FOSDEM 2027 devroom
by Sebastian Sumpf 25 Sep '26

25 Sep '26

Dear all, the call for participation for developer rooms has been online since last week [1]. Because the "Microkernel and Component-based OS" devroom has been organized in a revolving door manner since its inception, I would like to ask if anyone wants to propose and organize the devroom in 2027? Please let me know personally or send a reply to this list. In case you are undecided, we can most certainly support you. [1] https://fosdem.org/2027/news/call-for-devrooms/ Kind regards, Sebastian

[FOSDEM'26] Microkernel and Component-Based OS Devroom: Accepted talks & schedule
by Sebastian Sumpf 14 Dec '25

14 Dec '25

Hello all, we would like to thank everyone for their proposals to the developer room. This year we received 18 submissions. However, the time constraint of half a day forced us to limit the number of accepted talks to 8. In case your talk was not accepted, consider joining the devroom as a visitor and please do not hesitate to apply for next year's edition of FOSDEM. To make the selection process fair and unbiased, we asked several people from our community to rank and rate the submitted proposals and hereby thank them for their reviews. The Microkernel and Component-Based OS Devroom will take place on Feb. 1, 2026 at ULB in room K.4.201. The tentative schedule follows (Brussels time / CET): 13:15-13:45 Making the NOVA microhypervisor fit for thousands of devices and interrupts 13:45-14:15 skiftOS: Building a microkernel-based operating system from the ground up 14:15-14:45 Rethinking CPU scheduling for dynamic workloads on Sculpt OS 14:45-15:10 Capability Based Security in Redox 15:10-15:35 Transactions: Making CMRX kernel internals lock-free 15:25-16:00 Practical Persistence on Microkernels (ft. PhantomOS) 16:00-16:30 Updates on GNU/Hurd progress: rump drivers, 64bit, SMP, software bootstrapping ... 16:30-17:00 Microkernels: The last 15 years in retrospective We divided the devroom time into 25 and 30 minutes slots. Please limit your speaking time to 20 and 25 minutes respectively to make room for Q&A and switch over. Also confirm your attendance in pretalx and check if your assigned time slot works. Please notify us ASAP if you have a scheduling conflict. Once your talk shows up on the devroom website at https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/track/microkernel you are good to go. We are looking forward to see you at FOSDEM, Sebastian & Josef

[FOSDEM'26] Call for Participation: Microkernel and Component-Based OS Devroom
by Sebastian Sumpf 03 Nov '25

