[CFP] LLVM devroom at FOSDEM 2020
by Kristof Beyls 02 Jan '20

02 Jan '20

CALL FOR PAPERS / PARTICIPATION At FOSDEM 2020, LLVM will again participate with a dedicated devroom, on Saturday February 1st, in Brussels. As possibly the largest European Open Source Conference, FOSDEM attracts more than 600 lectures and over 8000 hackers - many core contributors of the world’s leading open source projects. Complementing the LLVM developer meetings, the devroom at FOSDEM provides a great opportunity for LLVM developers and the wider open source community to get together, connect and discuss. We invite academic, industrial and hobbyist speakers to present their work on developing or using LLVM, Clang, LLDB, Compiler-rt, MLIR, flang, or any of the other technologies in the LLVM project. We are looking for: - Keynote speakers. - Technical presentations (default length of 40 minutes including questions) related to the development of LLVM technologies or use of those technologies in other projects. - Tutorials. - Lightning talks (default length of 5 minutes). - Demos. The deadline for receiving proposals is Sunday November 24th, 2019. Speakers will be notified of acceptance or rejection by December 13th. Please find some advice on what constitutes a good proposal at the end of this CFP. To submit a proposal, please create an account on the FOSDEM interface ( https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account) If you already have an account from previous years, please reuse that. Submit your proposal following https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20, “Create Event”. Please make sure you select "LLVM devroom" as the "Track”. Presentations will be recorded and streamed. Sending your proposal implies giving permission to be recorded. Registration FOSDEM does not require any registration and is free of charge. Organization The mailing list llvm-devroom at lists.fosdem.org can be used to discuss issues of general interest related to the conference organization. Please, do not reply to this email, as it is cross posted to many lists. Financial support There may be a possibility of limited funding to help presenters who could not otherwise attend the conference. If you need funding to be able to present at the meeting, or can help provide sponsorship, please tell us on llvm-devroom at lists.fosdem.org. Guidance on writing a proposal for the LLVM Dev Room This is a guide to help you submit a good proposal and increase your chances of your proposal being accepted. If you have never presented at an LLVM meeting, then do not fear this process. We are actively looking for new speakers who are excited about LLVM and helping grow the community through these educational talks! You do not need to be a long time developer to submit a proposal. General Guidelines: - It should be clear from your abstract what your topic is, who your target audience is, and what are the takeaways for attendees. The program committee does not have time to read 10 page papers for each submission. - Talks about the use of an LLVM technology should include details about how LLVM is used and not only be about the resulting application. - Tutorials on “how to use X” in LLVM (or other subproject) are greatly desired and beneficial to many developers. Entry level topics are encouraged as well. - Typically a few paragraphs are sufficient. Best regards, LLVM @ FOSDEM organisers

