[CFP] LLVM devroom at FOSDEM 2020
by Kristof Beyls 02 Jan '20

02 Jan '20

CALL FOR PAPERS / PARTICIPATION At FOSDEM 2020, LLVM will again participate with a dedicated devroom, on Saturday February 1st, in Brussels. As possibly the largest European Open Source Conference, FOSDEM attracts more than 600 lectures and over 8000 hackers - many core contributors of the world’s leading open source projects. Complementing the LLVM developer meetings, the devroom at FOSDEM provides a great opportunity for LLVM developers and the wider open source community to get together, connect and discuss. We invite academic, industrial and hobbyist speakers to present their work on developing or using LLVM, Clang, LLDB, Compiler-rt, MLIR, flang, or any of the other technologies in the LLVM project. We are looking for: - Keynote speakers. - Technical presentations (default length of 40 minutes including questions) related to the development of LLVM technologies or use of those technologies in other projects. - Tutorials. - Lightning talks (default length of 5 minutes). - Demos. The deadline for receiving proposals is Sunday November 24th, 2019. Speakers will be notified of acceptance or rejection by December 13th. Please find some advice on what constitutes a good proposal at the end of this CFP. To submit a proposal, please create an account on the FOSDEM interface ( https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account) If you already have an account from previous years, please reuse that. Submit your proposal following https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20, “Create Event”. Please make sure you select "LLVM devroom" as the "Track”. Presentations will be recorded and streamed. Sending your proposal implies giving permission to be recorded. Registration FOSDEM does not require any registration and is free of charge. Organization The mailing list llvm-devroom at lists.fosdem.org can be used to discuss issues of general interest related to the conference organization. Please, do not reply to this email, as it is cross posted to many lists. Financial support There may be a possibility of limited funding to help presenters who could not otherwise attend the conference. If you need funding to be able to present at the meeting, or can help provide sponsorship, please tell us on llvm-devroom at lists.fosdem.org. Guidance on writing a proposal for the LLVM Dev Room This is a guide to help you submit a good proposal and increase your chances of your proposal being accepted. If you have never presented at an LLVM meeting, then do not fear this process. We are actively looking for new speakers who are excited about LLVM and helping grow the community through these educational talks! You do not need to be a long time developer to submit a proposal. General Guidelines: - It should be clear from your abstract what your topic is, who your target audience is, and what are the takeaways for attendees. The program committee does not have time to read 10 page papers for each submission. - Talks about the use of an LLVM technology should include details about how LLVM is used and not only be about the resulting application. - Tutorials on “how to use X” in LLVM (or other subproject) are greatly desired and beneficial to many developers. Entry level topics are encouraged as well. - Typically a few paragraphs are sufficient. Best regards, LLVM @ FOSDEM organisers

