FOSDEM 2019 - Distributions Devroom Call for Participation
by Brian Exelbierd 22 Dec '18

22 Dec '18

The Distributions devroom will take place Sunday 3 February 2019 at FOSDEM, in Brussels, Belgium at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. As more and more workloads are being considered for containerization in the future and are finally landing in virtualized environments today, distributions remain a critical success factor and are more important than ever. Containers, like virtual machines, are not magical and rely on piles of software being assembled in a way that is repeatable, reliable, and functional. This is at the very heart of the problem that distributions have always solved. Each distribution is responsible for building, testing, and releasing software as well as managing the lifecycle of each application in the collection. Additionally, distributions do very important work in ensuring that various versions of upstream software work well together and can co-exist. Distributions are also, often responsible, for "de-vendoring" upstream software so that security fixes can be applied more quickly. We welcome submissions targeted at contributors interested in issues unique to distributions, especially in the following topics: # Topics and Areas of Focus ## Focus Areas - The ways that distribution technologies can be leveraged to allow for easier creation of a multi-verse of artifacts from single source trees. This includes the increasing move toward self-contained applications and providing multiple non-parallel installed versions of software. - Efforts being made in shared environments around Build/Test/Release cycles. - Topics related to the delivery problem as it impacts updates in terms of both size and rollback/reliability are expected to be featured. ## Additional Topic Ideas - Distribution and Community collaborations, eg: how does code flow from developers to end users across communities, ensuring trust and code audibility - Automating building software for redistribution to minimize human involvement, eg: bots that branch and build software, bots that participate as team members extending human involvement - Cross-distribution collaboration on common issues, eg: content distribution, infrastructure, and documentation - Growing distribution communities, eg: onboarding new users, helping new contributors learn community values and technology, increasing contributor technical skills, recognizing and rewarding contribution - Principals of Rolling Releases, Long Term Supported Releases (LTS), Feature gated releases, and calendar releases - Distribution construction, installation, deployment, packaging and content management - Balancing new code and active upstreams verus security updates, back porting and minimization of user breaking changes - Delivering architecture independent software universally across architectures within the confines of distribution systems - Effectively communicating the difference in experience across architectures for developers, packagers, and users - Working with vendors and including them in the community - The future of distributions, emerging trends and evolving user demands from the idea of a platform Ideal submissions are actionable and opinionated. Submissions may be in the form of 25 or 50 minute talks, panel sessions, round-table discussions, or Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions. Dates ------ Submission Deadline: 02-Dec-2018 @ 2359 GMT Acceptance Notification: 7-Dec-2018 Final Schedule Posted: 14-Dec-2018 How to submit -------------- Visit https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19 1.) If you do not have an account, create one here 2.) Click 'Create Event' 3.) Enter your presentation details 4.) Be sure to select the Distributions Devroom track! 5.) Submit What to include --------------- - The title of your submission - A 1-paragraph Abstract - A longer description including the benefit of your talk to your target audience, including a definition of your target audience. - Approximate length / type of submission (talk, BoF, ...) - Links to related websites/blogs/talk material (if any) Administrative Notes ---------------- We will be live-streaming and recording the Distributions Devroom. Presenting at FOSDEM implies permission to record your session and distribute the recording afterwards. All videos will be made available under the standard FOSDEM content license (CC-BY). If you have any questions, feel free to contact the devroom organizers: distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org (https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/distributions-devroom) Cheers! UPDATED Call for Papers ODE DevRoom at FOSDEM
by Italo Vignoli 14 Dec '18