FOSDEM is the premier free and open source software event in Europe, taking place in Brussels from 1-2 February at the Université libre de Bruxelles. You can learn more about the conference at https://fosdem.org. The Community DevRoom will take place on Sunday 2nd February 2020. Our goals in running this DevRoom are to: * Connect folks interested in nurturing their communities with one another so they can share knowledge during and long after FOSDEM * Educate those who are primarily software developers on community-oriented topics that are vital in the process of software development, e.g. effective collaboration * Provide concrete advice on dealing with squishy human problems * To unpack preconceived ideas of what community is and the role it plays in human society, free software, and a corporate-dominated world in 2020. We would seek proposals on all aspects of creating and nurturing communities for free software projects. == TALK TOPICS == Here are some topics we are interested in hearing more about this year: 1) Is there any real role for community in corporate software projects? Can you create a healthy and active community while still meeting the needs of your employer? How can you maintain an open dialog with your users and/or contributors when you have the need to keep company business confidential? Is it even possible to build an authentic community around a company-based open source project? Have we completely lost sight of the ideals of community and simply transformed that word to mean “interested sales prospects?” 2) Creating Sustainable Communities With the increased focus on the impact of short-term and self-interested thinking on both our planet and our free software projects, we would like to explore ways to create authentic, valuable, and lasting community in a way that best respects our world and each other. We would like to hear from folks about how to support community building in person in sustainable ways, how to build community effectively online in the YouTube/Instagram era, and how to encourage corporations to participate in community processes in a way that does not simply extract value from contributors. If you have recommendations or case studies on how to make this happen, we very much want to hear from you. We are particularly interested to hear about academic research into FOSS Sustainability and/or commercial endeavors set up to address this topic. 3) Bringing free software to the GitHub generation Those of us who have been in the free and open source software world for a long time remember when the coolest thing you could do was move from CVS to SVN, Slack ended in “ware”, IRC was where you talked to your friends instead of IRL (except now no one talks in IRL anyway, just texts), and Twitter was something that birds did. Here we are in 2020, and clearly things have changed. How can we bring more younger participants into free software communities? How do we teach the importance of free software values in an era where freely-available code is ubiquitous? Will the ethical underpinnings of free software attract millenials and Gen Z to participate in our communities when our free software tends to require lots of free time? We promise we are not cranky old fuddy duddies. Seriously. It’s important to us that the valuable experiences we had in our younger days working in the free software community are available to everyone. And we want to know how to get there. 4) Applying the principles of building free software communities to other endeavors What can the lessons about decentralization, open access, open licensing, and community engagement teach us as we address the great issues of our day? We have left this topic not well defined because we would like people to bring whatever truth they have to the question. Great talks in this category could be anything from “why to never start a business in Silicon Valley” to “working from home is great and keeps C02 out of the air.” Let your imagination take you far - we are excited to hear from you. 5) How can free software protect the vulnerable At a time when some of the best accessibility features are built as proprietary products, at a time when surveillance and predictive policing lead to persecution of dissidents and imprisonment of those who were guilty before proven innocent, how can we use free software to protect the vulnerable? What sort of lobbying efforts would be required to make certain free software - and therefore fully auditable - code becomes a civic requirement? How do we as individuals, and actors at employers, campaign for the protection of vulnerable people - and other living things - as part of our mission of software freedom. 6) Conflict resolution How do we continue working well together when there are conflicts? Is there a difference in how types of conflicts best get resolved, e.g. ”this code is terrible” vs. “we should have a contributor agreement”? We are especially interested in how tos / success stories from projects that have weathered conflict. We are now at 2020 and this issue still comes up semi-daily. Let’s share our collective wisdom on how to make conflict less painful and more productive. Again, these are just suggestions. We welcome proposals on any aspect of community building! == PREPARING YOUR SUBMISSION & DEADLINES ===== LENGTH OF PRESENTATION === We are looking for talk submissions between 30 and 45 minutes in length, including time for Q&A. In general, we are hoping to accept as many talks as possible so we would really appreciate it if you could make all of your remarks in 30 minutes – our DevRoom is only a single day – but if you need longer just let us know. === ANYTHING EXTRA YOU WOULD LIKE US TO KNOW === Beyond giving us your speaker bio and paper abstract, make sure to let us know anything else you’d like to as part of your submission. Some folks like to share their Twitter handles, others like to make sure we can take a look at their GitHub activity history – whatever works for you. We especially welcome videos of you speaking elsewhere, or even just a list of talks you have done previously. First time speakers are, of course, welcome! === SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS === - Submit your talk abstract(s) via FOSDEM’s Pentabarf paper submission system. - Pentabarf Submission URL: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 == KEY DATES == 1. FOSDEM 2020 - Quantum computing devroom CfP
by Tomas Babej 29 Oct '19

29 Oct '19

After very successful inaugural devroom last year, we are happy to announce a call for participation in a developer room dedicated to Quantum Computing for FOSDEM 2020! The developer room will take place at the FOSDEM conferrence in Brussels on Saturday, February 1st 2020. Organization of the room is stewarded by Quantum Open Source Foundation (https://qosf.org) whose mission is to ensure this new emerging computing paradigm is accessible using free and open source technology stack. Submit proposals either using the FOSDEM submission system: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 or using email address: fosdem20(a)qosf.org Submission deadline is Dec 1st, 23.59 UTC. To see schedule of our last FOSDEM devroom event, please see: https://qosf.org/fosdem === Why to participate === Quantum computing is a new emerging field that coming out of the lab and finding its applications in the real world. The space of the open source software for quantum computing is blooming with this trend, with researchers and hardware providers alike investing in creating software infrastructure for this new computing paradigm. With that in mind, the purpose of this devroom is twofold: - to flatten down the learning curve and break perceived barriers that prevent developers from entering the field of quantum software development - to ensure that the field is dominated by high-quality, community driven FOSS open source software, standards and protocols Many of the players have open sourced libraries to build quantum computing circuits and interact with their platforms, both actual hardware and simulators. However, not enough attention is given to building a wider quantum computing community and current trajectory leads to multiple silos, projects that are driven by commercial interest without liberal community driven governance structure. FOSDEM is one of the largest gatherings of open source community in the world, which happens yearly at the ULB Capus Solbosch, Brussels, Belgium. As such, it is an ideal place not only to showcase and discuss new ideas and developments in the space of quantum computing, but also help break down the barriers in adopting quantum computing by software developers. === Submission topics === We welcome submissions that are devoted to the following topics: * Introduction of open source projects in quantum computing * Future directions and roadmaps of existing projects * Use-cases and experiences of using existing open source software projects for quantum computing research and quantum software development * Identification of possible gaps in the space of open source for quantum computing * Discussions about the state of the open source community and possible ways of improving it and other topics that relate to quantum computing software. === Talk formats and instructions === We encourage both talks and workshop formats. We suggest following durations, including questions: * 20 min - lighting talks * 45-60 min - talks * 90-120 min - workshops Note that the talks at FOSDEM are captured (and streamed) under the CC-BY licence. Speakers are hence required to give permission to being recorded. Submit proposals either using the FOSDEM submission system: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 or using email address: fosdem20(a)qosf.org Submission deadline is Dec 1st, 23.59 UTC. Pentabarf instructions: To submit your talk, click on "Create Event" and then select the "Quantum computing" as the "Track". If you have already spoken at FOSDEM previously, please re-use your account. On behalf of the organizational team, Tomas Babej QOSF | qosf.org | qosf.org/fosdem

