Free Java Devroom deadline extended!
by Mario Torre 30 Nov '18

30 Nov '18

Hello all! I hope you are recovering from the Black Friday rush that generated almost as many emails as there are OpenJDK mailing lists ;) To celebrate this surreal new found quiet, we decided to send you another email with attachments: the deadline extension for the Java DevRoom. This offer will expire on the 12th of December 2018, one minute before midnight: 23:59 CET, and there won't be any further extension after that, so don't let the date pass without submitting a CFP, or all your unread emails will turn into pumpkins[1]. More informations, as always, can be found on the following link, or at least until that one also turns into something else ;) https://wiki.debian.org/Java/DevJam/2019/Fosdem/CallForParticipation Cheers, Mario [1] Or may not, well, that's a fine art, but it's not bug free. FOSDEM proposal: Tested for Business: An Open and Transparent Quality Kit
by Shelley Lambert 29 Nov '18

29 Nov '18

Title: Tested for Business: An Open and Transparent Quality Kit Abstract: With the proliferation of OpenJDK binaries for a developer or a business to choose from, one factor in determining the selection is quality. How do you know your choice is up to snuff? The AdoptOpenJDK Quality Kit is an open and transparent verification story for OpenJDK binaries. A robust and adaptable test kit that can be utilized by any OpenJDK implementor, and represents the quality bar required by large-scale customers in enterprise environments. We test multiple freely available JDK implementations at AdoptOpenJDK and continue to refine this suite of tests to give the community access to high-quality binaries. Beyond a frank discussion starter on the criteria by which we measure quality, this talk summarizes the real quality requirements of enterprise customers and presents a compelling story for verifying and/or selecting your OpenJDK implementation. Recording: acceptable under CC-BY-2.0 license Speaker Bio: Shelley Lambert is the Test Lead for IBM Runtime Technologies team. She and her team test open and freely available JDK implementations and have delivered the test strategy, test code base, and test frameworks into the Eclipse OMR, Eclipse OpenJ9 and AdoptOpenJDK projects. She is a committer at OpenJ9 and AdoptOpenJDK and draws stories and lessons from her experiences in the open projects where she is most active. Blog URL: https://8thdaytesting.com/

Talk Propsal: JIT in the cloud
by Irwin D'Souza 29 Nov '18

29 Nov '18

Hi, Please find below a submission for a talk. Title: Making the JIT part of the cloud Abstract: Many language runtimes like the JVM rely on JIT compilation to improve application performance, but JIT compilers actively compete with applications for CPU and memory resources. Because of this, a JIT compiler's activities may hinder application throughput and create performance hiccups that can affect quality of service while also complicating resource provisioning. On top of that, it takes a while even for the best JIT compilers to fully compile the performance critical methods of an application to deliver the steady state performance we all expect from the JVM. An approach we are exploring is to decouple the JIT compiler from the rest of the JVM so that JIT compilation can operate as a separate, remote service. This approach opens up the possibility of an elastic, cloud based service offering JIT compilation for many applications, languages, and even different architectures simultaneously. In this talk we will present our experience building an open source JIT-as-a-service prototype based on the Eclipse OpenJ9 JVM. We will discuss some of the engineering challenges we encountered, demonstrate the advantages we've seen thus far, and present performance data for enterprise grade Java EE benchmarks. Recording me on audio and/or video: Acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license (DEFAULT) Brief Bio: I'm a JIT Compiler Developer for Eclipse OpenJ9 / Eclipse OMR working in an enterprise context for the last five years. Talk Proposal
by Irwin D'Souza 28 Nov '18

28 Nov '18

Hi, Please find below a submission for a talk. Title: Dynamic AOT: A peek under the hood Abstract: There is now a growing interest in Ahead Of Time (AOT) compilation technologies in the Java ecosystem. AOT compilation is the natural counterpart of Just In Time (JIT) Compilation because of its potential to enable faster application startup and rampup, while minimizing the CPU and memory costs that come with a JIT compiler. However, Ahead of Time compilation for a dynamic language such as Java offers a suite of complex problems that make it very difficult to AOT compile Java methods as well as a JIT compiler can. In this talk, we'll focus on the "dynamic AOT", or cached JIT code, technology that is used transparently by the open source Eclipse OpenJ9 JVM. We'll present how dynamic AOT works and cover some of the pros and cons of this approach to Ahead of Time compilation. Recording me on audio and/or video: Acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license (DEFAULT) Brief Bio: I'm a JIT Compiler Developer for Eclipse OpenJ9 / Eclipse OMR working in an enterprise context for the last five years. [Proposal] An introduction to Middleware Application Monitoring with Java Mission Control and Flight Recorder
by Mario Torre 28 Nov '18

28 Nov '18

Title: An introduction to Middleware Application Monitoring with Java Mission Control and Flight Recorder Abstract: Recently Open Sourced, Java Mission Control is the industry standard tool for Java performance analysis. This presentation will introduce to tool and highlight some of the important progress made by the community since the project started and ideas we are exploring for the future. We will discuss how application developers can extend their applications to take advantage of the event tracing capabilities of Flight Recorder, now included in OpenJDK 11, and how to create custom tools based on the extensive Mission Control API to analyse specific issues beyond what is offered by default by the Eclipse based tool with very minimal overhead. Talk Proposal: Project Loom
by Ron Pressler 26 Nov '18

