Talk proposal: Fix your Java code with Kotlin
by Christophe Beyls 11 Dec '18

11 Dec '18

Hello, Here is a talk proposal for the Java Devroom 2019. Title: Fix your Java code with Kotlin Abstract: The Kotlin programming language gained a lot of popularity lately in the Java community. It is in spirit a true successor to Java, designed to make the life of developers easier. Instead of focusing on shiny new features, this talk will try to demonstrate how Kotlin handles common programming patterns in a safer and more elegant way compared to Java. We'll discuss null safety, automatic casting, immutability, variance and more. Kotlin is an open source project developed by JetBrains with a very active community, and one of the fastest evolving languages running on the JVM. Talk proposal: Multi-Release JARs - How to build them?
by Uwe Schindler 09 Dec '18

09 Dec '18

Title: Multi-Release JARs - How to build them? Abstract: Multi-Release JARs are a cool new feature that came with Java 9, but explicit support to create them was completely missing in any of the available build tools outside of the JDK. Currently users are on their own: You need to have separate build trees with lots of code duplication, you need multiple JVMs during building, and finally you have to use a custom Maven, Gradle, or Ant tasks to package your JAR file. This talk will give an overview about Multi-Release JARs and how to handle them in your build tool. Finally, it will show a cool "alternative" that is used in Apache Lucene to link the search engine to some of the new Java 9+ highly optimized static methods for bounds checking or array comparisons. Time: Short Speaker: Uwe Schindler Twitter: @thetaph1 Blog: blog.thetaphi.de Website: www.thetaphi.de Recording me on audio and/or video: Acceptable under any CC-BY license Bio: Uwe is committer and PMC member of Apache Lucene and Solr. His main focus is on development of Lucene Java. He implemented fast numerical search and is maintaining the new attribute-based text analysis API. He studied Physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and works as managing director for SD DataSolutions GmbH in Bremen, Germany, a company that provides consulting and support for Apache Lucene, Elasticsearch, and Apache Solr. He also works for “PANGAEA – Publishing Network for Geoscientific & Environmental Data” where he implemented the portal's geo-spatial retrieval functions with Lucene Java. Uwe had talks about Lucene at various international conferences like the previous FOSDEM, Berlin Buzzwords, ApacheCon EU/US, Lucene Revolution, Lucene Eurocon, and various local meetups. Remark: I had this talk proposed last year, but it was not accepted due to high volume. Maybe this year. It's still very actual, because the tools to build MR-JARs are rare. This is a totally different approach. Elasticsearch will also use it soon, in addition to the conventional approach with 2 source trees. ----- Uwe Schindler uschindler(a)apache.org ASF Member, Apache Lucene PMC / Committer Bremen, Germany http://lucene.apache.org/

FOSDEM proposal: Learning about Deep Learning: Applications for OpenJDK/Java Verification
by Shelley Lambert 09 Dec '18

09 Dec '18

In this talk, we identify some well-known software verification problems, using real-world examples from open-source projects and see how we might apply some deep learning principles to address them. In the various points where we may test the Java runtime, we find candidates for deep learning. What is required? We need a problem to solve, a model that describes it, and a large amount of data to feed the neural network. We will step through a simple example of where and how to apply deep learning to more effectively test Java runtimes. By covering the basics of deep learning and the simple example, the intent of this presentation is to spark curiosity and generate ideas on future applications of this machine learning approach to problem-solving. Recording: acceptable under CC-BY-2.0 license Speaker Bio: Shelley Lambert is the Test Lead for IBM Runtime Technologies team. She and her team test open and freely available JDK implementations and have delivered the test strategy, test code base, and test frameworks into the Eclipse OMR, Eclipse OpenJ9 and AdoptOpenJDK projects. She is a committer at OpenJ9 and AdoptOpenJDK and draws stories and lessons from her experiences in the open projects where she is most active. Blog URL: https://8thdaytesting.com/

