Hello all, It has been a difficult decision, the number of quality submission was extremely high as usual, and if we had more time, we would have accepted them all. This year, it has been complicated by the fact that that there was some confusion over the appropriate place where to direct them, Penta, this mailing list, and my own private mail address which led to a bit of delay since I had to sort all of the proposals and be sure I didn't miss any before the voting could start (btw, the best answer is: this mailing list!). Anyway, without further ado, here is the list of presentations, in no particular order (some presentations have multiple authors, I'm only listing one here for reference): * Optimizing Above the JVM in JRuby 9000 - Charles Oliver Nutter * This Is Not A Drill - Preparing for JDK 9 - Dalibor Topić * Adoption's Group Cultural Guide to OpenJDK - Adoption Group Members * Hunting the bug from Hell - Andrew Haley * The HotSpot Whitebox-Testing API - Volker Simonis * Shenandoah, Theory and Practice - Christine Flood * ARM32 support in our lifetimes - Edward Nevill * The State of OpenJDK - Mark Reinhold * Java 9: Juggling the Jigsaw - Mark Reinhold * Beyond Java 9 - Mark Reinhold * Huge code bases - Application monitoring with Hystrix - Roman Mohr * RetroPi Handheld Raspberry Pi Gaming Console - Stephen Chin * Zulu and OpenJDK for Embedded Java Development - Simon Ritter * Insights into the Eclipse IDE open source project - Lars Vogel * Thermostat for Developers - Mario Torre * Marlin renderer, a successful fork and join the OpenJDK 9 project - Laurent Bourgès * Bug hunting with Apache Lucene - Uwe Schindler * Displaying Application Events in Thermostat Using Byteman - Andrew Dinn * Dotty, a next generation Scala compiler - Guillaume Martres * Fault Injection Testing With BMUnit - Andrew Dinn * JEP 243: Java-Level JVM Compiler Interface and what it can be used for - Christian Thanlinger I will also send mails directly to all the speakers in the next few hours. I will also start working on the schedule next, with updates on this mailing list (and on the FOSDEM website). I wish to thank every one that took the time to submit a proposal. Dev Room Proposal: Java Caching and auto tuning your heap and cache sizes - A first humble shot at it
by Jens Wilke 15 Dec '15

15 Dec '15

Title: Java Caching and auto tuning your heap and cache sizes - A first humble shot at it Summary: This talk presents some thoughts on how to improve Java enterprise applications memory efficiency, either to achieve higher densities in cloud computing environments or scale up heap memory sufficiently in high demand phases. The basic idea is to establish feedback loops from the garbage collector to the caching layer and, ideally, adapt dynamically tuning parameters to achieve the most efficient operation. I will present a summary of my ideas and findings on this topic and some experiments with the caching library cache2k on real world applications. There will be also some (little) time left for discussion, since I'd like to engage the Java VM community, to explore what VM or GC features can also be exploited or maybe come up with some new ideas to support the caching middleware. Recording me on audio and/or video: acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license Speaker Bio: Jens Wilke is a coding veteran and part-time entrepreneur in a boutique software engineering company in Munich. In ancient times Jens worked on many different projects, from embedded systems up to software for the IBM mainframe, in startups and in "legacy" companies. He is enthusiastic about improving performance, within developer teams as well as in complex software systems. For the last two years he dedicates every spare time to research and help out in the area of Java Caching. He has crafted a Java caching library with unique and innovative features, answers regularly caching related questions on Stack Overflow and contributes to the Java caching standard JSR107. Links: http://cache2k.org http://cruftex.net Time slot: I'd like to apply for a 45 minute time slot to set aside 10-15 minutes for discussion. -- "Everything superfluous is wrong!" // Jens Wilke - headissue GmbH - Germany \// https://headissue.com

Talk Proposal: AArch32 Project
by Edward Nevill 15 Dec '15

15 Dec '15

Title: The AArch32 Project - ARM32 support in our lifetimes Duration: 25 minutes Abstract: Last year I presented some work I had done on the ARM microJIT to enable it on the Raspberry PI. At the end I suggested the creation of an AArch32 project to do a fully fledged ARM32 port. I am pleased to say that an OpenJDK AArch32 port has been created (http://openjdk.java.net/projects/aarch32-port) and we have an initial port of the Template Interpreter thanks to some excellent work by Joseph Joyce. This talk will update on the progress of the AArch32 project and also a call for help so we can finally get the ARM32 properly supported in OpenJDK. Speaker Bio: Edward Nevill has been working with the ARM architecture since 1988 and is responsible for some of the darker corners. He has been working with OpenJDK since 2010 and is responsible for some dark corners there as well.

