News : Call For Developer Rooms
by info＠fosdem.org 26 Oct '09

26 Oct '09

A *devroom* is a room in which projects can organize their own schedule made of presentations, brainstorming and hacking sessions. Our goal is to stimulate developer collaboration and cross-pollination between projects, and as such we strongly favor projects with similar goals and domains to host a devroom together. *Distribution projects:* As every year we only have a limited number of rooms, yet every year more and more individual distributions request a Developer Room at FOSDEM. We do not want to have to choose between them, but instead push our mission of a collaboration platform and cross-pollination even further. We will host mixed distribution rooms where talks and sessions will be organized *by topic*. Contributors from all distributions are welcome to join in order to participate, attend, propose topics and sessions. To do so, please subscribe to the distro mailinglist [1]. .... What we offer: * a room on Saturday and/or Sunday, * a video projector (with VGA cable) * power (C/E plugs) * wired (RJ-45) network with Internet access at the speaker's desk, * best-effort shared wireless Internet access (a and b), * publication of the schedule on the FOSDEM website, including speaker bios and talk abstracts. .... Conditions for requests: * preference for requests with a general topic, eg. from projects with similar goals/domains, * be involved in Free or Opensource Software (the projects produce and release software under an opensource license or otherwise contributes to opensource activities and communities), * send us a devroom request before 2009-11-22 as described below, Distribution talks are organized collectively on the distro mailinglist [2]. Others can request a devroom by submitting the form below. For further questions, contact devrooms(a)fosdem.org [3]. The number of available rooms is limited so the FOSDEM organization will select the proposals that can get a devroom. *Key Dates:* 2009-11-22: Deadline for devroom requests 2009-11-29: Acceptance notification of devrooms 2010-02-06 to 2009-02-07: FOSDEM 2010 -------- DEVROOM REQUEST FORM ------------------------------------------------ For more information, or to fill in the form check out: http://www.fosdem.org/2010/call-developer-rooms [1] http://lists.fosdem.org/mailman/listinfo/dist2010 [2] http://lists.fosdem.org/mailman/listinfo/dist2010 [3] mailto:devrooms@fosdem.org

suggestion for ODF dev room
by Hanssens Bart 16 Oct '09

16 Oct '09

Hi, as you may know, several stakeholders started with organizing ODF plugfests, testing the ODF interoperability of proprietary and open source software. It might be interesting to have a devroom on FOSDEM, focusing on libraries for ODF like jOpenDocument (Java), ODFDOM (ODFToolkit, Java), AODL (ODFToolkit, C#), ODFPy (Python) and perhaps some others (there are one or two PHP libraries that I know of, and Qt also has some ODF support) Especially with ODF 1.2 coming up, with new features like RDF metadata and XML-DSIG, it could be interesting to have developers from various projects in the same room to solve a few issues and/or help each other out with implementing these features. Best regards, Bart Hanssens Interop expert at Fedict OASIS OIC TC Chair

Are there Delphi/Free Pascal developers coming to FOSDEM?
by Mark Daems 14 Oct '09

14 Oct '09

I'm a pascal developer living close to Brussels. Currently I'm managing the Zeoslib project which provides a set of database connectivity components for Delphi and Lazarus/Free Pascal. Last year I was at FOSDEM but didn't notice much pascal activity around there. My question is very short : Is somebody aware of some Fpc/Lazarus/Delphi developers attending FOSDEM? As the call for speakers/lightning talks/... is opened it would be nice to know if there's some interest for talks/presentations/dev sessions/... about zeoslib or even more in general fpc and/or delphi related subjects. Maybe we meet soon at FOSDEM, Mark

News : Call For Lighning Talks
by info＠fosdem.org 12 Oct '09

12 Oct '09

*Lightning Talks* are your chance for 15 minutes of fame: every free or open source project can apply for giving a lightning talk at FOSDEM. Our goal is to offer all the projects that do not fit in a specific main track or devroom the opportunity to speak. During exactly 15 minutes, one person gets to present the project or any aspect of it. All the lightning talks happen in a large room that can host up to 300 people. .... Before applying, note that: * Only existing open source projects will be considered, * If the proposed talk would better fit a devroom, we will forward your request to them, * Projects that do not participate in the current or previous FOSDEM edition will be favored over other ones. .... The lightning talks will follow the following procedure: * In order to guarantee a smooth speaker switch, the speaker should attend the talk before his, * A fixed computer will be used for all presentations: speakers have to send in their presentation one week in advance, * There will be a notorious clock that indicates the time the speaker has left. When it rings after exactly 15 minutes, the speaker has one last sentence to finish up... If you are interested in doing a Lightning Talk at FOSDEM 2010, submit the form below ! *Key Dates:* 2009-12-20: Deadline for lightning talk requests 2009-12-28: Acceptance notification of lightning talks 2009-01-10: Final schedule announcement 2010-02-06 to 2009-02-07: FOSDEM 2010 For more information about lightningtalks, contact: /lightningtalks(a)fosdem.org/ The lightning talks schedule information will be published on the FOSDEM website, including all the information you provide (except email). -------- LIGHTNING TALK REQUEST FORM ----------------------------------------- For more information, or to fill in the form check out: http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_lightningtalks