Hello Marcin, All calls for participation have been finished long time ago. FOSDEM is full to the brim, including spare slots. With your fringe application, you applied for some exposure on the fosdem.org website as an event roughly in a space similar to FOSDEM. I don't think it's realistic to go beyond that right now... Kind regards, Mark Op di 31 dec. 2019 om 10:30 schreef Marcin Jakubowski <marcin(a)opensourceecology.org>: > > Thanks, Mark and Luke, > > Posted at The Fringe - thanks for the intro. The dates are January 25 - February 2, 2020. > > It would be interesting to see how this could work. As our instructor will be tied up at the actual Open Source Microfactory event venue in Ghent - not sure how we can send somebody to the FOSDEM location. The way it works is that you get the Dev Kit and do all the builds along the way. I could see remote participation where people at the FOSDEM site get kits and collaborate with us over video. > > But please look at the details on the website - https://www.opensourceecology.org/steam-camp-january-2020/ - we are actively seeking instructors to run the Micofactory events in multiple locations - so that we leverage the promise of true and open collaborative design for real products. So if anyone is in the slight know of open hardware - or wants to actually learn it and then teach it - this is a great chance to get involves as an instructor. We all collaborate on teaching each other. And maybe next time I can speak at FOSDEM, would love to get more poeple into the open hardware. I'll be running the event in Texas this time - 3 locations are happening simulataneously. > > Thanks, > Marcin > > On Tue, Dec 31, 2019 at 2:57 AM Luke Kenneth Casson Leighton <lkcl(a)lkcl.net> wrote: >> >> mark that's fantastic advice, great idea, forgot about the fringe, really appreciated, i will leave it with marcin. >> >> best, >> >> l. >> >> On Tuesday, December 31, 2019, Mark Van den Borre <mark(a)fosdem.org> wrote: >>> >>> Hello Luke, Marcin, Alasdair, lists, >>> >>> IMHO, the realistic option is https://www.fosdem.org/2020/fringe/ . >>> Apply for a spot on that list through >>> https://submission.fosdem.org/submission/fringe . >>> >>> Kind regards, >>> >>> Mark >>> FOSDEM vzw >>> >>> Op di 31 dec. 2019 om 09:42 schreef Luke Kenneth Casson Leighton >>> <lkcl(a)lkcl.net>: >>> > >>> > apologies for the cross-list post, the topic is very likely to be of direct or indirect interest, please do share elsewhere, however for questions please do reach out directly to Marcin from OSE rather than crosspost replies! >>> > >>> > the OpenSourceEcology Project is running a hands-on real-time collaboration and training course for 9 days that happens to have one of its camps in Ghent, Belgium, only around an hour by train away from FOSDEM and running up to overlap with FOSDEM only on its last 2 days, Feb 1st and 2nd, 2020. >>> > >>> > https://www.opensourceecology.org/steam-camp-january-2020/ >>> > >>> > Marcin's Ted Talk is here: >>> > https://www.ted.com/talks/marcin_jakubowski_open_sourced_blueprints_for_civ… >>> > >>> > it is the beginning of a practical real-world bootstrap process for a modern civilisation and actually uses and puts into use everything that we love about FOSS and FOSH. >>> > >>> > participants will get to actually *make* a 3D Printer, a CNC milling machine, then use those to fabricate an Arduino PCB which... you get the idea. a battery operated welder will also be one of the hands-on projects. >>> > >>> > Alasdair, an idea just occurred to me: can we discuss privately, they are doing "remote" collaboration: is there room / time for OSE to book a workshop by remote link, for two reasons: one in case FOSDEM attendees are interested to see what is going on, but secondly, if anyone who attends STEAM would like to keep in touch whilst attending FOSDEM? Accepted Talks for the FOSDEM Community DevRoom
by Leslie Hawthorn 24 Dec '19

24 Dec '19

Hello everyone, == tl;dr == Accepted talks for the FOSDEM 2020 Community DevRoom at the end of this message, scroll down for "just the facts." == In more detail == We had hoped to complete the online schedule for the FOSDEM Community DevRoom late last week, but have not had the opportunity to do so as we are still waiting on confirmations from a few speakers. Nonetheless, we wanted to give folks who were waiting to hear about the status of their proposal an update. Please note that the schedule will be live and updated in Pentabarf so it published to the FOSDEM website [0]; this email is just for reference for those who may find it useful. For those whose proposals were not accepted, we are sorry we were not able to welcome you as presenters this year. We had a record 78 proposals and only had time slots for 18 talks, so many excellent talks will not be airing in the DevRoom. We still hope that all of our would be speakers will feel welcomed to join us in the DevRoom. We will once again be offering all day community snacks and chocolate to all of our attendees. Last but not least, the DevRoom program committee is very proud that we once again selected all of the sessions via blind reviews this year, which we started doing last year. If you are interested in learning more about how we do our blind reviews, you can find a little bit of information here in a blog post [1] written by Laura Czajowski and yours truly. We would like to extend our deepest thanks to everyone who proposed a talk and our stalwart Program Committee team [2] for their hard work to select this year's round of talks. We look forward to seeing everyone at FOSDEM! == Accepted Proposals == * Applying Open Culture Practices across Distributed Teams-- Katrina Novakovic * Organizing Open Source for Cities Adapting the Open Source Program Office -- Jacob Green * The next generation of contributors is not on IRC: Discussing communication channels for inclusive open source communities -- Matthew Broberg * The Ethics of Open Source A Critical Reflection -- Don Goodman-Wilson * Engineers, Call Your Policy People! FOSDEM 2020 - Ada Developer Room - Sat 1 Feb 2020 - Brussels
by Dirk.Craeynest＠cs.kuleuven.be 22 Dec '19

