First time attendee
by Samantha Kosko 03 Sep '13

03 Sep '13

All: Hi... my name is Samantha and I am trying to finalize all of my companies plans for FOSDEM and we are all first time attendees. We have been selected to have a stand and the event and wanted to get some feedback on what we should do with giveaways and staff for the stand. We have a limited number of people in EMEA that can attend and I want to make sure that i am using my resources as best as I can. If anyone has any information they can help me with on this ... i would be forever thankful! -- Samantha Kosko Field Marketing Manager @ 10gen, The MongoDB Company Twitter: @sam_10gen Zerply: http://zerply.com/samantha-kosko/public We are hiring!

First videos soon to be available
by Wouter Verhelst 03 Mar '12

03 Mar '12

Hi, I've started uploading the first videos recorded at FOSDEM for the main tracks, lightning talks, and cross-distribution devroom. Please note that not all videos are available yet, and that they need to be synced to our mirror network first before you'll be able to watch them. You should be able to see the videos by going to <http://video.fosdem.org/>, or by clicking on the right link when going to the schedule on the website (after the next update). 2012 presentations
by Raffaele Recalcati 20 Feb '12

20 Feb '12

As I believe in this conference growing years-by-years I'm convinced that a proper presentation archive is needed. Obviously we need the collection of presentation and a good storage to put it. In order to solve the first item I guess an announcement on these and other ml like this "Hey 2012 speaker, can you please send us your presentation? We'll put it on the website". For the second one I have no idea what is your server situation and if some more organization or money are needed. I think that the team comes very tired to the end of FOSDEM and it is natural that it is very difficult also to do this job. In any case, I'm convinced that 2012 presentation archive is very useful for people, like me, who coudn't come, but who would like to have all of the interesting information. What can I do to fix this situation? Raffaele -- www.opensurf.it

by Mathias Huber 13 Feb '12

13 Feb '12

Dear Fosdem team, for a news item in Linux-Magazin, could you estimate the attendance figures for 2012? What were they in 2011? How many more rooms were available through the use of building K? Is the date for 2013 already set? Thanks a lot, Mathias -- Mathias Huber, stellv. Slides/attachments in schedule/website
by Pascal Bleser 13 Feb '12

13 Feb '12

The schedule now includes the attachments that speakers have put into our conferencing system (typically slides), e.g.: http://fosdem.org/2012/schedule/event/manage_diverse_equip The links are in the box on the right, under "Attachments". There is currently no "list of all attachments" -- dunno whether that would be needed. If so, please let us know. cheers -- Pascal Bleser <loki(a)fosdem.org> http://fosdem.org/ FOSDEM 2012 ::: 4 + 5 February 2012 in Brussels, Belgium Free and Opensource Software Developers European Meeting

osdem.org website archive
by Frank Gevaerts 11 Feb '12

11 Feb '12

Hi, I spent some time "rescuing" the old osdem (2001) website from archive.org. All internal links are relative, so it should be straightforward to put it in the archive section of fosdem.org. There are still some incorrect links in /comm.html (the original announcement), mainly because I'm not sure what they should point to. There are also some mailto: links that might or might not be appropriate. I'm attaching the current set of files. Frank -- "Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it." - Brian W. Kernighan

Hi all, the videos listed at http://video.fosdem.org/2009/devrooms/gnustep/ do not exist. Random tests across the other subdirectories didn't turn up any other missing files. -- Richard

