Schedule and approved talks!
by Mario Torre 14 Feb '18

14 Feb '18

Hello all! I will be sending each one of you an email. The quality of each proposal was incredible, it was the hardest DevRoom to organise so far, excluding any of the proposal was not easy, and it was one reason why we delayed this announcement. We have packed the DevRoom as much as we could possibly do, but even so we only had so much time. I wish to thank, personally and on behalf of the committee, each and anyone of you who proposed a talk, hoping to see you all at FOSDEM this year! Without further ado, this is the list of selected talks and the draft schedule for our DevRoom. 10:25 10:30 - Welcome 10:30 11:15 - State of OpenJDK 11:20 11:45 - The OpenJDK Developer Experience 11:50 11:15 - Opening the Oracle JDK 12:20 12:45 - The Z Garbage Collector - An Introduction 12:50 13:15 - Rubber 'Duke' Debugging 13:20 13:45 - MethodHandles Everywhere! 13:50 14:15 - Top Ten Metrics for Evaluating your Garbage Collector 14:20 14:45 - Graal: How to use the new JVM JIT compiler in real life 14:50 15:15 - JVM startup: why it matters to the new world order 15:20 15:45 - Class Metadata: A User Guide 15:50 16:15 - Java in a World of Containers 16:20 16:45 - Class Data Sharing - Sharing Economy in the HotSpot VM 16:50 17:15 - Hairy Security 17:20 17:45 - Hacking the JVM from Java 17:50 18:15 - G1 - Not^H^H^HNever Done! 18:20 19:00 - OpenJDK Governing Board Q&A We also have a small list of backup talks, in no particular order: AdoptOpenJDK: Enhancing OpenJDK’s “build, test, contribute” pipeline Restful Services with the Play Framework and a Security Level with JWT Shenandoah GC: What We Know In 2018 Marlin, an OpenJDK Success Story: Vector Graphics on Steroids for Java 2D and JavaFX I will be in touch with everyone directly shortly (just need some time to wrap up, but I'll start sending emails out today). Free Java DevRoom talk proposal: Marlin, an OpenJDK Success Story: Vector Graphics on Steroids for Java 2D and JavaFX
by Laurent Bourgès 01 Feb '18

01 Feb '18

Title Marlin, an OpenJDK Success Story: Vector Graphics on Steroids for Java 2D and JavaFX Abstract The Marlin renderer is an open source pure-Java java2D anti-aliasing renderer, forked from the OpenJDK's Pisces renderer to provide a faster alternative with very good scalability to OpenJDK renderers. Since dec 2015 I contributed back the Marlin renderer to OpenJDK 9 by the successfull JEP 265. In 2016 I ported it to JavaFX in the MarlinFX project to replace the shape rasterizer in OpenJFX 9, integrated in Dec. 2016. In 2017 I improved Marlin even more: new double precision pipeline & efficient path clipping, coming to OpenJDK 10. In this session, you will learn what's new in the Marlin / MarlinFX github projects, how to use Marlin in Java 8 / 9 / 10 (including some tuning), which releases are integrated in OpenJDK / JFX 9 & 10, and get performance results on both 2D & JavaFX renderers. As the single contributor to the Marlin project, I am looking for other people to help me testing & implementing new features. Recording me on audio and/or video YES acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license (DEFAULT) Brief Bio Laurent Bourgès is a software engineer at the OSUG data center (CNRS) in the French Alps, working with scientists (astronomers). I learned computer programming at 5 years old (basic on zx-81) then Borland C++ on my pc computers and discovered a passion for 3D and raytracing software. After studying Physics at master level, I worked 9 years in paris in several software service companies on distributed architecture based on J2EE server clusters. I moved into Grenoble in 2009 to join the R&D software team working on observation tools for astronomers and got an academic permanent position in 2014. I have now 15 years of experience in Java programming mostly on concurrency, multi-threading & performance (optimisation, benchmarks). On my spare time, I am the author of the Marlin renderer & MarlinFX rasterizer, derived from the OpenJDK Pisces (shape) renderer. Since 2015 I am contributing to OpenJDK 9 to integrate the Marlin renderer and since 2016, to OpenJFX 9. In Oct 2017 I presented my FOSS work on the Marlin renderer at JavaOne. Talk proposal: Shenandoah GC: What We Know In 2018
by Roman Kennke 13 Dec '17