A question on CFP
by Raymond Paik 29 Oct '19

29 Oct '19

Hi, This is a "newbie" question (last year was the first time I submitted CFPs for FOSDEM)... On penta.fosdem.org, what are the purposes of "Submission notes", "Abstract", and "Full description" fields in the Description tab? I'm trying not to repeat the same information and wasn't sure if all three fields were required. Thanks, Ray

If you do not select a track, then nobody, from any track, will look at your submission! - Provide the title of your talk ("Event title" in the "General" tab). - Provide a description of the subject of the talk and the intended audience (in the "Abstract" field of the "Description" tab) - Provide a rough outline of the talk or goals of the session (a short list of bullet points covering topics that will be discussed) in the "Full description" field in the "Description" tab - Provide an expected length of your talk in the "Duration" field, including discussion. The default duration is 30 minutes. - Slides are NOT required at the moment of submission Please note neither FOSDEM nor the Retrocomputing DevRoom will reimburse any expenses you incur. RECORDING OF TALKS The FOSDEM organizers plan to have live streaming and recording fully working, both for remote/later viewing of talks, and so that people can watch streams in the hallways when rooms are full. This requires speakers to consent to being recorded and streamed. If you plan to be a speaker, please understand that by doing so you implicitly give consent for your talk to be recorded and streamed. The recordings will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. # FOSDEM 2020 - Distribution Devroom Call for Participation The Distributions devroom will take place Sunday 2 February 2020 at FOSDEM, in Brussels, Belgium at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. As more and more workloads are being considered for containerization in the future and are finally landing in virtualized environments today, distributions remain a critical success factor and are more important than ever. Containers, like virtual machines, are not magical and rely on piles of software being assembled in a way that is repeatable, reliable, and functional. This is at the very heart of the problem that distributions have always solved. Each distribution is responsible for building, testing, and releasing software as well as managing the lifecycle of each application in the collection. Additionally, distributions do very important work in ensuring that various versions of upstream software work well together and can co-exist. Distributions are also, often responsible, for "de-vendoring" upstream software so that security fixes can be applied more quickly. We welcome submissions targeted at contributors interested in issues unique to distributions, especially in the following topics: # Topics and Areas of Focus ## Focus Areas - The ways that distribution technologies can be leveraged to allow for easier creation of a multi-verse of artifacts from single source trees. This includes the increasing move toward self-contained applications and providing multiple non-parallel installed versions of software. - Efforts being made in shared environments around Build/Test/Release cycles. - Topics related to the delivery problem as it impacts updates in terms of both size and rollback/reliability are expected to be featured. ## Additional Topic Ideas - Distribution and Community collaborations, eg: how does code flow from developers to end users across communities, ensuring trust and code audibility - Automating building software for redistribution to minimize human involvement, eg: bots that branch and build software, bots that participate as team members extending human involvement - Cross-distribution collaboration on common issues, eg: content distribution, infrastructure, and documentation - Growing distribution communities, eg: onboarding new users, helping new contributors learn community values and technology, increasing contributor technical skills, recognizing and rewarding contribution - Principals of Rolling Releases, Long Term Supported Releases (LTS), Feature gated releases, and calendar releases - Distribution construction, installation, deployment, packaging and content management - Balancing new code and active upstreams verus security updates, back porting and minimization of user breaking changes - Delivering architecture independent software universally across architectures within the confines of distribution systems - Effectively communicating the difference in experience across architectures for developers, packagers, and users - Working with vendors and including them in the community - The future of distributions, emerging trends and evolving user demands from the idea of a platform Ideal submissions are actionable and opinionated. Submissions may be in the form of 25 or 50 minute talks, panel sessions, round-table discussions, or Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions. Dates ------ Submission Deadline: 01-Dec-2019 @ 2359 GMT Acceptance Notification: 6-Dec-2019 Final Schedule Posted: 14-Dec-2019 How to submit -------------- Visit https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 1.) If you do not have an account, create one here 2.) Click 'Create Event' 3.) Enter your presentation details 4.) Be sure to select the Distributions Devroom track! 5.) Submit What to include --------------- - The title of your submission - A 1-paragraph Abstract - A longer description including the benefit of your talk to your target audience, including a definition of your target audience. - Approximate length / type of submission (talk, BoF, ...) - Links to related websites/blogs/talk material (if any) Administrative Notes ---------------- We will be live-streaming and recording the Distributions Devroom. Presenting at FOSDEM implies permission to record your session and distribute the recording afterwards. All videos will be made available under the standard FOSDEM content license (CC-BY).
