DevRoom Proposal: Packaging Java for Linux Next Steps: OSGi Bundles and Eclipse
by Mat Booth 06 Dec '14

06 Dec '14

Title: Packaging Java for Linux Next Steps: OSGi Bundles and Eclipse Abstract: Packaging Java software for Linux distributions has notoriously been difficult and problematic. Even with recent advances in packaging for projects using maven and related build tools, there are still many islands in the Java eco-system that remain extremely difficult for Linux distros to package. Eclipse projects are one such island. Is this talk we will discuss the build systems in use by Eclipse projects, what problems they posed for Linux distro packaging and what we did to improve the situation. Speakers: Mat Booth, Red Hat UK Video and audio recording okay under a CC license. Mat Booth Software Engineer, Red Hat Eclipse Team

JFokus VM Summit
by Charles Oliver Nutter 06 Dec '14

06 Dec '14

Hey all, just wanted to let folks know that we're hosting a JVM Language Summit-like event at JFokus in Stockholm a couple days after FOSDEM. A number of us do the two-step dance in Jan/Feb for these two events, and if you're on-continent it wouldn't be a difficult trip to join us. Looking for speakers and attendees at this point. It will be all day on Monday, 2nd February, and it should be a great opportunity to address a new audience or see new speakers talking about the modern and future JVM. If you're interested in speaking, contact me (@headius) or Marcus Lagergren (@lagergren) or Mattias Karlsson (@matkar). I'll leave email mining to you :-) Hope you can join us as either speaker or attendee! - Charlie

The ARM microJIT
by Edward Nevill 05 Dec '14

05 Dec '14

Title: The ARM microJIT, a JIT for the IoT We have all got used to memory being essentially infinite, however the IoT reopens the constrained device with devices having 256M or less. This project looks at developing an ARM microJIT targeted at these devices. The project is based on the original work I did on the Thumb2 JIT (FOSDEM 2010). The project targets the Raspberry PI which is an ideal IoT development/demonstration platform. Unfortunately the Thumb2 JIT does not support the Raspberry PI because the Raspberry PI does not have the Thumb2 instruction set. This is a project which I am working on in my 'free' time and I hope to have a demonstrable port by FOSDEM. Finally I would like to have a discussion about the future of this work. Speaker: Edward Nevill Permission to record audio and video ok. Edward.

DevRoom Proposal: Life in the trenches
by Andrew Haley 05 Dec '14

05 Dec '14

Title: Life in the trenches, or The Agony and The Ecstasy of Making a Contribution to OpenJDK Abstract: We've been working on OpenJDK for a long time now and we've gained a lot of experience working on the code itself and, perhaps more importantly, working with the Java team inside Oracle. This talk is about our experiences trying make one of the largest ever external contributions to OpenJDK, the AArch64 port. I'll talk about how the OpenJDK contribution process works, and how it doesn't work, and how important it is to gain the trust of people inside Oracle's Java team. I'll discuss the strange asymmetry of being an external contributor to a project but not being able to know all of what is going on. I'll try my best to explain the baffling role of Projects and JEPs. I'll speculate about the future of OpenJDK and how it must change as more people outside Oracle contribute significant slabs of code, and how we must have more external patch reviewers. Finally, I'll open up the floor for discussion. I'm sure we'll have a lot to talk about. Andrew.

DevRoom Proposal: SWT to GTK 3 port and future (or do Java UI libraries have a future)
by Aleksandar Kurtakov 04 Dec '14

04 Dec '14

Title: SWT to GTK 3 port and future (or do Java UI libraries have a future) Abstract: Java UI libraries have always been in the two ends of the (host system integration) spectrum and somehow always suffered from their integration with the host system. SWT is a Java UI library aiming to provide efficient, portable access to the user-interface facilities of the operating systems on which it is implemented. The talk will focus on issues uncovered while working on making SWT run on GTK 3.x, potential future enhancements and a bit of retrospective about what SWT project did wrong in the past to make supporting new version of the underlying library *a* bumpy road. Speakers: Alexander Kurtakov, Red Hat Inc. Alexander Kurtakov Red Hat Eclipse team

