Talk Proposal: OpenJDK GCs of Today and Tomorrow
by Roman Kennke 12 Dec '18

12 Dec '18

Title: OpenJDK GCs of Today and Tomorrow Abstract: This talk intends to show a brief overview of the recent improvements in OpenJDK GCs, what are the problems modern GCs are trying to solve, and what are the challenges ahead. For example, the need for more concurrent GCs with compaction; the need for runtime support for concurrent reference processing and class unloading; the need for more efficient GCs, even when they fail; the need for GCs that can target denser memory footprint scenarios, etc. On top, the practical engineering concerns how to fit all that in a single JVM, multiple backends and compilers. Recording: Ok Speaker Bio: Roman Kennke is Prinipal Software Engineer at Red Hat, where he worked and works on OpenJDK and several related projects, including Thermostat, the Zero and Shark ports of OpenJDK, and currently on the Shenandoah Garbage Collector. Talk Proposal: A walkthrough guide to implementing a compiler intrinsic
by Andrew Dinn 12 Dec '18

12 Dec '18

Title: A walkthrough guide to implementing a compiler intrinsic Preferred time: 25 minutes Abstract: One of the ways Java achieves high performance is to provide a route for accelerated, hand-crafted compilation of certain critical methods via the JIT. This optimization path is available both for native methods implemented as callouts to C code and for methods that are defined in Java. In both cases the method needs to be flagged as a HotspotIntrinsic and provided with a JITted code implementation. The intrinsic implementation defines the hand-crafted definition of as a high-level intermediate representation (IR) graph for the C2 JIT. This means it can be inlined into the IR graph for caller methods, providing even greater opportunities for optimization. This talk will demonstrate how to implement an intrinsic by walking through a specific real-life example that is currently under review as a JEP candidate. It will start by motivating the need for the intrinsic and defining the candidate as a Java method which relies on an underlying native implementation. It will then show how the candidate can be replaced with an intrinsic implementation, working through the changes required in the VM, the JIT compiler front and back end and, ultimately, the assemblers for x86 and AArch64. The Missing Benchmark Metric: Memory Consumption
by Jens Wilke 12 Dec '18

12 Dec '18

Title: The Missing Benchmark Metric: Memory Consumption Abstract: When doing benchmarks we are usually interested in comparing the throughput of different solutions. However, when the code under investigation is not trivial, memory consumption may vary significantly, because using more memory to achieve better throughput is a typical design trade off. The talk discusses what memory metrics are more or less meaningful and what approaches can be used to track memory consumption alongside JMH benchmarks. A special focus will be given on dynamic effects on the interaction with the garbage collector and whether it is possible to get some stable benchmark results. Time: Short Speaker: Jens Wilke Twitter: @cruftex Blog: cruftex.net Bio: A coding veteran and part time entrepreneur. Since 2000 he architects, builds and runs Java based eCommerce applications. Besides that, Jens has a broad industry experience and worked integration problems for SMEs but also helped building high availability infrastructures for fortune 500 companies. Jens is fanatic about performance. For Jens improving application performance is the key to reduce latency and provide a great User Experience. On the other hand, Jens also likes to improve the performance and happiness of teams. As a trained Srum Master, Jens has facilitated teams and companies in their agile adoption. Recording me on audio and/or video: Acceptable under any CC-BY license Remark: The talk is based on a blog article which was well received in the Java performance community. I'll plan to present some updated results for the latest JVM and GC implementation. Talk proposal: Fix your Java code with Kotlin
by Christophe Beyls 11 Dec '18

11 Dec '18

Hello, Here is a talk proposal for the Java Devroom 2019. Title: Fix your Java code with Kotlin Abstract: The Kotlin programming language gained a lot of popularity lately in the Java community. It is in spirit a true successor to Java, designed to make the life of developers easier. Instead of focusing on shiny new features, this talk will try to demonstrate how Kotlin handles common programming patterns in a safer and more elegant way compared to Java. We'll discuss null safety, automatic casting, immutability, variance and more. Kotlin is an open source project developed by JetBrains with a very active community, and one of the fastest evolving languages running on the JVM. Recording me on audio and/or video: is acceptable une a CC-BY-2.0 license. Brief Bio: Christophe Beyls is a freelance mobile developer from Brussels, who created and maintains the FOSDEM Companion app for Android. Blog URL: https://medium.com/@BladeCoder/latest

