FOSDEM 2014 - Talk proposal: "Enhanced Oblivion"
by Jens Wilke 18 Dec '13

18 Dec '13

Hello everybody, I'd like to join the 2014 java dev room with a talk. Proposal: Title: Enhanced oblivion Abstract: One of the key concepts in IT is caching. Of course, there is lots of caching happening within Java applications, too. However, some Java caching products are dead and others seam a little stale. Hey, LRU was invented long ago, what about recent cache algorithms? I'll talk about modern cache eviction algorithms, why we should care (or not care), what improvements are possible and how to use the cache as a swiss army knife within your application. Maybe, I'll also have some short remarks on the Java Caching Standard (JSR107). Speakers: Jens Wilke, headissue GmbH Started hacking on Open Source in 1993, but got lost in translation meanwhile. Most of the time he is fiddleling around to improve performance within Java applications or to remind fellow colleagues that this program statement might have a serious power drain. As part time general manager of headissue he also works on a holistic approach on optimization. Since this produced no substantial results and needs restarting from time to time, it is now called iterative development. If not working, he enjoys nature on a sailing boat or is playing drums. Recording us on audio and/or video is acceptable under a CC-By-SA-3.0-USA license. Talk Proposal: Ji Gong: Proposal for High Availability JVM Technology on All Platforms
by Xerxes Rånby 02 Dec '13

02 Dec '13

Title: Ji Gong: Proposal for High Availability JVM Technology on All Platforms Abstract: Ji Gong project focuses on empowering JVM technology and guaranteeing its availability. Ji Gong discusses how to deploy a minimal efficient JVM on all platforms including web browsers on mobile devices. Ji Gong re-purpose and utilizes existing work, e.g. IcedTea-web, OpenJDK 8 and FOSS JVM implementations such as JamVM. Ji Gong implement Source Certification Contract, SCC, to verify binary object's. When attempting to run a binary object on your system, users need to trust the binary and its original source code. The question should ask for the authorship of the binary and it's assumed source code, hence SCC authenticates the binary against the source code it claims to be originated from. We will showcase deployment of, SCC signed applications, using JogAmp APIs running on top of Ji Gong within a browser on embedded devices and desktop. Website: http://jogamp.org/wiki/index.php/Ji_Gong_Overview Project Spirit and Name: http://jogamp.org/wiki/index.php/Ji_Gong_Motivation#Project_Name Speakers: Sven Gothel Xerxes Rånby * Brief Bio @Sven Gothel Sven Gothel Sven Gothel leads the JogAmp project since it's inception in 2009 and is an independent consultant. Previously he worked for Sun Microsystems, Inc. driving the new Java Plugin with JNLP Support, enhancing the JOGL project and working with a team on an experimental new multimedia toolkit. He was also employed by ATI & AMD leading development of an embedded OpenGL driver for the aviation industry. He consulted Harman/Becker, Siemens and others in the embedded multimedia field focusing on platform neutrality, including graphics technology with high performance objectives. In 1997 he started an OpenGL language binding for Java called GL4Java. Old guy incapable of doing other things than maintaining finally matured stuff usable within a VM in an independent fashion within the great JogAmp team and with huge help from the people (-> open source). Title: JogAmp Scenarios via GPU: Curvy User Interfaces, Multimedia and Computing Abstract: The JogAmp community creates tools for technology empowerment. JogAmp offers a solution to produce 3D graphics and Curvy user interfaces with multimedia content including audio and computing running on systems ranging from low power mobile and embedded to desktop and servers. JogAmp empower programmers with access to hardware accelerated APIs such as OpenGL, OpenAL and OpenCL. JogAmp offer a patent free implementation to draw resolution independent curved user interfaces and vector graphics using OpenGL on both mobile and desktop graphics processors. Talk proposal: Adding support for OpenJDK 8 to JamVM
by Robert Lougher 01 Dec '13

01 Dec '13

Title: Adding support for OpenJDK 8 to JamVM Abstract: OpenJDK 8 has required substantial changes to the VM to support the new features in the language. This talk will provide an overview of the modifications required to JamVM to support them. This includes JSR292 (invokedynamic), JSR308 (type annotations), JSR335 (lambda expressions) and JSR901 (method parameter reflection). As of now, JamVM fully supports OpenJDK 8. Forgot to add the following: Blog: http://draenog.blogspot.co.uk/ Bio: I am the developer of JamVM, an open-source Java Virtual Machine, first released in 2003. Recording: Recording on audio and/or video is acceptable under a CC-By-SA-3.0-USA license.

Talk proposal: "OCaml-Java: an ML implementation for the JVM"
by forum＠x9c.fr 01 Dec '13

01 Dec '13

Title: OCaml-Java: an ML implementation for the JVM Abstract: The goal of the OCaml-Java project is to allow seamless integration of OCaml and Java. It provides a compiler generating Java bytecode from OCaml sources. The JVM allows not only to reach decent performance (compared to the OCaml native compiler), but also to get rid of the global runtime lock of the original OCaml implementation, thus paving the way to shared-memory concurrent programming. Besides simply running OCaml code on a JVM, the OCaml-Java project is also interested in blending both languages. It is hence possible to develop complex applications by mixing the two languages in a single codebase. Interoperability is key to take advantage of the expressivity of OCaml and the great libraries of Java. In this talk, we will show how the OCaml-Java compiler is derived from the original OCaml compiler, and then how it was extended to allow manipulation of Java instances from OCaml programs. Recording: Recording me on audio and/or video is acceptable under a CC-By-SA-3.0-USA license. Bio: Xavier Clerc has been working at INRIA as a research engineer since 2008. He develops the OCaml-Java project during its free time, and also spent several months in the OCaml Labs (Cambridge University) in order to boost the project. by Dalibor Topic 30 Nov '13

30 Nov '13

*Title*: JDK 7 Updates: Lessons Learned *Abstract*: The JDK 7 Updates Project in the OpenJDK Community has been around for more then two years, breaking a new ground in how JDK updates are made and trying out a few new things in the process. This session will go into lessons learned from producing updates to the JDK as part of an open source Project. Some of the new things worked, while others required some tweaking. I'll cover lessons learned on a broad set of technical issues, from forest and repository management, tagging, development processes & transparency to release management and communication. *Recording me on audio and/or video is*: Not acceptable Bio: Dalibor Topić lives in Hamburg, Germany, and works as principal product manager for Oracle. He joined the OpenJDK project in order to help make it a successful open source project, and stayed for anchoring Java in Linux distributions, and as an all around Java FOSS community guy.
