Daniel, The ham-radio info booth of 2015 was the result of the devroom gnuradio/software defined radio of 2014 where we had a number of people saying "concidering the audience for this devroom, why not try to promote ham-radio a little bit while we are there". So that is why we where in the building where that devroom was held. But, of course, as ham-radio is all about communication, signal-processing and with some homebrew electronics thrown in, you could probably link it to multiple devrooms at FOSDEM. But feel free to make a little bit of publicity for our infobooth / demonstrations in your corner of FOSDEM :-) Cheerio! Kr. Bonne. Call for Participation: Software Defined Radio Devroom at FOSDEM 2016
by Martin Braun 04 Dec '15

04 Dec '15

Dear friends and colleagues, next year's FOSDEM (the free and open source developer's meeting in Brussels, Europe) will, once again, feature a track on Software Defined Radio. Therefore, we invite developers and users from the free software radio community to join us for this track and present your talks or demos. Software Radio has become an important tool to allow anyone access the EM spectrum. Using free software radio libraries and applications and cheap hardware, anyone can now start hacking on wireless communications, remote sensing, radar or other applications. At FOSDEM, we hope to network all these projects and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward and get more people involved. The track's web site resides at: http://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/gnuradio/wiki/FOSDEM Here, we will publish updates and announcements. The final schedule will be available through Pentabarf and the official FOSDEM website. ** Submit your presentations To suggest a talk, go to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM16 and follow the instructions (you need an account, but can use your account from last year if you have one). You need to create an 'Event'; make sure it's in the Software Defined Radio track! Lengths aren't fixed, but give a realistic estimate and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). Also, don't forget to include time for Q&A. Typical slot lengths would be 30 Minutes including QA. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an open source conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations. Of course, we like nitty-gritty technical stuff. We will reserve time for interactiveness, it won't all be talks. ** Important Dates FOSDEM is January 30th & 31st 2016. * December 4th 2015: Submission Deadline * December 18th 2016: Announcement of final schedule * January 31st 2016: SDR Track (Sunday) ** Steering Committee The track committee consists of: * Philipp Balllister (OpenEmbedded / OpenSDR) * Martin Braun (GNU Radio) * Sylvain Munaut (OsmoCom) Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. Martin

FOSDEM Code of Conduct
by Johan van Selst 15 Nov '15

15 Nov '15

Just a short note to let the community know that the FOSDEM staff has not been ignoring the discussion about appropriate conduct, inclusiveness and harassment at conferences. We do take these issues seriously. The organisation wishes to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all participants and does not condone offensive behaviour. This is already established policy. There will be a FOSDEM Code of Conduct that clarifies the position of the organisation in this regard. We plan to publish this text soon. For several years already, FOSDEM has had a coordinator for concerns regarding social conduct at the conference (name and mobile telephone number have been published on the first page of the visitor booklet). For the next event, we plan to have a small coordination team, with simple and clear contact information. Regarding accessibility, we are aware that the conference location is not ideal for everybody. We try to be as accommodating as possible to attendees with accessibility needs. For several years, we have also had a coordinator who can be approached with any questions regarding this (again, name and telephone number are in the booklet). Best regards, Johan van Selst on behalf of the FOSDEM team