22 Dec '19

----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ada-Belgium is pleased to announce its 10th Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2020 Ada at the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting on Saturday 1 February 2020 Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Solbosch Campus, Room AW1.125 Avenue Franklin D. Roosevelt Laan 50, B-1050 Brussels, Belgium Organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/20/200201-fosdem.html fosdem.org/2020/schedule/track/ada ----------------------------------------------------------------------- *** General Information FOSDEM, the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. The 2020 edition takes place on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 February. It is free to attend and no registration is necessary. In this edition, Ada-Belgium organizes once more a series of presentations related to the Ada Programming Language and Free or Open Software in a s.c. Developer Room. The "Ada DevRoom" at FOSDEM 2020 is held on the first day of the event, Saturday 1 February 2020. This year FOSDEM has a total of 13 Ada-related presentations by 12 authors from 8 countries! A mini-poster about the Ada DevRoom [1], as well as a one-page Call for Participation for the Ada DevRoom [2] is available; they can be used to help announce the event, and to give an idea about its scope. [1] www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/20/200201-fosdem-cfpart-poster.… [2] www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/20/200201-fosdem-cfpart-a4.pdf *** Ada Programming Language and Technology Ada is a general-purpose programming language originally designed for safety- and mission-critical software engineering. It is used extensively in air traffic control, rail transportation, aerospace, nuclear, financial services, medical devices, etc. It is also perfectly suited for open source development. Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is ever increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The latest Ada language definition was updated early 2016. Work on new features is ongoing, such as improved support for fine-grained parallelism, and will result in a new Ada standard scheduled for 2021. Ada-related technology such as SPARK provides a solution for the safety and security aspects stated above. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including for small and recent platforms. Interest in Ada keeps further increasing, also in the open source community, and many exciting projects have been started. The Ada DevRoom aims to present the facilities offered by the Ada language (such as for object-oriented, multicore, or embedded programming) as well as some of the many exciting tools and projects using Ada. FOSDEM is an ideal fit for an Ada Developer Room. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada technology can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. *** Video/Volunteers This year as well, audio/video equipment and network facilities are provided by the FOSDEM organizers, to enable recording and live streaming all DevRoom presentations. Volunteers "man" that equipment during the day. After postprocessing the recordings, links to them are made available via the "More information" entry for each presentation. Additional volunteers to help with various logistic issues during the day are needed as well, such as monitoring room overflow and refusing entry when the room is too full, defragmenting the room in between presentations, helping speakers with microphone adjustments, monitoring the timeslots and warning speakers when they have to start or when they risk running out of time, as well as various practical issues that need to be handled ASAP when they occur. If you'd like to help, please get in touch (see below). *** Ada Developer Room Presentations (room: AW1.125, 76 seats) The presentations in the Ada DevRoom start after the opening FOSDEM keynotes. The program runs from 10:30 to 19:00. 10:00-10:30 - Arrival & Informal Discussions Feel free to arrive early, to start the day with some informal discussions while the set-up of the DevRoom is finished. 10:30-10:35 - Welcome to the Ada DevRoom by Dirk Craeynest - Ada-Belgium Welcome to the Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2020, which is organized by Ada-Belgium in cooperation with Ada-Europe. Ada-Belgium and Ada-Europe are non-profit organizations set up to promote the use of the Ada programming language and related technology, and to disseminate knowledge and experience into academia, research and industry in Belgium and Europe, resp. Ada-Europe has member-organizations, such as Ada-Belgium, in various countries, and direct members in many other countries. 