Title: Project Loom: Advanced concurrency for fun and profit Abstract: Project Loom, an OpenJDK project, is "intended to explore, incubate and deliver Java VM features and APIs built on top of them for the purpose of supporting easy-to-use, high-throughput lightweight concurrency and new programming models on the Java platform." These feature include Lightweight Threads, delimited continuations, and tail-call elimination. The speaker, a Project Loom team member, will describe the project in depth, in particular the gnarly details of how coroutine and continuation scheduling mechanism works, and a new feature, Scoped Locals. Recording me on audio and/or video: I'm cool with that. Bio: Andrew Haley is a Distinguished Engineer at Red Hat. He leads the Java team there, the OpenJDK 8 and 11 Updates projects and was a co-author of the 64-bit OpenJDK ARM port. -- Andrew Haley (he/him) Java Platform Lead Engineer Red Hat UK Ltd. <https://www.redhat.com> https://keybase.io/andrewhaley EAC8 43EB D3EF DB98 CC77 2FAD A5CD 6035 332F A671

Java War Room - Talk Proposal
by Stephen Chin 29 Oct '19

29 Oct '19

* Title * The Java War Room - Planning 50 Years of Java * Abstract (at least two paragraphs) * The Java language will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. It has also kept the crown of most popular language for the past 5 consecutive years. Billions of devices run Java globally ranging from Blu-Ray players to mobile phones to Java cards. But it is too early to celebrate victory! The unwashed masses are conspiring to destroy well typed Java code with unmaintainable scripts built using prototype clones. They are assaulting the core fundamentals of our object orientation by disrupting parametric polymorphism. If we let them launch deadly preprocessor directives no code will be safe from this polymorphic invasion! This presentation will delve into well researched statistics on industry usage of programming languages, emerging trends and their impact on language suitability, and effects of cloud computing on language adoption. War humor aside, the goal is to frame strategic discussions about how Java remains the most widely used language at its 50th anniversary. * Recording me on audio and/or video * acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/] license (DEFAULT) * Brief Bio * Stephen Chin is Senior Director of Developer Relations at JFrog and author of The Definitive Guide to Modern Client Development, Raspberry Pi with Java, and Pro JavaFX Platform. He has keynoted numerous Java conferences around the world including Devoxx, JNation, JavaOne, Joker, and Open Source India. Stephen is an avid motorcyclist who has done evangelism tours in Europe, Japan, and Brazil, interviewing hackers in their natural habitat. When he is not traveling, he enjoys teaching kids how to do embedded and robot programming together with his teenage daughter. * Microblog URL * http://twitter.com/steveonjava * Blog URL * http://steveonjava.com/ Cheers, --Steve

[IMPORTANT] Projector and slides information, please read
by Mario Torre 31 Jan '19

31 Jan '19

Hi, There's some change this year that I think it's important to share to everyone attending. This year the projector will accept HDMI input, so please don't forget to bring an HDMI adaptor if you hope to present from a laptop that only has a different type of output connector! We also recommend bringing a spare copy of any slides on a USB stick if possible. OpenJDK Committers’ Workshop, 4 February 2019
by mark.reinhold＠oracle.com 28 Jan '19

28 Jan '19

OpenJDK Committers and other regular contributors traditionally meet each February, in the Free Java dev room at FOSDEM in Brussels. The Free Java room runs for just one day, however, so there’s not a lot of time for the focused discussions amongst OpenJDK contributors that many of us enjoyed at the first Workshop in Santa Clara, California last August. We therefore plan to hold a one-day OpenJDK Committers’ Workshop on Monday, 4 February, the day after FOSDEM. We’ll run the entire day as an unconference, with plenty of time to discuss both technical and community issues. The Workshop will take place at Oracle’s Belgium office, Medialaan 50/A, 1800 Vilvoorde, Belgium. Vilvoorde is about 6 miles (10 km) from central Brussels, and reachable from there by both car and mass transit. We’ll start at 10am and finish by 6pm. Food will not be provided, but there are restaurants nearby for lunch. There will be no fee to attend but space will be limited, due to the size of the venue, so we ask that you register in advance. As at the first Workshop, preference will be given to Committers with a strong record of past contributions, though some space will be made for new Committers who have a strong potential for ongoing future contributions. If you’d like to attend, please send a short e-mail message to workshop-reg(a)openjdk.java.net with a brief summary of your past contributions in the OpenJDK Community and also your full name, employer (if any), and mobile phone number. This information will be used for registration purposes only and will not be shared outside of Oracle. We’ll try to reply to each request within 48 hours. Free Java Devroom talk proposal: The Future of Java & the JDK: Who is in Charge?
by mark.reinhold＠oracle.com 12 Dec '18

12 Dec '18

Title: The Future of Java & the JDK: Who is in Charge? Abstract: The Java platform has been declared dead on many occasions, yet it’s still one of the most popular programming platforms in the world. What’s the secret behind Java’s ongoing success? What does the future hold, and who gets to decide what that future will look like? Length: 25 minutes Recording: Okay under CC-BY-2.0; CC-BY-SA-2.0 preferred Brief bio: Chief Architect, Java Platform Group, Oracle Blog: https://mreinhold.org/blog Twitter: @mreinhold NOTE: This is an updated version of a similar talk that I presented at the OpenJDK Committers’ Workshop in August, 2018. I expect that it will be of interest here since there will be relatively little overlap between this audience and those who attended the August Workshop.
