by Matthew Gilliard 27 Oct '17

27 Oct '17

Thanks for reading :) Title: Opening the Oracle JDK Abstract: > We are going to open-source all of the features in the > Oracle JDK. There will be zero differences between the > OpenJDK and the Oracle JDK. - Mark Cavage, JavaOne keynote October 2017 This announcement by Mark got a big round of applause, but what does it actually mean? What are the commercial features and when will they be available? I'll talk through some of them, focusing mainly on those which are interesting and/or likely to be released soon. Speaker Bio: Matthew is a (somewhat) functional programmer who enjoys all kinds of language nerdery as well as whisky. He currently works on open-source code at Oracle, helping to make Java in the cloud as good as it can be. Past lives include OpenStacking, teaching English to highschoolers and a whole lot of Clojure and Java.

Talk proposal: JDK 9 TLS security enhancements in practice
by Martin Toshev 23 Oct '17

23 Oct '17

Title: JDK 9 TLS security enhancements in practice Abstract: The JDK has been kept up to date with latest releases of the SSL/TLS series of protocols by providing a blocking SSLSocket-based API and a non-blocking SSLEngine-based one. JDK 9 brings a lot of cool new TLS-related security enhancements such as DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security), ALPN TLS extension and OCSP stapling among others. In the session we will demonstrate them in a series of example use cases using a simple application server for the purpose. Bio: Martin is an IT consultant, Java enthusiast and a board member of the Bulgarian Java user group where he helps with the organization of the jPrime conference. His areas of interest include the wide range of Java-related technologies, messaging brokers (especially RabbitMQ for which he recently authored a book), software integration, cloud-based software architectures, security, relational and NoSQL databases. You can reach him for any Java and FOSS-related topics (especially Eclipse and the OpenJDK).

I have 3 talks proposal for this upcoming FOSDEM: <http://Hairy%20Security%20%20the%20many%20threats%20to%20a%20Java%20web%20a…> - *Hairy Security* - the many threats to a Java web app <http://Hairy%20Security%20%20the%20many%20threats%20to%20a%20Java%20web%20a…> - a funny, witty talk, delivered with François Le Droff (Adobe) on the many danger a Java webapp faces nowdays - and how to protect yourself from them - This talk was delivered, a couple of years ago, at Devoxx France <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axpjklk-5HE> and has been updated and quite enhanced since then - *Java & Linux the "best of both worlds"* <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM18/event/5982> - also delivered with François Le Droff, this talk focuses on how to leverage Linux OS when developing a Java Microservices - this presentation will demonstrate that, in fact, both technologies are a match made in heaven and that you can make an app very resilient and scalable, by using feature from both environement. - *Building software like houses ?* - IT versus Concrete challenge: Who does it better? - Not focuses on Java, but still relevant to the java dev-room, this talk is made of a cross return of experience on project management in both IT and the Civil Enginerring industry. - We stole from the design pattern and early project methodolies years ago and now they are stealing agile from us - but, are any of us any better to our job ? Hope this little sum-up helps and of course let me know if you want me to do something else to make your life easier while processing the submissions! Cheers,
