[Microkernel-devroom] [Talk-Proposal] Rathaxes - A DSL for device driver development, why and how?
by Louis Opter 08 Dec '12

08 Dec '12

Hello, Our turn to check in! First things first: - title of your talk: A DSL for device driver development, why and how? - your full name: Rathaxes; - duration of your talk: 30 minutes, without questions. Our abstract: Device drivers are notoriously known to be a critical and prominent part of modern operating systems. We will draw up a summary of the current state of the art in device driver development: tools, methodologies and approaches which try to mitigate the problem. Then, we will present our take on it: a domain specific language with its own aspect-oriented programming paradigm, and its compiler, Rathaxes. We will show you interesting details of an implementation, in the Rathaxes DSL, of the e1000 ethernet driver for Linux. We will conclude with how Rathaxes fits into the current state of the art, our vision, and next steps. And that's it! If you have any question, please let me know. We are also hanging out on freenode in the #rathaxes channel. Our homepage is: http://www.rathaxes.org/. Best -- Louis Opter

Hello. I would like to discuss my ideas for FOSDEM'13 uKernel devroom with you. We are a small Russian RnD company, and we try to apply uKernel based research in our Secure Devices. The main idea of my presentation - our experience in uKernel applying. That will be retrospective view on previous year. This is brief structure of my presentation: * Small Info. ksys labs - We are a small Russian RnD company and we use uKernel in our products. * our first uKernel implementation - long story of small project - our trusted screen based on OMAP3: L4Linux, looks good but absolutely unusable (Problem with device support) our L4Linux with omap3 OTG support L4Linux + L4re + Dope (ugly look and hard to make GUI) L4Linux + L4re + qt (failed port) L4Linux + L4Re + Disko GUI (prototype with rich functional) Omap4 + Genode + QT * Other problems: Small number of developers, small community, etc. 1-2 times per year Fiasco.OC is released Huge time gap between publications and real application of the results Systems Summer School'12 - our new experience * Our contribution: Our L4Linux fork L4Re software (openssl, Disko GUI, drivers, etc) Our small Genode contribution * Next year hardened Fiasco.OC ppc'32 based network platform I'm interested in show room (demo slot) with real devices, but i'm not sure that we will have nice looking prototypes at the time of FOSDEM. We have imx53 board with Genode and several different omap3 based sticks. I will try to find something interesting for examples. * title of your talk (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) Microkernels and You - long path of the small project. * your full name (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) Sartakov A. Vasily * a short abstract ksys labs - small enterprise involved in research and development in area of Information security. Experimental microkernel is a good base for secure devices, but it is hard to use. Our experience in applying, development, our ideas and wishes are main subjects of the presentation. * duration of your talk (please, no longer than 45 minutes) 20-25 minutes. -- Sartakov A. Vasily

[Microkernel-devroom] [TALK-PROPOSAL] Reaching puberty - How Genode is becoming a general-purpose OS
by Norman Feske 05 Dec '12

05 Dec '12

Hello, it's amazing how lively this list has become in the last couple of days. So here is my proposal for Genode's contribution to the dev room: :-) * title of your talk (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) Reaching puberty - How Genode is becoming a general-purpose OS * your full name (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) Norman Feske, Genode Labs * a short abstract The Genode OS Framework is a tool kit for composing special-purpose OSes out of a growing number of ready-to-use components such as device drivers, protocol stacks, runtimes, and in particular microkernels. One year ago, we declared our goal to bring the framework to a level where its developers can use it as day-to-day OS. The talk will briefly introduce the fundamental ideas behind Genode's architecture followed by the presentation of the corner-stone for pursuing our goal to run GNU on Genode, namely the Noux runtime environment. Growing up is not easy. Hence, the second part of the presentation will be an experience report on the challenges we encountered at various levels of the software stack and the ways of how we overcame them. * duration of your talk 45 min Best regards Norman

[Microkernel-devroom] TUD:OS talk proposal
by Björn Döbel 05 Dec '12

05 Dec '12

Hi all, I'd like to propose a talk for the microkernel devroom at FOSDEM. > title of your talk (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) Romain: OS Support for Replicating Binary Applications > your full name (will be printed in the FOSDEM booklet) Björn Döbel > a short abstract Operating systems research in fault tolerance has mainly focussed on dealing with faulty software, while resilience against transient hardware errors has been dealt with mostly by applying compiler techniques or using RAD-hardened hardware components. L4Re's Romain replication framework allows to replicate binary user applications on top of the Fiasco.OC microkernel. Replicas are run independently without modifications and are validated whenever they perform externalization events, such as system calls. In the talk I'm going to introduce Romain's architecture and discuss issues we had to deal with regarding replication of multithreaded applications in a capability-based system. > duration of your talk (please, no longer than 45 minutes) 30-40 min

[Microkernel-devroom] Thanks
by Jakub Jermar 15 Feb '12

15 Feb '12

Just wanted to thank everybody once more for visiting our devroom. I'd also like to especially thank all the speakers and panelists. Last, but not least, a big thank you belongs to the FOSDEM organizers. For archiving reasons, it would be cool if the speakers submitted their slides/images to this mailing list so that they can be uploaded to some central download web page. Jakub

Hi! On Thu, 12 Jan 2012 14:23:44 +0100, Jakub Jermar <jakub(a)jermar.eu> wrote: > However, it would be nice if GNU Hurd participated in the devroom > anyway, especially in the Panel (or whatever) discussion which will be > held at the very end of the devroom. In then end, I won't be able to attend: too much ``real-life stuff'', so I didn't manage to schedule any amount of time lately for GNU Hurd that would be worth mentioning... This is a pity, as you have put together a really nice agenda! (Congratulations, and thanks again for stepping up!) I hope that Olaf will be able to represent us, at least. Are there any plans to record the talks? Grüße, Thomas

[Microkernel-devroom] Talk proposal: The agony of choice
by Stefan Kalkowski 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

Hi folks, I know I definitely missed the deadline, but I've heard you're still looking for another talk for the next-to-last slot? I would like to propose a 30-45min talk about the following topic: [title] The agony of choice - the diversity of microkernels in Genode [name] Stefan Kalkowski [abstract] One shiny aspect of the Genode OS framework is its diversity with respect to microkernels and hardware platforms it's running on top of. Although primarily of interest to clients and users, this property provides some hidden benefits to the system-developer itself. This talk is basically an experience report. It will give you an insight into the benefits and troubles of developing on a diverse biotope, the strength and weaknesses of the available platforms, how Genode gets ported to a kernel, and what is basically necessary from the kernel's perspective to drive Genode. The last point will be illustrated by introducing recent developments of a hybrid kernel/user API in Genode. [short bio] Stefan Kalkowski has been working with the Genode OS framework since it's first beginnings. His diploma thesis is based on the first version of it (at that time it was labeled 'Bastei'). Since then, he became a Genode-enthusiast. Before joining Genode Labs as an employee about two and a half years ago, he was working for two years at the Operating Systems Group of TU Dresden as a PhD student.
