Talk Proposal: JavaEE needs some love, too !
by Remi Forax 30 Nov '13

30 Nov '13

title: JavaEE needs some love, too ! abstract: Java EE implementations like Spring, JBoss or Hibernate use proxies to implement the mapping between annotated methods and services provided by these annotations. This mapping is very similar to the way dynamic language runtimes work internally, but unlike dynamic language runtime, JavaEE implementations doesn't generate bytecode thus can not use invokedynamic. This talk will present a new Java keyword, interceptable, that enables Java the language thus Java EE implementations to use invokedynamic while still being statically typed. Rémi

FOSDEM 2013 - Talk proposal: "Shenandoah - an ultra-low pause-time GC for OpenJDK"
by Roman Kennke 30 Nov '13

30 Nov '13

Title: Shenandoah - an ultra-low pause-time GC for OpenJDK Abstract: Current garbage collectors for OpenJDK all need to stop the application periodically to perform garbage collection tasks. This is a scalability bottleneck because those pause times are dependend on heap size. This is a problem for large-scale applications that require 100GB+ of heap. Shenandoah is a new garbage collector for OpenJDK, currently developed by Red Hat, that aims to reduce GC pause times to a minimum. Specifically, pause time are no longer dependend on heap size. It implements marking and object evacuation to run concurrently with application threads, and utilizing parallel garbage collection threads. In this talk I want to introduce the Shenandoah GC, talk about our motivations, present the technical innvoations that enable Shenandoah to achieve concurrent marking and evacuation, compare Shenandoah with other garbage collectors, and finally give an overview of what we plan to do in the future. Speakers: Roman Kennke, Red Hat Inc. Roman Kennke is a long time free Java (and Software) activist, originally involved in GNU Classpath since 2004, later participated in opening OpenJDK and since then is regular contributor to several parts of OpenJDK (AWT/Swing, general class library, lately Hotspot). After finishing Diploma in 2007 he was employed by aicas, who are building a hard realtime capable Java VM. During 2009 and 2010 worked for Sun Microsystems on Java Webstart. After a short period as contractor for JP Morgan, he's now a Prinipal Software Engineer at Red Hat, where he used to work on Thermostat, the Zero and Shark port of OpenJDK, and currently on the Shenandoah GC. Talk proposals
by Charles Oliver Nutter 28 Nov '13

28 Nov '13

I have a couple topics I could cover of interest to the Java devroom. 1. The Java Native Runtime A refresh and recap of my talk from JVMLS, covering justification and implementation of an FFI (Java-to-native) layer used by JRuby and why we should get this into JDK9 as a supported API. 2. Beyond JVM A talk I'm preparing to do for YOW! Australia that covers Java Native Runtime, Truffle/Graal, alternative JVMs, native object layouts, multi-tenancy, and other possible futures for the platform. It will be loosely written from the perspective of JRuby, where we are exploring all these various futures for our next-gen JRuby runtime to be released in 2014. Those of you who know me should feel free to suggest modifications to these topics or different topics you would be interested in. I have many things I could talk about :-) - Charlie

FOSDEM 2014 - Talk proposal: "The OpenJDK PowerPC/AIX port endgame"
by Volker Simonis 28 Nov '13

28 Nov '13

Hi, together with my colleague Goetz Lindenmaier I want to propose the following talk. Regards, Volker Title: The OpenJDK PowerPC/AIX port endgame Abstract: The PowerPC/AIX porting project[1,2] currently driven by IBM and SAP is a good example how the OpenJDK fosters the cooperation of different players in the Java ecosystem in an open environment. At last years FOSDEM, we presented our JCK-certified JDK7 port. This year, we will showcase our JDK8 port. But more importantly, we will describe the lengthy process of integrating the port into the main OpenJDK repository, thus making it a first class citizen in the OpenJDK environment. This process includes the creation of a JDK Enhancement Proposals[3], the agreement on a detailed Integration Plan between all parties[4], the thorough review of all changes by OpenJDK reviewers, the integration into the main development repositories and finally the downport into a released version. Of course we will also highlight the general improvements in the OpenJDK code base which are the result of our port. Finally, we will be happy to answer any kind of technical questions regarding a JDK port to a new CPU and OS platform. Speakers: Goetz Lindenmaier and Volker Simonis, SAP AG Goetz Lindenmaier and Volker Simonis work for SAP in the SAP JVM JIT Compiler Technology group. Volker is an OpenJDK contributor from the very beginning and recently helped SAP and the SAP JVM team to engage in the OpenJDK project. Goetz is one of the authors of SAP's IA64 port and he crafted various optimizations in HotSpot's C2 JIT compiler. They both drive the PowerPC/AIX port from the SAP side as project lead and main contributors. Recording us on audio and/or video is acceptable under a CC-By-SA-3.0-USA license. Proposed talk for Java DevJam Room - 'From Webrev to Betterrev'
by Daniel Bryant 26 Nov '13