Talk proposal: Java with Docker: How to Make it Work
by Adam Farley8 06 Dec '18

06 Dec '18

Title: Java with Docker: How to Make it Work Abstract: Ever tried developing Java applications in containers? Of course not. You're a sensible person. >From a small footprint to a super-fast spin-up time, the reality of containers is a far cry from the reality of an OpenJDK binary execution. So how do we bring these two disparate visions closer together? Simple! We jlink the required JDK modules to generate a smaller footprint, then leverage alternate JVMs for performant startup! I promise, the reality is simpler than that sentence. :) Drop by and see what I mean. Recording: Sure. Title: AdoptOpenJDK: Your One-Stop-Shop for OpenJDK Binaries Abstract: It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a modern CI build farm for churning out quality-checked OpenJDK binaries! Come and learn how this new community project produces OpenJDK binaries every day; where all versions, platforms, and variants are built, tested, and uploaded to a deployment-ready repository overnight. Want Java 10 with OpenJ9 on AIX or maybe Java 8 with HotSpot on macOS? AdoptOpenJDK can help! In a nutshell: this session covers the origins of AdoptOpenJDK, how the build pipeline works, and how we resolved some common CI problems. Come for the talk, stay for the jelly babies. Talk proposal: Call a getter faster with reflection, MethodHandles or LamdbaMetaFactory (plain text version)
by Geoffrey De Smet 03 Dec '18

03 Dec '18

[My apologies for the duplication, the first mail when out in html instead of as plain text] Hi all, I'd like to submit this talk for fosdem 2019: Title: Call a getter faster with reflection, MethodHandles or LamdbaMetaFactory Abstract: What is the fastest way to read a getter from a Java class without knowing the class at compilation time? Java frameworks often do this. A lot. And it can directly influence their performance. So I’ve benchmarked different approaches, such as reflection, method handles, LamdbaMetaFactory and code generation. Recently I updated them for JDK 11. Especially MethodHandles have an interesting catch 22 situation, which I'll explain during the presentation. Talk Proposal: srcdeps: Don't let dependencies dictate your life!
by Peter Palaga 03 Dec '18

03 Dec '18

Hi *, my submission: = srcdeps: Don't let dependencies dictate your life! == Abstract Your dependency does not merge or release your fix fast enough? Or you want a reliable continuous integration with your framework/platform? Then stop waiting for releases and start using source dependencies with Maven & Gradle! srcdeps brings the concept of source dependencies as known in Ruby’s blunder or Scala’s sbt to the field of Java and its build tools. With srcdeps, a Maven or a Gradle project can define its dependencies in terms of specific source commits that are built by srcdeps "on the fly" when they are requested. We will explain how this can save time in testing and integration or how it allows to fix third-party code. In a short live demo, we will show how to switch from a released dependency to a source dependency in a Maven project. == Note for the organizers This is a shortened version of a talk I already presented on a few conferences. Here are the slides of the full version: http://ppalaga.github.io/presentations/181011-jcon-duesseldorf/index.html#/ == Recording Yes, I accept recording me on audio and/or video under a CC-BY-2.0 license == Bio Senior engineer for JBoss Fuse at Red Hat. Earlier worked on JBoss EAP, Hawkular and other Red Hat Middleware projects. The author of srcdeps and contributor to several Maven and Gradle plugins. == URLs https://twitter.com/ppalaga http://ppalaga.github.io

Talk Proposal: ~1 sec. Kubernetes redeployments with Camel K
by Peter Palaga 03 Dec '18

03 Dec '18

Hi *, my submission: = ~1 sec. Kubernetes redeployments with Camel K == Abstract Interested in seeing your Camel application redeployed on Kubernetes ~1 second after you have changed your Java code? Camel K is a new subproject of Apache Camel that aims at simplifying and speeding up the development process. In this talk we will present a few tricks that helped us to achieve that: custom Kubernetes Operator, custom Kubernetes resources, reuse of build images based on the set of dependencies and use of a ConfigMap to mount the changing bits to a container. We'll explain the underlying concepts and run a live demo! == Recording Yes, I accept recording me on audio and/or video under a CC-BY-2.0 license == Bio Senior engineer for JBoss Fuse/WildFly Camel at Red Hat. Earlier worked on JBoss EAP, Hawkular and other Red Hat Middleware projects.