03 Nov '25

We are happy to announce the CfP for the "Microkernel and Component-Based OS" devroom at the upcoming FOSDEM 2026. Developers and users of various free and open-source microkernel-based and component-based operating systems will meet again at FOSDEM during the weekend of January 31st and February 1st 2026 and will share a developer room. The Microkernel and Component-Based OS devroom is currently looking for your participation in the form of proposals for talks, demos and other related activities. Possible topics for the devroom include, but are not limited to: * Introduction of a specific OS or framework * Design of subsystems and the general architecture of an OS * Languages, tools and toolchains used * Enabling support for hardware architectures, devices and programming languages * Development processes, debugging * Maintenance, testing and release engineering * Safety, security and robustness * Trends and challenges * Research and open questions * Community and governance * Use cases, experiences and status updates * Best practices and lessons learned * Live demos Important Dates The deadline for submitting proposals is December 1, 2025 (23:55 CET). Please use the FOSDEM website at https://fosdem.org/submit, select the track "Microkernel and Component-Based OS" and include at least the following information: * Title of your proposal * Short abstract (one or two paragraphs) * Duration (20 - 30 minutes, including demos and Q&A) * Your full name * Your short bio The devroom schedule (with accepted talks) will be announced on the devroom website at https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/track/microkernel by December 15, 2025. The schedule will also be posted to the devroom mailing list and the speakers will be notified via email. Like previous years, the devroom will take place as an in-person event at the ULB Campus Solbosch in Brussels, Belgium during the second half of February 1, 2026 (Sunday). Due to the high number of submissions that FOSDEM received again this year, our devroom has only been allocated half a day. Therefore, the final decision on the duration of the talks will be made by the devroom organizers based on the number of accepted proposals. Given these restrictions, eight to nine half hour slots with a speaking time of 20 to 25 minutes and 5 to 10 minutes of Q&A form the upper limit. Requirements The communication language of the devroom is English. All content must relate to free and open-source software. By participating in the event, you agree to the publication of your talk recordings, slides and other content provided under the same CC-BY license as all other FOSDEM content. All participants are expected to adhere to the Code of Conduct: https://fosdem.org/2026/practical/conduct/ Contact For the 2026 edition, the organizers of the devroom are * Sebastian Sumpf (sebastian.sumpf [at] genode-labs.com) * Josef Söntgen (josef.soentgen [at] genode-labs.com) For any comments, questions and suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us directly or via microkernel-devroom-manager at fosdem.org. Announcements and inquiries are additionally available through the devroom mailing list https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/microkernel-devroom About the Devroom Since the first Microkernel OS Devroom at FOSDEM 2012, this devroom has been a part of each subsequent FOSDEM (with slight variations of the name). The focus gradually widened to include component-based and other operating systems. It has now become somewhat of a tradition for the open-source operating systems community, a kind of "extended family meeting" and it is one of the very few places where microkernel and operating-system enthusiasts meet regularly. To date, over two dozen projects have participated in one way or another. Many of the projects face similar challenges but come up with partially different solutions. Therefore, the goal of the devroom is to bring the various projects together, let them exchange ideas, cross-pollinate and socialize. As in the past, the devroom will offer the stage both to established community members and to newcomers. Our goal is to select talks in an inclusive manner and to create a balanced and unbiased schedule, while keeping the quality of the devroom as high as in previous years. About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a two-day conference organized by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open-source software. FOSDEM is widely recognized as one of the largest and best such events worldwide. FOSDEM covers a wide spectrum of free and open-source software and hardware projects and offers a platform for people to collaborate. To this end, FOSDEM has set up developer rooms (devrooms) where teams can meet and showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack and publicly present new ideas, latest results, lightning talks, news and proposals. Besides developer rooms, FOSDEM also offers main tracks, lightning talks, certification exams and project stands. In recent years, FOSDEM has been hosting more than 5000 developers annually at the ULB Solbosch Campus in Brussels, Belgium. The participation in FOSDEM is totally free and requires no registration, although the organizers gratefully accept donations and sponsorship. Devroom Dinner Over the years, it has become a tradition that devroom speakers and enthusiasts meet for dinner somewhere in Brussels after the event to continue discussions, socialize and meet old and new friends. We plan to follow that tradition in some form as well in 2026 and will inform you about the exact arrangements later. Hope to see all of you in Brussels!

[FOSDEM 2026] Microkernel and Component-based OS devroom
by Sebastian Sumpf 29 Sep '25

29 Sep '25

Dear Microkernel community, as the deadline for this years devroom proposals nears, the Genode project would like to offer to take care of the organizational side of the 2026 Microkernel devroom. Because of the limited schedule time (half a day) and the growing number of proposals during the past few years, there will be a change in 2026 for Unikernel projects where an additional Unikernel devroom will be proposed in the hope to make more room for talks. Nevertheless, I would like to thank the Unikernel community for the great collaboration during the past few years. If there are no objections, I will submit a devroom proposal during the next few weeks. Kind regards, Sebastian -- Sebastian Sumpf Genode Labs http://www.genode-labs.com · http://genode.org Genode Labs GmbH · Amtsgericht Dresden · HRB 28424 · Sitz Dresden Geschäftsführer: Dr.-Ing. [FOSDEM]: Video Review
by Udo Steinberg 04 Feb '25

04 Feb '25

Hi all, there appear to be some problems with the video editing system resulting from disk space issues. Please do not final-approve your video and instead keep reporting all problems to the FOSDEM video team until your talk - starts and ends at the correct time - is not missing any content in the middle A good sanity check is to check the entire duration of the video, which should be pretty close to your slot length (20 or 25 minutes). Cheers, Udo