13 Dec '17

Title: Shenandoah GC: What We Know In 2018 Abstract: Shenandoah is an ultra-low pause garbage collector for OpenJDK, developed by Red Hat. It adds concurrent compaction to the mix, making all heavy-weight phases in GC cycles concurrent, and thus reducing latency, especially for applications with large heaps. This talk is about brief status for Shenandoah in 2018 and what changed in past years, the performance successes it has, the challenges faced by the implementation, the ideas that are being tried, and plans for the future. Speakers: Aleksey Shipilev, Red Hat Roman Kennke, Red Hat Time: can do a short one in 25 minutes, but 45 minutes would be better Bios: Aleksey is working on Java performance for 10+ years. Today he is employed by Red Hat, where he does OpenJDK development and performance work. Aleksey develops and maintains a number of OpenJDK subprojects, including JMH, JOL, and JCStress. He is also an active participant in expert groups and communities dealing with performance and concurrency. Prior joining Red Hat, Aleksey was working on Apache Harmony at Intel, then moved to Sun Microsystems, which was later consumed by Oracle. Roman Kennke is Prinipal Software Engineer at Red Hat, where he worked and works on OpenJDK and several related projects, including Thermostat, the Zero and Shark ports of OpenJDK, and currently on the Shenandoah GC. In past lifes, he worked at aicas (realtime Java VM), Sun Microsystems (Webstart, Swing) and JP Morgan (you don't want to know). Recording: ok

Title: Java Code Coverage mechanics Abstract: JaCoCo is a widely adopted code coverage library for the JVM which is integrated in many build tools and IDEs. In this talk the we will explore the tricky implementation details of the library, including support of Java 9. And how participation in OpenJDK Quality Outreach helps us test OpenJDK Early Access builds, report bugs to OpenJDK and improve the library. Time: Usually this talk takes 35-40 min, 25 might be too tight, but can do my best to fit in 25. Speaker: Evgeny Mandrikov Twitter: @_godin_ Recording me on audio and/or video: Acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license Bio: Evgeny is a contributor to various open source projects and a speaker at international conferences and JUGs. Together with Marc Hoffmann, he is the project lead of JaCoCo and the award-winning EclEmma project at the Eclipse Foundation that integrates JaCoCo into Eclipse. In his day job at SonarSource Evgeny develops SonarQube’s static source code analysis for languages such as Java, C/C++, C#, JavaScript.

Talk proposal: Multi-Release JARs - How to build them?
by Uwe Schindler 10 Dec '17

10 Dec '17

Title: Multi-Release JARs - How to build them? Abstract: Multi-Release JARs are a cool new feature that came with Java 9, but explicit support to create them was completely missing in any of the available build tools outside of the JDK. Currently users are on their own: You need to have separate build trees with lots of code duplication, you need multiple JVMs during building, and finally you have to use a custom Maven, Gradle, or Ant tasks to package your JAR file. This talk will give an overview about Multi-Release JARs and how to handle them in your build tool. Finally, it will show a cool "alternative" that is used in Apache Lucene to link the search engine to some of the new Java 9+ highly optimized static methods for bounds checking or array comparisons. Time: Short Speaker: Uwe Schindler Twitter: @thetaph1 Blog: blog.thetaphi.de Website: www.thetaphi.de Recording me on audio and/or video: Acceptable under any CC-BY license Bio: Uwe is committer and PMC member of Apache Lucene and Solr. His main focus is on development of Lucene Java. He implemented fast numerical search and is maintaining the new attribute-based text analysis API. He studied Physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and works as managing director for SD DataSolutions GmbH in Bremen, Germany, a company that provides consulting and support for Apache Lucene, Elasticsearch, and Apache Solr. He also works for “PANGAEA – Publishing Network for Geoscientific & Environmental Data” where he implemented the portal's geo-spatial retrieval functions with Lucene Java. Uwe had talks about Lucene at various international conferences like the previous FOSDEM, Berlin Buzzwords, ApacheCon EU/US, Lucene Revolution, Lucene Eurocon, and various local meetups. ----- Uwe Schindler uschindler(a)apache.org ASF Member, Apache Lucene PMC / Committer Bremen, Germany http://lucene.apache.org/
