Dinn is a member of the Red Hat Java team and also leads the Byteman project. Roman Kennke is a long time free Java (and Software) activist, originally involved in GNU Classpath since 2004, later participated in opening OpenJDK and since then is regular contributor to several parts of OpenJDK (AWT/Swing, general class library, lately Hotspot). After finishing Diploma in 2007 he was employed by aicas, who are building a hard realtime capable Java VM. During 2009 and 2010 worked for Sun Microsystems on Java Webstart. After a short period as contractor for JP Morgan, he's now a Prinipal Software Engineer at Red Hat, where he used to work on Thermostat, the Zero and Shark port of OpenJDK, and currently on the Shenandoah GC. Christine H, Flood has 20+ years experience in programming language design and implementation. She's thrilled to be working for Red Hat on free and open software.

> We will accept talk proposals until Monday 7th December, 23:59 CET. Hopefully, today *is* Monday 7th :-) I’m sorry if yesterday (7th) was the actual deadline, I hope you will still consider my late application… Title: Building an open Internet of Things with Java and Eclipse IoT Abstract: Java is a platform of choice for many IoT applications, from building smart gateways that bridge sensors to the cloud, to device management infrastructures or home automation systems. This session provides you with concrete examples of how to build end-to-end solutions with the Eclipse IoT Java stack and in particular how to use open-source projects such as Paho, Kura, Californium and Concierge on top of OpenJDK. You should join this session if you have Java developments skills that you'd like to put to good use for your next IoT project, and if you are interested in learning more about how to use open standards like CoAP, MQTT, 6LoWPAN, … in your Java applications. Recording me on audio and/or video is: YES. CC-BY-2.0 is OK. Brief Bio: Benjamin Cabé, Internet of Things enthusiast and evangelist at the Eclipse Foundation, has years of experience in connecting things, big and small, together. DevRoom Proposal: OCaml-Java - OCaml on a JVM
by forum＠x9c.fr 06 Dec '14

06 Dec '14

Title: OCaml-Java - OCaml on a a JVM Abstract: The goal of the OCaml-Java project is to allow seamless integration of OCaml and Java. Its compiler produces Java bytecode from OCaml sources, and also includes an extension to the typer in order to allow the manipulation of Java instances from OCaml programs. The Java platform is obviously a key foundation of the project, with both challenges and opportunities. Among challenges are the needs to design a memory layout and a code generator producing efficient bytecode. Among opportunities are the possibility to provide a runtime environment for OCaml that is not hindered by a global runtime lock (thus allowing shared-memory parallelism in OCaml), and the ability to use all Java libraries in OCaml projects. The talk will focus on interoperability and compiler design, with the hope to attract new testers and users. Recording me on audio and/or video: fine under a CC-BY-2.0 license Brief bio: Xavier Clerc has been working at Inria as a research engineer since 2008, but will leave Inria in early 2015 in order to found a startup. He develops the OCaml-Java project during its free time, and had the opportunity to spent several months (summer 2013) in the OCaml Labs (Cambridge University) in order to boost the project. DevRoom Proposal: Packaging Java for Linux Next Steps: OSGi Bundles and Eclipse
by Mat Booth 06 Dec '14

06 Dec '14

Title: Packaging Java for Linux Next Steps: OSGi Bundles and Eclipse Abstract: Packaging Java software for Linux distributions has notoriously been difficult and problematic. Even with recent advances in packaging for projects using maven and related build tools, there are still many islands in the Java eco-system that remain extremely difficult for Linux distros to package. Eclipse projects are one such island. Is this talk we will discuss the build systems in use by Eclipse projects, what problems they posed for Linux distro packaging and what we did to improve the situation. Speakers: Mat Booth, Red Hat UK Video and audio recording okay under a CC license. Mat Booth Software Engineer, Red Hat Eclipse Team