Debugging the travel instruction
by Nico Van Cleemput 11 Feb '12

11 Feb '12

Hi I think there are some small bugs in the travel instructions. I can only speak about the instructions for arriving by train in Brussels South, but maybe some other people can also post there experiences. I think some small changes might be needed in some cases. Or maybe someone local who often uses the public transport can check everything. This is currently on the website: By Train >From *Brussels South* (a.k.a. "*Bruxelles Midi*", "*Brussel Zuid*" or "*Gare du Midi*") Station (about *30 minutes*): - Take the Metro line 2 <http://stib.be/appl/EN/40000Eng/M/40002E.htm>, direction Simonis (elisabeth) - Get off at station *Louise* - Take the tram 94 <http://stib.be/appl/EN/40000Eng/T/40094E.htm>, direction Herrmann-Debroux - get off at stop *ULB*. And these are my remarks: 1. You can take both Metro line 2 and 8: they run completely parallel between Brussels South and Louise. 2. None of the signs at the tram stops or on the trams mention Herrmann-Debroux. You need the tram in the direction "Trammuseum/Musée du Tram". 3. At Saturday and Sunday tram 94 is limited to Legrande. So you need to take the tram until Legrande, get off and continue: 1. You follow the rails down in Terkamerenlaan/Bld de la Cambre 2. At the first intersection you go to the right into Franklin Rooseveltlaan/Avenue Franklin Roosevelt 3. After about 300 meters you will see the ULB at your left. I hope this useful. I planned to do this last year, but forgot it and only realized it again when I arrived Saturday morning and didn't remember which tram I had to take. Nico

February 18th & 19th - Android Hackathon: Brussels
by pjv 11 Feb '12

11 Feb '12

There's a Global Android Dev Camp in Brussels next weekend. Read on below. This only makes sense for developers well-versed in Java (and at least a bit in Android too). If you're not a developer but still interested, please know that we have a public demo hour (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGh4RExINGR2V2FZNDdKOH…) and that we will be interacting online on Google+: http://gplus.to/gadcbru . We expect that many of the apps will be open sourced. Finally, if you live abroad. Your local GTUG may very well be organizing a local Dev Camp as well. See http://android-dev-camp-2012.blogspot.com/ . --- On the weekend of February 18th and 19th there is an Android hackathon in Brussels, organized by the BruGTUG. This coincides with a Global Android Dev Camp happening the same weekend over Google+ Hangouts. Android developers from all over the world come together at more than 50 locations and write app code - nonstop! Globally, about 1,000 developers are expected - from Brussels to Berlin, to Warsaw and London, to Brazzaville, Kyoto and San Diego. * Learn about hands-on Android app development * The event will include a beginner-level jumpstart session on the major features of Android, focused on 4.0 development, Fragments, and releasing to the Market. Android enthusiasts will be on hand to help and to answer questions throughout the weekend. * Build with Us or Build Your Own * Throughout the weekend, other GTUG members, locally or globally, will be building Android apps and sharing the code with you so you can code along. If, on the other hand, you already have a great idea for what to build, bring that idea with you to the hackathon, pitch it in the morning and form a team. Even better, bring along anything you can prepare ahead of time (sketches, designs, mockups, an empty template app etc.) and use the time, information and talented people provided at the hackathon to develop your idea into a working application, then share it with the world. * At the end of the day, we'll invite you to share your Android app with the world. * What Do I Need? * We will provide facilities and experts to help you learn to use Android and write your application. Just bring your laptop, ideas, absolute concentration and enthusiasm to complete the mix. * When and Where? * The Brussels hackathon will take place Saturday and Sunday, February 18th and 19th. * from 10:00(am) to 03:00(am) the first day, and from 09:00(am) to Sunday 20:00. The location will not allow us to stay the night, so this will not be required or provided, but you are free to continue your work overnight at your own location. The deadline to finish your hack is Sunday 18:00. * It will be held at Outpost GameCenter, Rue de la Tribune 8, Brussel: http://www.outpost.be/website/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=… This location is accessible via train or metro via Central Station or Madou, and some limited street parking should be possible for cars. This is the last chance to sign up https://docs.google.com/a/gtugs.org/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=d… You may also want to circle our G+ page: http://gplus.to/gadcbru . Lastly, please actively spread the news, tell your friends, and create a social media storm using #GADC and #BruGTUG. Thanks for your support. Together we can create amazing things. -- pjv
