Accepted speakers!

Hi all, First of all, this has been the most difficult selection ever in the history of our devroom. There's just so much space and we could easily fill 3 days with great quality content. Unfortunately this means an higher than average ratio of talks that had to be rejected but this has nothing to do with the quality of the presentations or the speakers, in the end we tried to do a balancing based on the historical focus of the Java DevRoom, and I think we managed this. Without further ado, here is the selection for this year, with the tentative schedule: 10:30 - 11:15 State of OpenJDK 11:20 - 11:45 Project Loom: Advanced concurrency for fun and profit 11:50 - 12:15 TornadoVM: A Virtual Machine for Exploiting High-Performance Heterogeneous Execution of Java Programs 12:20 - 13:00 ByteBuffers are dead, long live ByteBuffers! 13:05 - 13:30 Free at Last! The Tale of Jakarta EE 13:35 - 14:00 Shenandoah 2.0 14:05 - 14:45 JMC & JFR - 2020 Vision 14:50 - 15:15 Hacking on GraalVM: A (very) Rough Guide 15:20 - 15:45 Reducing OpenJDK Java Garbage Collection times with stack allocation 15:50 - 16:15 G1: To infinity and beyond 16:20 - 16:45 Just-in-time compiling Java in 2020 16:50 - 17:15 Helpful NullPointerExceptions - The little thing that became a JEP 17:20 - 17:45 Taming Metaspace: a look at the machinery, and a proposal for a better one 17:50 - 18:15 The OpenJDK JVM : Securing a moving target or What could possibly go wrong? 18:20 - 19:00 JRuby Startup and AOT I want to thank each of you personally for sending such an impressive quality of proposal. Talk proposal: ByteBuffers are dead, long live ByteBuffers!
by Maurizio Cimadamore 13 Dec '19

13 Dec '19

Title: ByteBuffers are dead, long live ByteBuffers! Abstract: Direct buffers are, to date, the only way to access foreign, off-heap memory. Despite their success, direct buffers suffer from some limitations --- stateful-ness, lack of addressing space, non-deterministic deallocation to name a few --- which makes them a less-than-ideal choice under certain workloads. In this talk we paint the path to the future: a safe, supported and efficient foreign memory access API for Java. By providing a more targeted solution to the problem of accessing foreign memory, not only developers will be freed by the above limitations - but they will also enjoy improved performances, as the new API is designed from the ground-up with JIT optimizations in mind - and all without sacrificing memory access safety. Talk proposal: Ecosystem Stewarship, Revisited
by Dalibor Topic 11 Dec '19

11 Dec '19

Title: Ecosystem Stewarship, Revisited Abstract: Keeping Java a favorite choice for millions of developers doesn’t happen by accident; careful stewardship is needed to keep up with rising challenges and developer expectations. But good stewardship doesn’t only mean having a compelling technical roadmap — it also means keeping the community and ecosystem vibrant. Not all of it is obvious and not all rumors are true, so this talk is going to shine a light onto what the Java team at Oracle has done for us, lately, in OpenJDK and beyond, with curious charts and cute comics. * Recording me on audio and/or video acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license * Brief Bio Dalibor Topic lives in Hamburg, Germany, and works as Consulting Product Manager for Oracle. He joined the OpenJDK project in order to help make it a successful open source project, and stayed for anchoring Java in Linux distributions, and as an all around Java F/OSS community guy. He joined the Java strategy team at Oracle to help provide community feedback into the long-term strategy planning. * Twitter: @robilad cheers, dalibor topic -- <http://www.oracle.com> Dalibor Topic | Consulting Product Manager Phone: +494089091214 <tel:+494089091214> | Mobile: +491737185961 <tel:+491737185961> | Video: dalibor.topic(a)oracle.com <sip:dalibor.topic@oracle.com> Oracle Global Services Germany GmbH Hauptverwaltung: Riesstr. 25, D-80992 München Registergericht: Amtsgericht München, HRB 246209 Geschäftsführer: Ralf Herrmann <http://www.oracle.com/commitment> Oracle is committed to developing practices and products that help protect the environment

Talk proposal: How to become an OpenJDK contributor
by Jesper Wilhelmsson 10 Dec '19

10 Dec '19

* Title: How to become an OpenJDK contributor * Abstract: Any and every developer can engage in the OpenJDK project and be part of improving the Java experience. There are many ways to contribute to OpenJDK. One of the more obvious ones is probably to participate in the design and development of language and runtime features. This talk will guide you on the road to become an active contributor to OpenJDK. We will go through all the steps from idea to contribution and look at how to actually contribute in practice. We will have a brief look at the structure behind the OpenJDK project and how to utilize the tools that are provided to aid the work. * Recording me on audio and/or video acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license * Brief Bio Jesper is a developer in the Java Platform Group at Oracle. With a 17 year history in the JVM and garbage collection his focus today is in areas such as JDK wide process management, JVM security, JDK integrations, early access promotion, and overall JDK stability. Jesper has authored large parts of the HotSpot engineering pages on the OpenJDK wiki. Best regards, /Jesper

Free Java DevRoom Talk Proposal: JMC & JFR - 2020 Vision
by Jie Kang 10 Dec '19

10 Dec '19

Hi, Title: JMC & JFR - 2020 Vision Abstract: JDK Flight Recorder provides production time profiling and diagnostics via a compact events-based infrastructure inside the Hotspot JVM itself. JDK Mission Control is a stand-alone application that provides real-time monitoring information for Hotspot JVMs, as well as tools to read, automatically analyze and visualize flight recording data produced by JDK Flight Recorder. When this talk is presented, JMC 7.1.0 has (hopefully) been out for a little while. This presentation talks about what is new and the roadmap for the upcoming JMC 8. We will also discuss recent changes in the project, such as the move to Skara. Towards the end we will demo how JDK Flight Recorder and JMC core libraries can be used to diagnose applications deployed in container orchestration platforms. Recording: Okay Presenters: Jie Kang (Red Hat) Speaker Bio: Jie Kang is a Senior Software Engineer in Red Hat’s Java team, mostly working on JMC and JFR related technologies. This includes cloud-related tooling, packaging for RHEL and Fedora and backports of JFR patches to 11 and below. Regards, Jie Kang

Proposal: JRuby Startup and AOT
by Charles Oliver Nutter 05 Dec '19

05 Dec '19

Title: JRuby Startup and AOT Abstract: Rubyists work from a command line, which makes JRuby startup time a critical concern. Traditionally, the JVM has not been optimized for startup, but that's changing. This talk will explore all available options for making a heavy runtime like JRuby start up quickly, from using class data caching services like Hotspot's CDS and OpenJ9's Quickstart to ahead-of-time compilation of JRuby using GraalVM's Native Image. We'll compare approaches and trade-offs. Notes: We will only be exploring and discussing the open-source parts of GraalVM (and any other tools we include). This talk will be presented by Charles Oliver Nutter and Thomas Enebo - Charlie