26 Nov '18

Hi. I propose the following talk for the Free Java Developer Room at FOSDEM 2019. Title: Project Loom: Weaving executions Abstract: OpenJDK’s Project Loom's mission is to make it easier to write, debug, profile and maintain concurrent applications under heavy load. Threads are a natural and convenient concurrency construct which is being supplanted by less convenient, asynchronous abstractions because threads' implementation in the OS kernel is insufficient for meeting performance demands, and are wasteful in computing resources. Project Loom will introduce fibers as lightweight, efficient threads, managed by the Java runtime, that let developers use the same simple abstraction but with significantly better performance and lower footprint. Fibers are implemented in the JDK libraries on top of multi-prompt, stackful delimited continuations in the JVM. This session will present the current status and challenges of the project -- both of implementation and design -- one year into the project. Bio: Ron Pressler is the tech lead for OpenJDK's Project Loom. Before coming to Oracle, he led the development of Quasar, an open-source Java fibers library. Talk Proposal: Performance tuning Twitter services with Graal and Machine Learning
by Christian Thalinger 06 Nov '18

06 Nov '18

Title: Performance tuning Twitter services with Graal and Machine Learning Abstract: Running Twitter services on Graal has been very successful and saved Twitter a lot of money on datacenter cost. But we would like to run more efficient to reduce cost even more. I mean, who doesn’t? In order to do this we are using our Machine Learning framework called Autotune to tune Graal inlining parameters. This talk will show how much performance improvement we got by autotuning Graal. Recording: OK Bio: Chris Thalinger is a software engineer working on Java Virtual Machines for over 14 years. His main expertise is in compiler technology with Just-In-Time compilation in particular. Initially being involved with the CACAO and GNU Classpath projects, the focus shifted to OpenJDK as soon as Sun made the JDK open-source. Ever since Chris has worked on the HotSpot JVM at Sun, Oracle and now at Twitter. Microblog URL: https://twitter.com/christhalinger <https://twitter.com/christhalinger>

Talk proposal
by Nicolas Frankel 06 Nov '18

06 Nov '18

Hello everyone, Here a talk proposal for FOSDEM: Title: Securing the JVM, neither for fun nor for profit, but do you really have a choice? Abstract: Consider a Java application in a private banking system. A new network administrator is hired, and while going around, he notices that the app is making network calls to an unknown external endpoint. After some investigation, it’s found that this app has been sending for years confidential data to a competitor (or a state, or hackers, whatever). This is awkward. Especially since it could have been avoided. Code reviews are good to improve the hardening of an application, but what if the malicious code was planted purposely? Some code buried in a commit could extract code from binary content, compile it on the fly, and then execute the code in the same JVM run… By default, the JVM is not secured! Securing the JVM for a non-trivial application is complex and time-consuming but the risks of not securing it could be disastrous. In this talk, I’ll show some of the things you could do in an unsecured JVM. I’ll also explain the basics of securing it, and finally demo a working process on how to do it. Note for the organizers: The Security Manager is ages old, but interestingly enough, every time I gave this talk, nearly 95% of the room didn't know about it. Since running an unsecured JVM is very risky, I believe a lot of people can benefit from that talk. Recording: Acceptable under the license proposed Bio: After 15+ years experience consulting for many different customers, in a wide range of contexts (such as telecoms, banking, insurances, large retail and public sector), recently turned coat to a Developer Advocacy career path. Usually working on Java/Java EE and Spring technologies, but with specific interests like Kotlin, Software Quality, Build Processes and Rich Internet Applications. Currently working for Exoscale. Also double as a teacher in universities and higher education schools, a trainer and triples as a book author. Microblog: https://twitter.com/nicolas_frankel Blog: https://blog.frankel.ch/

25 minutes talk idea Free Java Developer Room at FOSDEM 2019
by Alex Dettinger 02 Nov '18

02 Nov '18

Hi, Please find below a submission for a talk. Title: Apache Camel and the mind-bender integration scenarios Abstract: Apache Camel is an open source framework leveraging the power of Java to face integration challenges. Enterprise Integration Patterns could be combined with a multitude of data sources and destinations via a Domain Specific Language. This powerful association often results into simple solutions to common problems. However, in this episode, tricky integration scenarios are trying to turn our mind upside down. Fortunately, The Cameleers, an ancient developer community, have left a defense mechanism called bean binding. We just need to reassemble few concepts and run some examples. Attendees to this presentation could expect to be presented a quick overview of Apache Camel. A bit deeper, the audience would learn how and when to use custom Java code from a camel route. Recording me on audio and/or video: Acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license (DEFAULT) Me: I'm just a Java developer using Apache Camel in enterprise context since a decade. On my free time, I'm also committer on Apache Camel. https://github.com/aldettinger Many thanks, Alex
