GSM BTS at Fosdem 2011?
by Richard Hartmann 12 Jan '11

12 Jan '11

Hi all, are there any plans to establish a GSM network next year? If yes, do we need to bring our own SIM cards? Is there anything I should look for when scavenging them? Would someone who works at a telco or similar be able to grab a few SIM cards (scrubbed clean of personal data, obviously)? Would it even help to have a common pool of assorted SIM cards to hand out to people? Personally, I think it would be awesome if things worked out this time :) Richard

Running a GSM BTS at fosdem ?
by Sylvain Munaut 12 Jan '11

12 Jan '11

Hi, Back in november/december, I made a request to the IBPT for a special temporary GSM licence. I was originally planning to use it in a talk on GSM but my proposal wasn't selected. Since the authorization has now been granted (and paid for), it'd be a waste not to use it The idea would just to have a single BTS running a small demo network with just A4 sheets around pointing to a website for more infos, no stand or anything. Can this be arranged on short notice ? Who should I talk to for details ? Cheers, Sylvain

by Bart Coppens 14 Nov '10

14 Nov '10

FOSDEM is one of the biggest Free and Open Source events. It is held annually in Brussels, Belgium, and attended by around 4000 people. This year we will have a devroom for 2 days dedicated to Cross-Desktop talks and topics. As opposed to previous years, there will be no KDE, or Gnome, or XFCE specific devrooms this year. FOSDEM will be held on the weekend of 5 and 6th February 2011, and the deadline for submissions for papers is Wednesday 22nd December 2010. We're looking for developers, users and contributors to submit talks for inclusion on the program. We are specifically looking for topics that are of interest to the users and developers of all desktop environments. Please submit your proposals to: crossdesktop(a)lists.fosdem.org Please include the following information when submitting a proposal: * Your name * The title of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed with ~250 from other projects) * A short abstract of one to two paragraphs The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 22nd December 2010. Perl @ FOSDEM 2011 - Call for speakers
by Gabor Szabo 14 Nov '10

14 Nov '10

sorry I sent this to the wrong address. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Gabor Szabo <szabgab(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Nov 8, 2010 at 12:10 AM Subject: Perl @ FOSDEM 2011 - Call for speakers To: devrooms(a)fosdem.org FOSDEM is one of the biggest Free and Open Source event held annually in Brussels, Belgium. The expected number of visitors is around 4-5000. Last year there was a Perl booth and a few Perl related talks. This year we are going to have a devroom where we will be presenting a number of Perl related talks. FOSDEM will take place on the 5 - 6th February 2011. The Perl devroom will be on Sunday 6th February from 09:00 to 17:00.. We're looking for speakers to submit talks for inclusion in the program. In our conversations with the FOSDEM visitors last year we found that while many were using Perl or interested in Perl, almost none of them have ever attended a Perl Workshop or a YAPC. Hence this is an opportunity to show the latest developments in the Perl world to a wider audience. A number of topics that might be interesting: * Moose, the Object Oriented system of Perl * Dancer and Mojolicous, the new light-weight web frameworks * New features of Perl (5.10 and 5.12) * How to run a new version of Perl on an older system * Testing Perl code and using Perl for automated testing * Writing games in Perl * Using Perl modules without root access * Database access using Perl * Data mining with Perl * Porting legacy Perl to Modern Perl * Perl 6 Presenting a Perl based software such s a * Content Management System * Bug tracking software * ... Talks can be 15, 30 or 45 min long including (!) 2-3 minutes switching time between talks. Please submit your proposals to: events(a)lists.perlfoundation.org and include the following information: * Your name * The title of your talk (please be descriptive, as titles will be listed together with ~250 talks from other projects) * A short abstract of one or two paragraphs * A short biography introducing yourself * Links to related websites/blogs etc. The deadline for submissions is 20th December 2010. The proposals will be considered by committee. If your proposal has been accepted, you will be informed by email by 27 December 2010. regards Gabor http://perl-ecosystem.org/

LibreOffice at FOSDEM - Call for Papers
by Florian Effenberger 14 Nov '10

14 Nov '10

2011: Brussels, FOSDEM... Your first chance ever to give a talk for LibreOffice at this great open source event... obviously you don't want to miss this! Do you want to share your experience in starting to hack the code, or tell about the tweaks in your build environment, talk about the code changes you have done or those that you prepare, or do you want to share insight on your QA work? Simply submit your proposal at our wiki: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Events/Fosdem2011 We really like you to share in the way that fits you best, be it 5, 10 or up to 30 minutes :-) It might well be that we'll have to choose between the various proposals, after all FOSDEM is only two days ;-) So please give a clear description of your talk, goals and target audience. For details, see the outline that is provided at the wiki. FOSDEM is a free conference to attend, and we will try to seek sponsorship. But funding is limited, so please only request it if you cannot attend otherwise, and we will try our best to support you.