26 Nov '13

Hi, Mani Sarkar and I would like to propose the talk described below for the Java DevJam FOSDEM room this year. Best wishes, Daniel Title: From Webrev to Betterrev: Facilitating Contributions to OpenJDK for the GitHub Generation Abstract: With the rise of GitHub and the recent move of the Eclipse foundation to a social coding model, more and more people are wondering why participation in OpenJDK isn’t keeping up with the times. A small group of people from the London Java Community (LJC) and Adopt OpenJDK are trying to solve this problem by building Betterrev, a platform that will reduce barriers to entry for participation in OpenJDK and also improve visibility of contributions. This presentation will highlight our motivations for the Betterrev project, the primary goals (and proposed roadmap), and our current progress. Our intent is that all attendees will be excited by the potential benefits that the social-coding philosophy could bring to the OpenJDK, and will be encouraged to generously volunteer their time and skills to help push the development of Betterrev forward, with the ultimate goal of creating a highly social ecosystem around contributions to a free Java. Recording: Recording of Daniel and Mani on audio and/or video is (1) acceptable under a CC-By-SA-3.0-USA license Bios: Daniel Bryant has participated in many open-source projects over the past 10 years, and is currently a core contributor (and self-proclaimed evangelist) for the Adopt OpenJDK Betterrev project. By day Daniel works as a hands-on CTO for an ecommerce startup in London, and by night he enjoys engaging with the global developer community. He has a passion for sharing his knowledge through blog posts, writing articles for well known technology websites and also presenting at international conferences, including promoting OpenJDK and Betterrev at JavaOne, Devoxx and LJCConf in 2013. Daniel is an active leader in the London Java Community (LJC), and sits on the LJC JCP committee, participates in the meet-a-mentor program and assists in running hack days. He also enjoys experimenting with practical implementations of Artificial Intelligence, having gained a PhD in this field during his misspent youth as an academic. Mani Sarkar is a passionate Java/JVM developer currently living and working in London, UK. He is an LJC advocate and evangelist to the @adoptopenjdk & @adoptajsr programs, a JCP Member, and an OpenJDK contributor (who has submitted a number of patches, and is also a core contributor to the Betterev project). Talk Proposal for FOSDEM 2014 Java Dev Room
by stephen o'grady 07 Nov '13

07 Nov '13

*Title*: What a Long Strange Trip It's Been: The Past, Present and Future of Java *Abstract*: >From its early beginnings in 1991 as the runtime for interactive television set top boxes to its foundational role today in everything from big data to cloud, Java's rise has had more than its share of twists and turns. Even today, in spite of its widespread and evident market success, there are those who would claim that Java is either dead or dying. Part of the problem, however, may be in outdated perceptions of what Java was versus what it is today. In this session, we'll quantitatively explore the decline of some Java projects against the rise of still others. Understanding what Java was, is and might be will help Java advocates from all areas better communicate the strengths and future of the platform moving forward. What Java is has changed, and the better appreciated these changes are, the better equipped the Java community is to navigate the years ahead. *Recording me on audio and/or video is*: Acceptable under a CC-By-SA-3.0-USA license *Brief Bio*: Stephen O'Grady is the co-founder and Principal Analyst of RedMonk, a boutique industry analyst firm focused on developers. Founded in 2002, RedMonk provides strategic advisory services to some of the most successful technology firms in the world. Proposed talk for FOSDEM 2014 Java Dev Room
by Andrew Dinn 05 Nov '13

05 Nov '13

Hi, Andrew Haley and I are proposing the talk described below for the Java Developer Room this year. regards, Andrew Dinn ----------- Principal Software Engineer Red Hat UK Ltd Registered in UK and Wales under Company Registration No. 3798903 Directors: Michael Cunningham (USA), Matt Parson (USA), Charlie Peters (USA), Paul Hickey (Ireland) Title: OpenJDK on AArch64 Update Abstract: Red Hat's project of porting OpenJDK to run on ARM's new 64-bit architecture began about 18 months ago. Our rapid progress implementing the interpreted runtime was demonstrated at last year's FOSDEM. Since then we have completed our implementation of both the client and server JIT compilers and the project is now approaching its finishing stages. All of which implies that the first high quality, high performance Java runtime available to AArch64 developers will be Free Software. This talk will describe the work we have performed over the last year, explaining how we went about implementing the two JIT compilers. In particular, we will give details of how we have tuned the server compiler to generate code that has been optimized to make use of the AArch64 instruction set. We will demonstrate the latter by running some example programs, displaying the generated AArch64 machine code and comparing it with the code generated by the x86 JIT compiler. Recording: Recording of both Andrews on audio and/or video is acceptable under a CC-By-SA-3.0-USA license. Bios: Andrew Haley is a member of the OpenJDK Governing Board and a Consulting Software Engineer and Java Team Technical Lead at Red Hat. Andrew Dinn is a Principal Software Engineer and Java Team member at Red Hat. He also leads the Byteman Project. Blogs: http://aphredhat.wordpress.com/
