Talk proposal: The OpenJDK Developer Experience
by Erik Helin 30 Nov '17

30 Nov '17

Title: The OpenJDK Developer Experience Abstract: Much has happened in the last year for developers contributing to OpenJDK: - the repositories have been consolidated into a single repository - the run-test make target has been introduced - the JTReg (and jcov, asmtools and jtharness) build have been greatly improved - there is now a binary build of OpenJDK that can be used as --boot-jdk (on Linux x86-64) The situation for HotSpot developers has also improved over the years: - the HotSpot build system was converted to the "new" build system - a proper unit test framework for C++ code (googletest) was added - debug symbols are no longer zipped by default - the JDK and HotSpot JTReg testlibraries were combined into one This talk will show how all these changes make the OpenJDK developer experience a lot smoother. The speakers will also share their personal tips and tricks on how to work even faster on OpenJDK! We also realize that the OpenJDK developer experience is far from optimal, and would therefore like this talk to initiate a discussion on what could be improved and how people can get involved. Speakers: - Erik Duveblad (formerly Helin), OpenJDK developer working at Oracle - Roman Kennke, OpenJDK developer working at Red Hat Time: 25 min Recording video and/or audio CC-BY-2.0 license: Erik Duveblad: fine Roman Kennke: fine Blog: Erik Duveblad: - Roman Kennke: https://rkennke.wordpress.com Microblog: Erik Duveblad: - Roman Kennke: @rkennke on Twitter Thanks, Erik & Roman

Propsal: Rubber 'Duke' Debugging
by Blackbeard334 30 Nov '17

30 Nov '17

Abstract: In the spirit of Jon Bentley(not the top gear dude), we will take this chance to talk about everybody’s favorite pastime...debugging! As programmers, we spend most of our time debugging. I know I know, most of us never 'write' any bugs(it's ALWAYS your pesky colleagues). Still, somebody has to clean it all up. And yet, there's very little literature about debugging. Fewer conference talks still. But that's about to change. This talk will be a collection of real-life bug micro-mortems. Proving now more than ever, that for want of a nail, kingdoms can really be lost... Twitter: @blackbeard0x14e Cheers, Mahmoud Abdelghany

FOSDEM 2018, Free Java Dev Room, Talk Proposal: Packet Capturing with the JVM and Clojure - Yes, we can!
by Ruediger Gad 28 Nov '17

28 Nov '17

Hi, below, I send my talk proposal for the FOSDEM 2018 Free Java Dev Room: ----------------- Title: Packet Capturing with the JVM and Clojure - Yes, we can! Abstract: In this talk, it will be shown that packet capturing with the JVM and Clojure works fast, how it is made fast, and that Clojure and the JVM offer amazing capabilities for processing stream and batch data. Following a bottom-up approach, the covered topics include: - integration of low-level packet capturing with the JVM via JNI, - acceleration of packet capturing with the JVM up to the magnitude of 10 GBit/s speed, - a Domain Specific Language (DSL) for easing the extraction of information from raw binary data, - a self-adaptive mechanism for automatically adjusting data processing at run-time, - and using the Clojure-based DSL for improving the import of packet capturing data in Eclipse Trace Compass. The talk will provide an overview of the covered topics. More details were published in various peer-reviewed conferences and workshops, the speakers PhD thesis, and as Open Source Software (See, e.g.: https://ruedigergad.com/publications/) While this talk focuses on packet capturing, the presented topics can also be applied to other application domains. Recording me on audio and/or video: acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license (DEFAULT) Brief Bio: Ruediger Gad is a computer science and Open Source Software (OSS) enthusiast who was and still is involved in various OSS projects. He works as Project Manager R&D at Terma GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany in the field of space ground systems. He received a PhD degree (sobresaliente cum laude - best grade with honors) in computer science from the University of Cádiz, Spain, and regularly publishes his evaluation and research prototypes as OSS. He spoke at various academic conferences and workshops in scope of the technical program and in keynotes. His research interests include Event-Driven Architecture (EDA), Message-oriented Middleware (MoM), Complex Event Processing (CEP), computer networks, and software development and engineering. Microblog URL: https://twitter.com/ruedigergad Blog URL: https://ruedigergad.com/ Additional Notes: The talk is an adjusted and somewhat extended version of a talk already held at :clojureD 2017. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmkfifQMwT0 Slides: https://ruedigergad.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/presentation_ruediger_gad_c… The adjustments primarily concern the reduction of Clojure implementation details and the addition of the Clojure-based DSL packet capture data import for Eclipse Trace Compass. ----------------- If you have questions, comments, etc. please let me know. Thank you and cheers, Ruediger

