DevRoom Proposal: InvokeBinder: Fluent Programming for Method Handles
by Charles Oliver Nutter 01 Dec '14

01 Dec '14

Title: InvokeBinder: Fluent Programming for Method Handles Abstract: The MethodHandle API provides a powerful way to build optimized function pointers that do a wide variety of call-path adaptations. Unfortunately, the API as designed requires mental contortions to write anything more than trivial handle chains by hand. Adaptations must be made backwards from the target, argument-list modifications are done by index and length, and debugging failed adaptations can be a terrific challenge. InvokeBinder seeks to make method handles fun and easy to use by providing a fluent API, building adaptations from the call forward, allowing argument-list manipulation by name and wildcard, and much more. We'll explore everything InvokeBinder does today and talk about improvements for the future. A/V recording: OK - Charlie

DevRoom Proposal: What Three Big Development Trends Mean for Java
by stephen o'grady 01 Dec '14

01 Dec '14

Title: What Three Big Development Trends Mean for Java Abstract: As with the past few years, we'll start by examining via various statistical benchmarks where Java is today and how it is performing relative to its competition. We'll mine various communities use and discussion of Java to try and determine where Java ranks today versus its historical performance. With that foundation set, we'll examine three important developer trends and the opportunities - or threats - they present to Java. From the convenience of cloud to the challenges of application lifecycles to the fatigue of fragmentation, we'll walk through the basics of the choices and challenges developers are facing today with an eye towards their implications for Java. DevRoom Proposal: JFree - The Long and Winding Road (Ahead)
by David Gilbert 29 Nov '14

29 Nov '14

Title: JFree - The Long and Winding Road (Ahead) Abstract: This year the JFree project (that’s JFreeChart and friends) turns 15! Though looking forward not backward is the JFree way, so this session will cover a couple of the latest free things we’ve been working on. We fly *high* above the low-level virtual machine technology, even above the standard Java APIs, so if you want to soar with eagles (and your brain hurts from some other talks about complex low-level *magic*) then come a see some shiny graphical things and we’ll promise not to talk about anything that’s complicated! In this session, you will hear about our recent JavaFX work, or get a quick demo of JFreeSVG, or maybe we’ll surprise you with something else graphical, awesome and free. :-) Recording me on audio and/or video acceptable under a CC-BY-2.0 license. Bio: David Gilbert lives in Zurich, Switzerland, and currently works for the Six Group (Swiss Stock Exchange) developing trading systems. David develops free software to avoid becoming rich. Hello all, I'm Yair Zaslavsky, A senior Sw Engineer at Red-Hat, working on oVirt open source projects. I would like to present two presentations which deal with the work that we've done around AAA and plugins architecture for oVirt 3.5. Here are the details: Type of submission: Presentation Title: AAA in oVirt 3.5 Abstract: The AAA (Authentication, Authorizaion, Accounting) mechanism and methologdy was changed at oVirt 3.5. From hard coded support for various ldap vendors , all require Kerberos authentication a shift was made to a pluggable architecture, where there is a clear seperation between authentication, authorization and accounting providers. Instead of keeping configurations in the database, the configuration is now kept in easily editable config file. The presentation will deal with the changes made and will introduce the oVirt extensions API , which can be further used with other pluggable modules (i.e logging). Speaker bio: Yair Zaslavsky is oVirt engine co-maintainer, and is a Senior SW Engineer at the SW infrasturcture group of RHEV. Yair mainly dealt with issues around AAA since he first started working for Red-Hat more than 4 years ago. Comments: N/A Links to the project (including its source code) - Project: http://www.ovirt.org Related projects - oVirt ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Type of submission: Presentation Title: EXTAPI - an API to develop plugins Abstract: In oVirt 3.5 we use shifted the AAA to be based on pluggable architecture. We had several discussions and dilemmas around which plugin infrasturcture to use and eventually, we developed our own plugin infrastructue framework. The plugin infastructure framework can be used with other projects, autonmously of oVirt. In the presentation we will talk about the design considerations and usage of the plugin infrastructure. DevRoom Proposal: Is There Life After 7u80?
by dalibor topic 24 Nov '14

24 Nov '14

Title: Is There Life After 7u80? Abstract: The JDK 7u80 release is expected to be the last Oracle-led JDK 7u release developed as part of the OpenJDK JDK 7 Update Project. At this point, OpenJDK community development efforts have shifted towards JDK 8 Update, JDK 9 and related Projects targeting JDK 10 and beyond. In this session, we'll discuss different directions the JDK 7 Updates Project in OpenJDK could take after JDK 7u80, and try to sense if it's destined for a well-deserved retirement, or some form of afterlife. DevRoom Proposal: The Wisdom Of Crowd Testing OpenJDK
by dalibor topic 24 Nov '14