DevRoom: OpenJDK Adoption Group Q&A
by Mario Torre 03 Dec '14

03 Dec '14

* Title OpenJDK Adoption Group Q&A * Abstract There's a ton of stuff going on in OpenJDK, projects, repositories, bug database, experiments. This is a lot of potential fun, but the entrance barrier for newcomers is extremely high, and it's easy to get lost and not enjoy the fun anymore. In order to help people wanting to contribute keep track of this intricate forest of development and find their way out, the Adoption Group was created (http://openjdk.java.net/groups/adoption/) This session is an exchange between few of the hackers directly involved with the Adoption Group and the public. We will indeed discuss some of the projects we are currently involved with - like the planned global hack days for jsonp, jigsaw and tools that use jigsaw and http 2.0 with language interoperability - but above all we will answer questions the audience may have in relation to getting involved with OpenJDK, both from a technical perspective and a social one, so that next year you can sit together with us helping even more people to jump on the fun! If you need help organising your next hackday, or you are completely lost tying to get started with OpenJDK, this is the session for you! * Recording on audio and/or video No * Speakers OpenJDK Adoption Group members -- pgp key: http://subkeys.pgp.net/ PGP Key ID: 80F240CF Fingerprint: BA39 9666 94EC 8B73 27FA FC7C 4086 63E3 80F2 40CF Java Champion - Blog: http://neugens.wordpress.com - Twitter: @neugens Proud GNU Classpath developer: http://www.classpath.org/ OpenJDK: http://openjdk.java.net/projects/caciocavallo/ Please, support open standards: http://endsoftpatents.org/

DevRoom Proposal:
by Mario Torre 02 Dec '14

02 Dec '14

* Title Diagnosing Performance Issues Using Thermostat * Abstract Debugging performance problems can be a daunting task, especially when you are short on time and lack proper tools that integrate nicely with your custom application landscape. Thermostat was designed to answer the most interesting questions related to performance measurement and application monitoring. It takes advantage of performance metrics and serviceability features of OpenJDK to provide a holistic view of the system. In this session, attendees will get a chance to see Thermostat in action as it is used to analyse programs, gather data, and debug issues affecting performance and functionality. * Recording me on audio and/or video Yes * Speakers Speaker: Mario Torre, Red Hat, Inc. DevRoom Proposal: Proxy 2.0
by Remi Forax 01 Dec '14

01 Dec '14

Title: Proxy 2.0 Abstract: Since Java 1.3, the JDK embeds the class java.lang.reflect.Proxy API that is able to generate proxies at runtime. Initially used to support RMI, it is currently used in a wide range of applications like Hibernate (for lazy loading), Spring (AOP) or Weld (CDI injection) and also inside the OpenJDK itself to implement things like annotation objects at runtime. But the design of the proxy API shows its age, - it's usage is non transparent (you can see the proxy internals in the stacktrace) - the implementation is slow (the VM is not able to see through a proxy) - new Java features like default methods are not well integrated. This talk will tell the story of Proxy 2.0 API, a new API, its design and its implementation and in particular how the code written for Java 8 is retrofitted to be compatible with Java 7 using its own dog food. The code is freely available here: https://github.com/forax/proxy2 A/V recording: Ok Speaker Bio: Rémi Forax, Assistant Prof at University Paris-East Marne La Vallée, Expert for JSR 292(invokedynamic), 335(lambda), 376(java module) Open source dev of ASM, OpenJDK, Tatoo, etc. Rémi

DevRoom Proposal: Ridiculously RAD - Domain Driven application development using Apache Isis
by Jeroen van der Wal 01 Dec '14

01 Dec '14

Title: Ridiculously RAD - Domain Driven application development using Apache Isis Abstract: In this talk, you'll learn about Apache Isis, an open source Java framework for writing line-of-business enterprise web applications, and access them through REST. An application written in Isis will be a fraction the size it would be if you coded it "traditionally". That's means faster time-to-market and cheaper to maintain. Isis' focus is on domain-driven design, with the emphasis on the bit that matters: the domain. The productivity and clean architecture comes about by omitting all the irrelevant artefacts of a custom-coded n-layer architecture (views, controllers, commands, persistence); you build your app solely and entirely by writing the core domain objects. There's a pattern for this type of approach: naked objects. Isis automatically provides a web application UI inferred directly from the structure and behaviour of your domain objects. What's more, Isis also makes your domain objects accessible through REST following the "Restful Objects" specification. And the pudding is in the eating: Jeroen and his team are building applications using Apache Isis that drive core processes of multi-billion euro companies. Totally FLOSS. Recording me on audio and/or video: - acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license Speaker bio: As an entrepreneur and code junkie Jeroen van der Wal is always looking for the silver bullet in software development. After a 25-year long journey along numerous platforms, languages and paradigms he discovered the Apache Isis project and helped that mature into a state-of-the-art framework for domain driven development. With a small team he is using Apache Isis to deliver mission-critical enterprise applications to customers all over Europe.