Proposal: MethodHandles Everywhere!
by Charles Oliver Nutter 22 Nov '17

22 Nov '17

The MethodHandle API was added in Java 7, as a way to programmatically build up smart function pointers. Far more powerful than simple reflection, handles JIT and optimize like Java code, producing a fast, direct, type-safe callable. And the API has continued to evolve: in Java 9, you can now embed atomic semantics, array views, loops and "finally" logic, and much more. Come learn how flexible and useful MethodHandles can be! - Charlie

Talk Proposal: Opening the Oracle JDK features
by Matthew Gilliard 27 Oct '17

27 Oct '17

Thanks for reading :) Title: Opening the Oracle JDK Abstract: > We are going to open-source all of the features in the > Oracle JDK. There will be zero differences between the > OpenJDK and the Oracle JDK. - Mark Cavage, JavaOne keynote October 2017 This announcement by Mark got a big round of applause, but what does it actually mean? What are the commercial features and when will they be available? I'll talk through some of them, focusing mainly on those which are interesting and/or likely to be released soon. Speaker Bio: Matthew is a (somewhat) functional programmer who enjoys all kinds of language nerdery as well as whisky. He currently works on open-source code at Oracle, helping to make Java in the cloud as good as it can be. Past lives include OpenStacking, teaching English to highschoolers and a whole lot of Clojure and Java.

Talk proposal: JDK 9 TLS security enhancements in practice
by Martin Toshev 23 Oct '17

23 Oct '17

Title: JDK 9 TLS security enhancements in practice Abstract: The JDK has been kept up to date with latest releases of the SSL/TLS series of protocols by providing a blocking SSLSocket-based API and a non-blocking SSLEngine-based one. JDK 9 brings a lot of cool new TLS-related security enhancements such as DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security), ALPN TLS extension and OCSP stapling among others. In the session we will demonstrate them in a series of example use cases using a simple application server for the purpose. Bio: Martin is an IT consultant, Java enthusiast and a board member of the Bulgarian Java user group where he helps with the organization of the jPrime conference. His areas of interest include the wide range of Java-related technologies, messaging brokers (especially RabbitMQ for which he recently authored a book), software integration, cloud-based software architectures, security, relational and NoSQL databases. You can reach him for any Java and FOSS-related topics (especially Eclipse and the OpenJDK).

Talk proposal: Diagnosing Issues in Java Apps using Thermostat and Byteman.
by Severin Gehwolf 08 Feb '17

08 Feb '17

Title: Diagnosing Issues in Java Apps using Thermostat and Byteman. Abstract: Thermostat is a monitoring and management tool for Java deployments, allowing users to measure and monitor a host of different performance aspects of their Java applications. Available metrics range from raw CPU and memory usage to operation of the Garbage Collector and JIT compiler through to thread activity and method call/heap profiles. Thermostat provides a GUI view of activity of local and distributed JVMs in a live-view or, alternatively, offline for after-the-fact analysis. What Thermostat cannot do on its own is track events and record statistics that are specific to a given Java application, at least not unless the application co-operates with it, for example by publishing JMX statistics that Thermostat can read, persist and display in its GUI. However, that's about to change thanks to work Thermostat developers have been doing to integrate Byteman into Thermostat. Byteman is a tool which can be used to modify the behaviour of Java programs by injecting extra Java code almost anywhere in the program. You don't need to recompile your program or even prepare it in advance in order for this to work. You can specify changes to the program on the command line but, what is more amazing, you can actually use Byteman to change the way a program runs after startup while it is still running. In this talk we will show how Thermostat can collect and visualize metrics with Byteman's help in order to better understand a specific performance issue in a Java application. Bio: Severin Gehwolf is a Senior Software Engineer at Red Hat. He is part of Red Hat's OpenJDK team primarily working on JVM tooling. Severin is an upstream OpenJDK committer and is part of the Thermostat development team since 2012. Most recently, he has worked on Thermostat's Byteman plugin together with Andrew Dinn - the author of Byteman. Cheers, Severin