[FOSDEM]: Microkernel Devroom Speaker Information
by Udo Steinberg 29 Jan '25

29 Jan '25

Hi all, I hope everyone is ready for this year's microkernel devroom and putting together a great presentation. Please let us know immediately, if for some reason you cannot give your talk as planned. Below is some general information to make things go smoothly: 1) Please try to upload your final slides in PDF format to pretalx well before your talk begins, unless you have some gimmick in there that you don't want the audience to see before. Once the slides are linked on the devroom website, people watching the FOSDEM live stream from afar will be able to look at the slides offline and follow your talk better. 2) History has shown that a laptop with HDMI connector works best for interfacing with the FOSDEM projection and slide-capturing system. If your laptop has something else, then don't forget to bring a whatever-to-HDMI converter that works. Also bring a clicker/pointer if you need one. 3) We will use the 5 minutes in between talks to let the audience leave or enter the room. Within these 5 minutes, the next speaker should get their laptop connected, obtain the mic from the previous speaker and get ready to start on time. If you don't participate in the developer room for its entire duration, then please be in the room at least 5 minutes before your talk is scheduled to begin. 4) We will signal each speaker 5 minutes and 2 minutes before the end of your talk. The latter is a strong hint from the scheduler that you should wrap up your talk with some Q&A, before a timer interrupt preempts you. 5) There is a Matrix chatroom for our devroom. You should have gotten an invitation from the system to join that chatroom. You might get questions from the audience and remote participants in that chatroom, especially if you did not leave much time for Q&A. It would be great if you answer those questions in the chatroom after your talk. Finally, have a look at the speaker manual: https://fosdem.org/2025/manuals/program/speaker/ Please let us know if you have any further questions. Looking forward to a great devroom and seeing everyone in Brussels soon! Cheers, Udo & Alexander

[FOSDEM] 2025 Schedule: Microkernel and Component-Based OS Devroom
by Udo Steinberg 09 Dec '24

09 Dec '24

Hi all, below you can find the (tentative) schedule for the 2025 edition of the FOSDEM "Microkernel and Component-Based OS" devroom, which will begin at 15:00 CET on Feb 1, 2025 in ULB room UB4.136. First, we would like to thank everyone who submitted a talk proposal. We are quite happy to have received 17 submissions this year. Unfortunately, the FOSDEM organizers were unable to expand our developer room back to a full day, so we could only fit 9 of those talks into our half-day slot. To make the selection process fair and unbiased, we asked several highly technical people from our community to rank and rate the submitted proposals. We would like to thank Norman Feske (Genode), Adam Lackorzynski (Kernkonzept) and Julian Stecklina (Cyberus) to help Alexander and me make the choice. The tentative schedule is as follows (Brussels time / CET): 15:00-15:05 Welcome to the Microkernel and Component-Based OS Devroom 15:05-15:25 HelenOS: 20 years of past history, 20 years of future vision 15:30-15:55 Celebrating kernel diversity with Genode 16:00-16:20 MACHINA: Lessons and Insights from Reimplementing the Mach Microkernel 16:25-16:45 CMRX: Microkernel-based RTOS with memory isolation on MMU-less architectures 16:50-17:15 Obtaining Safety & Security Certifications for L4Re 17:20-17:45 A Formal Specification of the NOVA Microhypervisor 17:50-18:10 Cancelling POSIX syscalls in Managarm - an asynchronous microkernel-based OS 18:15-18:35 POSIX Signals in User Space on the Redox Microkernel 18:40-19:00 Trusted boot with the Genode OS Framework For those of you whose talk was accepted: Congratulations! Please confirm your attendance in pretalx and check if your assigned time slot works. Please notify me ASAP if you have a scheduling conflict and put the time slots that work for you into pretalx. Once your talk shows up on the devroom website at https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/track/microkernel/ you are good to go. Since the schedule is so tight, we will do strict preemptive scheduling of time slots. There are 5 minutes in between talks to allow the audience to enter and leave the room. The next speaker should use that time to set up their laptop. The previous speaker could use that time to answer some more questions, but don't count on that too much, because there will be noise. For those of you whose talk was not accepted: Sorry that we could not fit you into the schedule this time, but please try again next year. For this year, we are keeping you on a waiting list in case a talk mentioned above cannot happen. Cheers, Udo & Alexander