Talk proposal: Multi-Release JARs - How to build them?
by Uwe Schindler 09 Dec '18

09 Dec '18

Title: Multi-Release JARs - How to build them? Abstract: Multi-Release JARs are a cool new feature that came with Java 9, but explicit support to create them was completely missing in any of the available build tools outside of the JDK. Currently users are on their own: You need to have separate build trees with lots of code duplication, you need multiple JVMs during building, and finally you have to use a custom Maven, Gradle, or Ant tasks to package your JAR file. This talk will give an overview about Multi-Release JARs and how to handle them in your build tool. Finally, it will show a cool "alternative" that is used in Apache Lucene to link the search engine to some of the new Java 9+ highly optimized static methods for bounds checking or array comparisons. Time: Short Speaker: Uwe Schindler Twitter: @thetaph1 Blog: blog.thetaphi.de Website: www.thetaphi.de Recording me on audio and/or video: Acceptable under any CC-BY license Bio: Uwe is committer and PMC member of Apache Lucene and Solr. His main focus is on development of Lucene Java. He implemented fast numerical search and is maintaining the new attribute-based text analysis API. He studied Physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and works as managing director for SD DataSolutions GmbH in Bremen, Germany, a company that provides consulting and support for Apache Lucene, Elasticsearch, and Apache Solr. He also works for “PANGAEA – Publishing Network for Geoscientific & Environmental Data” where he implemented the portal's geo-spatial retrieval functions with Lucene Java. Uwe had talks about Lucene at various international conferences like the previous FOSDEM, Berlin Buzzwords, ApacheCon EU/US, Lucene Revolution, Lucene Eurocon, and various local meetups. Remark: I had this talk proposed last year, but it was not accepted due to high volume. Maybe this year. It's still very actual, because the tools to build MR-JARs are rare. This is a totally different approach. Elasticsearch will also use it soon, in addition to the conventional approach with 2 source trees. ----- Uwe Schindler uschindler(a)apache.org ASF Member, Apache Lucene PMC / Committer Bremen, Germany http://lucene.apache.org/

FOSDEM proposal: Learning about Deep Learning: Applications for OpenJDK/Java Verification
by Shelley Lambert 09 Dec '18

09 Dec '18

In this talk, we identify some well-known software verification problems, using real-world examples from open-source projects and see how we might apply some deep learning principles to address them. In the various points where we may test the Java runtime, we find candidates for deep learning. What is required? We need a problem to solve, a model that describes it, and a large amount of data to feed the neural network. We will step through a simple example of where and how to apply deep learning to more effectively test Java runtimes. By covering the basics of deep learning and the simple example, the intent of this presentation is to spark curiosity and generate ideas on future applications of this machine learning approach to problem-solving. Recording: acceptable under CC-BY-2.0 license Speaker Bio: Shelley Lambert is the Test Lead for IBM Runtime Technologies team. She and her team test open and freely available JDK implementations and have delivered the test strategy, test code base, and test frameworks into the Eclipse OMR, Eclipse OpenJ9 and AdoptOpenJDK projects. She is a committer at OpenJ9 and AdoptOpenJDK and draws stories and lessons from her experiences in the open projects where she is most active. Blog URL: https://8thdaytesting.com/

Talk proposal: Java with Docker: How to Make it Work
by Adam Farley8 06 Dec '18

06 Dec '18

Title: Java with Docker: How to Make it Work Abstract: Ever tried developing Java applications in containers? Of course not. You're a sensible person. >From a small footprint to a super-fast spin-up time, the reality of containers is a far cry from the reality of an OpenJDK binary execution. So how do we bring these two disparate visions closer together? Simple! We jlink the required JDK modules to generate a smaller footprint, then leverage alternate JVMs for performant startup! I promise, the reality is simpler than that sentence. :) Drop by and see what I mean. Recording: Sure.