FOSDEM is one of the world's premier meetings of free software developers, with over five thousand people attending each year. FOSDEM 2016 takes place 30-31 January 2016 in Brussels, Belgium. http://fosdem.org This email contains information about: - Real-Time communications dev-room and lounge, - speaking opportunities, - volunteering in the dev-room and lounge, - related events around FOSDEM, including the XMPP summit, - social events (including the Saturday night dinner), - the Planet aggregation sites for RTC blogs Call for participation - Real Time Communications (RTC) ======================================================= The Real-Time dev-room and Real-Time lounge is about all things involving real-time communication, including: XMPP, SIP, WebRTC, telephony, mobile VoIP, codecs, privacy and encryption. The dev-room is a successor to the previous XMPP and telephony dev-rooms. We are looking for speakers for the dev-room and volunteers and participants for the tables in the Real-Time lounge. The dev-room is only on Saturday, 30 January 2016. The lounge will be present for both days. To discuss the dev-room and lounge, please join the FSFE-sponsored Free RTC mailing list: https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/free-rtc Speaking opportunities ---------------------- Note: if you used Pentabarf before, please use the same account/username Main track: the deadline for main track presentations is midnight today, 30 October. Leading developers in the Real-Time Communications field are encouraged to consider submitting a presentation to the main track at https://fosdem.org/submit Real-Time Communications dev-room: deadline 27 November Please also use the Pentabarf system to submit a talk proposal for the dev-room. On the "General" tab, please look for the "Track" option and choose "Real-Time devroom". https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM16/ Other dev-rooms: some speakers may find their topic is in the scope of more than one dev-room. It is permitted to apply to more than one dev-room but please be kind enough to tell us if you do this. You can find the full list of dev-rooms at https://www.fosdem.org/2016/schedule/tracks/ Lightning talks: deadline 27 November The lightning talks are an excellent opportunity to introduce a wider audience to your project. Given that dev-rooms are becoming increasingly busy, all speakers are encouraged to consider applying for a lightning talk as well as a slot in the dev-room. On the "General" tab, please look for the "Track" option and choose "Lightning Talks". https://fosdem.org/submit First-time speaking? -------------------- FOSDEM dev-rooms are a welcoming environment for people who have never given a talk before. Please feel free to contact the dev-room administrators personally if you would like to ask any questions about it. Submission guidelines --------------------- The Pentabarf system will ask for many of the essential details. Please remember to re-use your account from previous years if you have one. In the "Submission notes", please tell us about: - the purpose of your talk - any other talk applications (dev-rooms, lightning talks, main track) - availability constraints and special needs You can use HTML in your bio, abstract and description. If you maintain a blog, please consider providing us with the URL of a feed with posts tagged for your RTC-related work. We will be looking for relevance to the conference and dev-room themes, presentations aimed at developers of free and open source software about RTC-related topics. Please feel free to suggest a duration between 20 minutes and 55 minutes but note that the final decision on talk durations will be made by the dev-room administrators. As the two previous dev-rooms have been combined into one, we may decide to give shorter slots than in previous years so that more speakers can participate. Please note FOSDEM aims to record and live-stream all talks. The CC-BY license is used. For any questions, please join the FSFE-sponsored Free RTC mailing list: https://lists.fsfe.org/mailman/listinfo/free-rtc Volunteers needed ================= To make the dev-room and lounge run successfully, we are looking for volunteers: - FOSDEM provides video recording equipment and live streaming, volunteers are needed to assist in this - organizing one or more restaurant bookings (dependending upon number of participants) for the evening of Saturday, 30 January - participation in the Real-Time lounge - helping attract sponsorship funds for the dev-room to pay for the Saturday night dinner and any other expenses - circulating this Call for Participation to other mailing lists FOSDEM is made possible by volunteers and if you have time to contribute, please feel free to get involved through https://volunteers.fosdem.org/ Related events - XMPP and RTC summits ===================================== The XMPP Standards Foundation (XSF) has traditionally held a summit in the days before FOSDEM. There is discussion about a similar summit taking place on 28 and 29 January 2016 http://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Summit_19 - please join the mailing list for details: http://mail.jabber.org/mailman/listinfo/summit We are also considering a more general RTC or telephony summit, potentially on 29 January. (a version of this is located here: http://fosdem.rubybelgium.be/cfp) ## Intro The Ruby Devroom at FOSDEM is an interpreter and runtime focused developer room for the Ruby programming language. Its goal is to host technical content focused around the Ruby language and the numerous open source projects and initiatives which implement, extend and instrument the Ruby language. The time format for presentations in the Ruby devroom is not set in stone, but the ideal duration is around 35-45 minutes with Q&A included. We are open to suggestions for panels and/or more open, moderated, discussions provided the topics proposed fit with the theme of the room. ### Talks/topics we'd like to see Some suggestions on the kinds of topics we would like to see discussed in the Ruby devroom: * The current state of the Ruby language itself * Presentations on the techniques employed by various Ruby virtual machines and interpreters, along with the effectiveness and/or trade-offs of implementing those techniques * Upcoming Ruby language features, and the implementation challenges and/or user benefits that they provide * Tools and practices used to certify Ruby language conformity and evaluate its performance * Costs and Opportunities provided by the multitude of implementations * Ways to extend the language (natively or not) ## Submitting To submit a proposal to present in the Ruby devroom, please submit your proposal on https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM16 ### Steps 1. You *will* need to create an account if you do not already have an account from previous years. 2. Click the "Create event" link 3. Enter the details for your presentation 4. GNU Guile Devroom
by Pjotr Prins 30 Oct '15

30 Oct '15

# GNU Guile devroom call for talks @FOSDEM 2016 For the first time ever, we have a GNU Guile devroom at FOSDEM on January 30, 2016. The call for talk proposals is open! Important members of the GNU Guile and GNU Guix community will attend. We are excited because FOSDEM is one of the most important FOSS conferences and is hosted annually at [Université libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium](https://fosdem.org/2016/practical/transportation/); the devroom will host 80 people. Submissions for talks are due on November 30, 2015. ## Topics GNU Guile is the preferred extension system for the GNU Project which features an implementation of the Scheme programming language, a dialect of Lisp. Especially technical talks are invited on topics concerning GNU Guile and applications that use Guile (such as GNU Guix, Lilypond and Gnucash). In the talks both experienced Guile programmers and newbies should be addressed. FOSDEM is a great opportunity to attract people interested in GNU Guile and Lisp. Examples of (already proposed) talks could be - Guile programming: + functors and monads in Guile + composable continuations in Guile + posix programming in Guile and the FFI - Web frameworks with GNU Guile - GNU Guix: + GNU/Hurd support in Guix + R, Perl, Python and Ruby support in GNU Guix + Reproducible pipelines for Guix + Guix environments (VM, Docker) - Guile and the network: + Software distribution using Gnunet + Paving a path to greater network freedom using Guix and Guile ## Submit talk Feel free to submit your own topic or even run with one of these. The most interesting talks will be selected. Talks are 15 or 30 minutes (including Q&A; please notify in the application your preference) on GNU Guile related projects. Please note that presenting at FOSDEM implies giving permission to be recorded. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Submit your proposal here: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM16 If you submitted a talk to a previous FOSDEM, you should already have an account, so make sure that you log in with your existing account. You should only need to create an account if you have not submitted a talk to FOSDEM in recent years. After you have your account configured (you will receive a confirmation email), create the event, and click on "Show all" in the top right corner to diplay the full form. When submitting your talk make doubly sure to select "GNU Guile devroom" as track, and include the following information: * The title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract of one paragraph * A longer description if you wish to do so * Links to related websites/blogs etc

(I think I used a different email address first, and my email didn't make it through). Imifos, I've got to agree with your contributions here. But to add to all this: http://adainitiative.org/continue-our-work/conference-policies/ links to http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Anti-harassment_policy_resources which is IMHO a must-read for everyone discussing here. It covers all the arguments I've seen here, plus is a good guide for what's needed - and also what isn't. (FYI, thoughtcrime detection drones with tasers aren't required, though some reactions here read like that's what people are afraid of.) "Be excellent to each other!"