14 Dec '18

FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of Free Software contributors in the world and takes place each year in Brussels (Belgium) at the ULB Campus Solbosch. In 2019, it will be held on Saturday February 2, and Sunday February 3. The Open Document Editors DevRoom is scheduled for Saturday, February 2 (from 10:30AM to 7:00PM, room UB2.147). We are inviting proposals for talks about Open Document Editors or the ODF standard document format, on topics such as code, localization, QA, UX, tools, extensions and adoption-related cases. Please keep in mind that product pitches are not allowed at FOSDEM. The length of talks should be limited to a maximum of 25 minutes, as we would like to have questions after each presentation, and to fit as many presenters as possible in the schedule. Exceptions must be explicitly requested and justified. You may be assigned LESS time than you request. All submissions have to be made in the Pentabarf event planning tool: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM19. While filing your proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a short abstract (one or two paragraphs), some information about yourself (name, bio and photo, but please do remember that your profile might be already stored in Pentabarf). To submit your talk, click on “Create Event”, then make sure to select the “Open Document Editors” devroom as the “Track”. Otherwise, your talk will not be even considered for any devroom at all. If you already have a Pentabarf account from a previous year, even if your talk was not accepted, please reuse it. Create an account if, and only if, you don’t have one from a previous year. If you have any issues with Pentabarf, please contact ode-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org. The deadline is Monday, December 24, 2018. Accepted speakers will be notified by Thursday, December 27, 2018. The schedule will be published on Monday, December 31, 2018. Recording Permission We will record and stream all main tracks, devrooms and lightning talks live. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). If, exceptionally, you believe there is a legitimate reason why your presentation should not be streamed or recorded, you must seek our agreement before submitting it. In the “Submission notes” field, please indicate that you agree to have your presentation recorded and published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). For example: “If my speech is accepted for FOSDEM, I hereby agree to be recorded and to have recordings - including slides and other presentation related documents - published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) 4.0 International License. Sincerely, Name”. -- Italo Vignoli - Marketing & PR email italo.vignoli(a)documentfoundation.org

Volunteer Badges for 2019
by olcbean 14 Dec '18

14 Dec '18

Hi FOSDEM, I am one of the volunteers from last years FOSDEM event. It was a ton of fun and I am really looking forward to volunteering in 2019 again! One of the difficulties I had as a first timer was recognizing fellow volunteers during the event, and no (nick-) names to go by to keep in touch after. I would like to propose a small memorabilia / incentive for the volunteers this year. As an extra to go with the FOSDEM-themed lanyards, I would like to provide laminated badges for all registered volunteers (and the organizers of course). I have access to a laminator and the necessary supplies - the only help I would need is the actual design for the badges. All volunteers registered 2 days prior to the event will have their badges already waiting for them, and there also will be the possibility of filling in blank badges on the spot ;) I think this would be a nice small memorabilia that volunteers like me will really appreciate. Let me know what you think! olcbean

Proposal for presentation at the Ada developer room
by Teissl Julia 11 Dec '18

11 Dec '18

To whom it may concern, I (Julia Teissl) work as a research assistant FH Campus Wien and also studied there. I started with a Bachelor degree in Information Technology and Telecommunication and completed my education with a Master degree in Embedded Systems Engineering. My talk would be about: Autonomous train control system Numerous small villages in Austria have lost their connections to the railway network because it was no longer cost-effective to operate under a regular schedule. To re-establish these connections, FH Campus Wien started the project „autonome, schienengebundene, on-Demand, open-Track Systeme“ AuSoDoTS (Autonomous rail bound on-Demand Open Track systems) project. The project’s objective is to develop a concept for how to safely operate small autonomous trains, without a fixed schedule. Trains are only approaching to stations when a passenger explicitly requests them by pressing a button at the station or using a mobile app. A short track from Liesing at the edge of Vienna to Kaltenleutgeben, a small town in Lower Austria, could be one of the first test locations. As a first approach a small model railway has been built. The model has two purposes. One is to find the optimal placement for passing loops where trains can pass each other, since the connection is mostly single track. The other is to test different scheduling algorithms for on-Demand service. To fulfill the strict safety aspects of a passenger transportation system, the programming language Ada is used and in following versions SPARK will be used as it can be formally verified to be correct then. For more information: https://blog.adacore.com/train-control-using-ada-on-a-raspberry-pi More information about me: I am teaching Ada/SPARK, microcontroller programming, FreeRTOS at FH Campus. For fun I develop synthesizers with STM32F4s and Arduinos and try to explore the world of neuronal networks.[cid:5CCA0DBF-2F72-47CC-A613-C6A578616254@FH-CAMPUSWIEN.LOCAL] Liebe Grüße Julia Teissl > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Julia TEISSL BSc MSc Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin FH Campus Wien Masterstudium Embedded Systems Engineering Favoritenstraße 226, Raum B.3.04 1100 Wien, Austria T: +43 1 606 68 77-2432 F: +43 1 606 68 77-2439 julia.teissl(a)fh-campuswien.ac.at<mailto:julia.teissl@fh-campuswien.ac.at> www.fh-campuswien.ac.at<http://www.fh-campuswien.ac.at> Informationen zum Datenschutz: www.fh-campuswien.ac.at/datenschutzerklaerung