News : Call For Main Tracks
by info＠fosdem.org 12 Oct '09

12 Oct '09

The goal of the *main tracks* is to host high-quality seminars for a broad and technical audience. Every track is organized around a theme (security, kernel, collaboration, ...) and contains 3 seminars. The main tracks are held in the two biggest rooms, giving a seat to 550 and 1400 visitors. You can propose a main track talk by filling out the form below. Using all received submissions, we will select the main track themes and accompanying talks. .... Before applying, be aware that: * A speaker is given exactly 50 minutes time, include questions and answers. A moderator will be there showing you signs of 15, 10 and 5 minutes left. * The subject should be about free or open source software development. * The proposed lecture should be technical. Our visitors do not come to FOSDEM for a marketing talk or a simple overview of the features of some product. * Accordingly, a main track talk speaker should be a developer of the project. * All main track talks will be recorded. The recordings and slides will be made available freely, shortly after the event. .... Further practical considerations: * By sending in your abstract you acknowledge that you keep the dates of 6-7 Feburary 2010 free in case your proposal has been selected. * The travel expenses and hotel bookings of main track speakers are covered by FOSDEM. Speakers are kindly asked to book their travel themselves while FOSDEM manages the hotel. Bringing your partner is encouraged but his/her costs are not covered by FOSDEM. (except the hotel) * You will need to keep proofs of your expenses, reimbursement will be done after the event. If you are interested in doing a Main Track talk at FOSDEM 2010, submit the form below ! *Key Dates:* 2009-11-22: Deadline for main track talk requests 2009-11-29: Acceptance notification of main tracks 2010-02-06 to 2009-02-07: FOSDEM 2010 For more information about main tracks, contact /maintracks(a)fosdem.org/ -------- MAIN TRACK TALK REQUEST FORM ---------------------------------------- For more information, or to fill in the form check out: http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_main_tracks

News : Call For Participation
by info＠fosdem.org 12 Oct '09

12 Oct '09

FOSDEM [1], the most developer-oriented Free and Opensource conference in Europe, is taking place in Brussels, Belgium [2] on *Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February 2010*. Apart from having many invited speakers, the conference offers developer rooms, stands and lightning talks to projects from the Free and Opensource community. This results in a staggering number of 250+ lectures! We hereby welcome proposals from speakers and projects to talk in a main track, man a stand, or hold a lightning talk. /Information on developer rooms will become available later, as we are slightly reworking the concept/. As every year, we have only a limited number of rooms, space for stands and lightning talk slots. Since we always receive more requests than we can host, a committee within the FOSDEM organizing team will review all proposals. Selection will be based on possible impact, our experience of previous editions and diversity in the offerings. .... Main Tracks During the two days of the conference the biggest rooms are reserved for the three keynotes and the eighteen technical lectures giving a seat for no less than 2000 visitors. The main tracks are categorized in six general topics going from development languages, security, kernel, collaboration,... When holding a main track talk, you have the privilege to have your travel costs refunded and a hotel room booked by the organization. See http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_main_tracks [3] .... Devrooms Our goal for the developer rooms is to stimulate developer collaboration and cross-pollination between projects. /We are reworking the concept of devrooms a bit, to better achieve those goals using the room capacity we have/. .... Stands We offer stands in the hallways to projects that want to present themselves to the visitors in a more personal fashion. Stands can be used to share information, demo software, sell merchandising or give away goodies. See http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_stands [4] .... Lightning talks Lightning talks are for all other projects that want to present something. A lightning talk is a short talk in which a project can introduce itself, talk about recent developments, or share exciting new directions. See http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_lightningtalks [5] FOSDEM 2010 will be the 10th edition of the event, which has been steadily growing every year in importance and in the number of visitors. Our goal is to provide a platform to Free and Opensource projects to meet, discuss, present their current and future developments, both to their own developer and user community as to other projects that are present. Given the large amount of active contributors from many different projects present during the conference, it is an exceptionally well suited occasion to share goals and ideas with people from other communities, which is something we strongly encourage and do our best to support. Of course, the event only lives through the projects that take part in it, and through the many FOSS contributors who attend. We merely do our best to provide the best possible service to the FOSS community at large. .... Key dates: * 2009-11-22: Deadline for *main track talk* requests * 2009-11-22: Deadline for *stand* requests * 2009-11-29: Acceptance notification of stands and main tracks * 2009-12-20: Deadline for *lightning talk* requests * 2009-12-28: Acceptance notification of lightning talks * 2010-02-06 to 2009-02-07: FOSDEM 2010 For more information, or to fill in the form check out: http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_participation [1] http://fosdem.org [2] http://fosdem.org/practical/transportation [3] http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_main_tracks [4] http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_stands [5] http://fosdem.org/2010/call_for_lightningtalks