24 Nov '14

Title: The Wisdom Of Crowd Testing OpenJDK Abstract: In the beginning, there were bugs. In order to find them faster, before a JDK release, the OpenJDK Adoption Group began a quality outreach effort. Initially focused on JDK 8, the effort expanded to cover JDK 7 Updates, JDK 8 Updates and JDK 9 OpenJDK Projects. It now lists dozens of open source projects and communities that participate in testing early access builds of the JDK, report issues they find, and help get them resolved in time. In this session, you'll learn what worked, and what didn't, and what you can do to join the OpenJDK crowd testing fun with your own open source project to help us find showstopper bugs before they can bite. DevRoom Proposal: MappedByteBuffer Operations SpeedUp of 150x
by Christopher Friedt 19 Nov '14

19 Nov '14

Hi, I'd like to give a presentation in the Java Developer Room next year at FOSDEM. I've put together a proposal below based on the template at [1]. Title: MappedByteBuffer.hurray()! Abstract: This patchset [2], currently implemented as a proof of concept using JamVM and GNU Classpath, enables 1) the JVM to mmap special files (i.e. those in /dev) - something no other VM can do AFAIK 2) a true, direct, MappedByteBuffer from any mapping or pointer in the CRT 3) provides a safe, memory-managed Java backing array, via MappedByteBuffer.array() 4) speeds up MappedByteBuffer I/O by factor of up to 150 times!! In human terms, it lets me draw to the FB using pure Java :-) Since originally posting my patchset, I have made a few changes including removing the custom JNI calls in favour of using sun.misc.Unsafe API. * If possible describe why Free Java is helpful or perhaps even essential to your project. This would have been practically impossible to do with a closed-source JVM and class library. JamVM and GNU Classpath have been open source for as long as I've known, and that's enabled me to become familiar enough with the source to make it do whatever I needed in various embedded environments. * What the audience will learn from the talk. I will provide a fairly minimal VMWare image so that the audience can easily download the VM, modify some Java code, and draw whatever demo's they would like to to the FB - using pure Java! My forks are up on github [3,4] * How can people help out with the project, what feedback are you looking for? I would like to have some feedback about the patchset to get it in good enough shape for acceptance to GNU Classpath and JamVM. I would like to entice some other tinkerers to port the changes to OpenJDK as well, and would like to get some feedback about possibly using JNA in combination with my /dev/fb and /dev/event classes. Lastly, I would very much like to open up the discussion about forming a performance-optimization group. Recording me on audio and/or video: YES (acceptable) Brief Bio: Currently, Christopher Friedt is Principal Embedded Firmware Engineer at MMB Networks. He has been hacking Linux for about 15 years and embedded Java for about 10. He has worked in the areas of industrial and consumer radio, mobile radio, embedded electronics, and signal processing since 2006 when he first laid his hands on a v4T ARM. You can find him hash-tagging various things on Google+ most frequently these days. DevRoom Proposal: Scala Collections or Java 8 Streams On Type Steroids
by François Garillot 18 Nov '14

18 Nov '14

This talk is a collections / streams deep dive for the functional programmer on the fence between Scala and Java. Among those of us who have picked up Scala, who hasn't — at first at least — been puzzled by an error message regarding the enigmatic `CanBuildFrom` ? And with the arrival of Java 8 and its streams, isn't it time to wonder which approach to adopt when coding with collections ? We'll start with a quick comparison between Scala collections and Java stream, before looking at their internals, showing through compiler errors, performance benchmarks and type wizardry that those are really two tools with different design goals. You should come out of this talk wiser about when to use the Java or the Scala approach, and better equipped to deal with potential compiler errors in the future. This talk is built in a progressive way, and there will be some takeaway for every skill level, both in Java and Scala. Recording me on audio and/or video: YES Bio : François Garillot joined Typesafe in 2011 after a past life in type theory. He worked at the interface between the Scala compiler and interactive requests, such as those made by the Scala IDE. He now works on big data analytics on the JVM, with a keen interest in Spark. 30 Jan '14

Hi all! It's time to announce the talks that we will present at FOSDEM this year. It has been a very difficult choice, all the presentations are of very high quality, and is very unfortunate that we had to pick only a subset of them, but especially this year we only had one single day. We hope the speakers that for a reason or another we were not able to select this time won't be upset with us! As we've been doing every year, and in a way compatible with our resources, we'll try to make up for this with a special surprise, so stay tuned and check your inbox in the coming days :) So, without further ado, here's the list of the presentations, with the schedule: 11:00 - 11:25 The State of OpenJDK 11:30 - 11:55 OpenJDK on AArch64 Update 12:00 - 12:25 Shenandoah - an ultra-low pause-time GC for OpenJDK 12:30 - 12:55 The OpenJDK PowerPC/AIX port endgame 14:00 - 14:25 What a Long Strange Trip It's Been: The Past, Present and Future of Java 14:30 - 14:55 The Evolution of Android's runtime 15:00 - 15:25 Adding support for OpenJDK 8 to JamVM 15:30 - 15:55 Ji Gong: Proposal for High Availability JVM Technology on All Platforms 16:00 - 16:25 The Java Native Runtime 16:30 - 16:55 From Webrev to Betterrev: Facilitating Contributions to OpenJDK 17:00 - 17:25 JDK 7 Updates: Lessons Learned 17:30 - 17:55 Thermostat 1.0, two years of awesomness and beyond 18:00 - 19:00 Governing Board Meeting We will also notify speakers that are selected directly via mail in the next days.