Talk Proposal: Displaying Application Events in Thermostat Using Byteman
by Andrew Dinn 14 Dec '15

14 Dec '15

See below. regards, Andrew Dinn ----------- Senior Principal Software Engineer Red Hat UK Ltd Registered in UK and Wales under Company Registration No. 3798903 Directors: Michael Cunningham (US), Michael O'Neill (Ireland), Paul Argiry (US) ----- 8< -------- 8< -------- 8< -------- 8< -------- 8< -------- 8< --- Title: Displaying Application Events in Thermostat Using Byteman Duration: 30 minutes? Abstract: Thermostat is more than just an open source tool for performance monitoring and analysis of the JVM. It is also an extensible platform which supports development of many different data capture and visualization tools, allowing users to collate and display disparate data from a runtime environment. One such extension currently being developed by Red Hat is a Byteman plugin. Events and data captured by Byteman rules can be reported to the Thermostat agent and displayed in the Thermostat user interface. This talk will provide a preview of the Byteman Thermostat plugin in action. Byteman will be used to inject rules into a running application and into the underlying JDK runtime. These rules will all use the Thermostat-Byteman Helper, provided as part of the plugin implementation, to pass a variety of data through to the Thermostat agent. The data will be collected and rendered using several of the available Thermostat information displays. By making simple changes to the loaded rule sets and the corresponding displays we will show how you can rapidly shift focus from viewing one set of application events to another. Speaker Bio: Andrew Dinn is a member of the Red Hat OpenJDK team. He also leads JBoss project Byteman.

CFP: Bug hunting with Apache Lucene
by Uwe Schindler 12 Dec '15

12 Dec '15

Title: Bug hunting with Apache Lucene Abstract: When Oracle released Java 7 GA, it contained a serious loop optimization bug, affecting Apache projects like Lucene, Solr, or Elasticsearch. Since that time, the Apache Lucene team works together with the Oracle and OpenJDK developers to test early-access releases with Apache Lucene's codebase. Due to Apache Lucene's heavy, low level code with many tight loops and unusual code patterns, it is an ideal testing environment for the Hotspot optimizer. Loops, iterators, and bitset operations are executed millions of times per full text query to execute finite state automata, collect and filter results, and sort them. Bugs caused by mis-compilation of code that are hard to reproduce in isolation can be easily reproduced with Lucene. In addition, Lucene uses a pseudo-randomized testing infrastructure triggering different Hotspot optimizations on each test execution. In this talk, Uwe will show the current state of Java 9 EA testing. He will also present the problems caused by hard to reproduce issues, e.g. occurred after the changes to arraycopy or AVX optimizations in Hotspot. [Optional: As a short excursion, he will also present typical changes that had to be made, to make Lucene's Java code work with Jigsaw.] Bio: Uwe is committer and PMC member of Apache Lucene and Solr. His main focus is on development of Lucene Java. He implemented fast numerical search and is maintaining the new attribute-based text analysis API. After the release of Java 7 in 2011 he started to intensify communication of Apache Lucene team with Oracle and OpenJDK team members and introduced the Java EA testing, running of his company's servers. He studied Physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and works as managing director for SD DataSolutions GmbH in Bremen, Germany, a company that provides consulting and support for Apache Lucene, Elasticsearch, and Apache Solr. He also works for “PANGAEA – Publishing Network for Geoscientific & Environmental Data” where he implemented the portal's geo-spatial retrieval functions with Lucene Java. Uwe had talks about Lucene at various international conferences like the previous FOSDEM, Berlin Buzzwords, ApacheCon EU/US, Lucene Revolution, Lucene Eurocon, and various local meetups. Recording/streaming on audio/video is acceptable under a CC-BY license. I am either fine with a short or long track, because the talk can be made as detailed as time allows :-) ----- Uwe Schindler uschindler(a)apache.org ASF Member, Apache Lucene PMC / Committer Bremen, Germany http://lucene.apache.org/
