Talk proposal: IcedWeb - the future of past applications
by Jiri Vanek 31 Oct '18

31 Oct '18

Title: IcedWeb - the future of past applications IcedTea-Web is open Implementation of javaws. It was never fully compatible with specification, but we did our best, and keep trying to satisfy reported unimplemented parts. Recently ITW crossed several borders - support for Windows and support for OpenjdDK 11. With death of plugin also portable builds whic are known to run on Mac. With plugin deprecated long ago and javaws abandoned in Oracle JDK11, IcedTea-Web may be the only chance for many legacy applications. Lets summary current state J. -- Jiri Vanek Senior QE engineer, OpenJDK QE lead, Mgr. Red Hat Czech jvanek(a)redhat.com M: +420775390109

Talk Proposal: AdoptOpenJDK.net - Collaborative Infrastructure as Code and build farm for OpenJDK
by Martijn Verburg 31 Oct '18

31 Oct '18

*Title:* AdoptOpenJDK.net - Collaborative Infrastructure as Code and Build Farm for OpenJDK *Abstract:* AdoptOpenJDK.net is a new community, infrastructure as code project and a build farm for OpenJDK. AdoptOpenJDK came about following a discussion about the general lack of an open and reproducible build & test system for the OpenJDK source across multiple platforms. The intention is to provide binaries and hardware access for all of the major platforms, for the purposes of: * Allowing end users to have a reliable source of OpenJDK binaries for all platforms. * Research and Development by OpenJDK developers, academics and researchers. * An open, common, audited, build infrastructure for vendors to use (if they wish). * Providing a place to try out build infrastructure ideas that might one day be re-implemented in the OpenJDK project. This talk will give you a tour of AdoptOpenJDK (code, infrastructure and major achievements to date) as well as an open discussion on how the community can best utilize its resources. *Bio:* Martijn Verburg is the CEO of jClarity, leader of the London Java Community, a Java Champion and member of the Adoption Group in OpenJDK. He is one of the co-founders of AdoptOpenJDK and works on other Java / OSS bodies such as the JCP and JakartaEE. Cheers, Martijn

Talk proposal: Java Security Animated
by Martin Toshev 30 Oct '18

30 Oct '18

Title: Java Security Animated Abstract: Security concepts incorporated in the Java platform and major frameworks like Spring, Java EE and OSGi are typically difficult to grasp and understand in depth. The same applies for Java concurrency utilities and a tool called Java Concurrent Animated was created to address this issue a few years back. Following its trail a similar tool called Java Security Animated is aiming to lower the entry barrier to security portfolio of the Java platform. Using the tool we will have a short journey in the security world of the Java platform. Bio: Martin is an IT consultant, Java enthusiast and has been heavily involved in the activities of the Bulgarian Java User group (BG JUG) where he is a board member. His areas of interest include the wide range of Java-related technologies (such as Servlets, JSP, JAXB, JAXP, JMS, JMX, JAX-RS, JAX-WS, Hibernate and Spring Framework. At present he is an architect for Resolve Systems.

Talk Proposal: Java Checkpoint/Restore
by Christine Flood 29 Oct '18

29 Oct '18

Title: Java Checkpoint Restore Abstract: Java has evolved significantly in the past 20+ years. Users still want to run highly scalable monolithic applications, but now they also want to run in the cloud with fast startup and small footprint. Checkpointing will solve at least half of that problem. I'll show you how to checkpoint your java application and then restore it on a different machine, or several different machines. An application that might take minutes to warm up, can be warmed up, garbage collected, etc and then checkpointed. Users can restore Java processes in ms. I'll give an overview of CRIU (Checkpoint Restore In Userspace) a Linux utility that Java checkpointing is based on, present the proposed Java API, and then demo some interesting use cases. Recording me on audio and/or video is acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license (DEFAULT) Brief Bio: Christine Flood has been working on programming language design and implementation for over 20 years. She's worked for academia and industry from the labs to the trenches. She's currently focused on checkpointing for Java and she can't wait to tell you about it.

Proposal: the doom of java: part 3
by Blackbeard334 29 Oct '18

29 Oct '18

Abstract: If you know what a 486 is, then you most probably know Doom(IDKFA, IDDQD). If you don't...then shame on you! Fast-forward a decade, and Doom 3 is released! Fast-forward another decade, and Doom 3 is open sourced!! Fast-forward a couple of years, and some moron starts porting Doom 3 to Java(free java even)!!! *ahem*...I don't remember the exact reason why I started the project, but I think I was just curious. And to be fair, I thought I would be done in like 6 months. So this talk will be a short overview of the status of ~4 years of development, highlighting some of the . biggest problems(and surprises) of redeveloping a game of this scale and complexity, in Java...