10:35-11:20 - An Introduction to Ada for Beginning and Experienced Programmers - by Jean-Pierre Rosen - Adalog, France An overview of the main features of the Ada language, with special emphasis on those features that make it especially attractive for free software development. Ada is a feature-rich language, but what really makes Ada stand-out is that the features are nicely integrated towards serving the goals of software engineering. If you prefer to spend your time on designing elegant solutions rather than on low-level debugging, if you think that software should not fail, if you like to build programs from readily available components that you can trust, you should really consider Ada! 11:30-11:50 - HAC: the Compiler which will Never Become Big by Gautier de Montmollin - Ada-Switzerland In the Ada world, we are surrounded by impressive and professional tools that can handle large and complex projects. Did you ever dream of a tiny, incomplete but compatible system to play with? Are you too impatient, for developing small pieces of code, for long compile-bind-link-run cycles? Are you a beginner intimidated by project files and sophisticated tools? Then HAC (the HAC Ada Compiler, or the Hello-world Ada Compiler) is for you. HAC is a revival of the SmallAda project, which supported the "Pascal subset" plus tasking. 12:00-12:50 - Tracking Performance of a Big Application from Dev to Ops by Philippe Waroquiers - Eurocontrol, Belgium This talk describes how performance aspects of a big Air Traffic Flow Management mission critical application are tracked from development to operations. Tracking performance is needed when new functionality is added, to balance the additional services versus the resource increase needed. Measuring and tracking performance is also critical to ensure a new release can cope with the current or expected load. We will discuss various aspects such as which tools and techniques are used for performance tracking and measurements, what are the traps and pitfalls encountered for these activities. The application in question is using Ada, but most of the items discussed are not particularly Ada related. 13:00-13:20 - Cappulada: What we've Learned by Johannes Kliemann - Componolit, Germany Last year I presented Cappulada, a C++ binding generator for Ada that intended to overcome the shortcomings of existing solutions and to provide usable bindings even for complex C++ code. This year I want to show our conclusions on why automatic bindings between C++ and Ada are hard (if not impossible) and where existing solutions (including our own) fail. 13:30-13:50 - Programming ROS2 Robots with RCLAda - by Alejandro R. Mosteo - Centro Universitario de la Defensa, Spain The Robot Operating System (ROS) is one of the chief frameworks for service robotics research and development. The next iteration of this framework, ROS2, aims to improve critical shortcomings of its predecessor like deterministic memory allocation and real-time characteristics. RCLAda is a binding to the ROS2 framework that enables the programming of ROS2 nodes in pure Ada with seamless integration into the ROS2 workflow. 14:00-14:50 - Live Demo of Ada's Distribution Features by Jean-Pierre Rosen - Adalog, France Ada incorporates in its standard a model for distributed execution. It is an abstract model that does not depend on a particular kind of network or any other communication mean, and that preserves full typing control across partitions. This presentation briefly exposes the principles of Ada's distribution model, then shows the possibilities with life demos across different machines and operating systems. 15:00-15:20 - Writing Shared Memory Parallel Programs in Ada - by Jan Verschelde - University of Illinois at Chicago, USA Multitasked Newton's Method for Power Series Tasks in Ada are effective to speed up computations on multicore processors. In writing parallel programs we determine the granularity of the parallelism with respect to the memory management. We have to decide on the size of each job, the mapping of the jobs to the tasks, and on the location of the input and output data for each job. A multitasked Newton's method will show the effectiveness of Ada to speed up the computation of power series. This application belongs to the free and open source package PHCpack, a package to solve polynomial systems by polynomial homotopy continuation. 15:30-15:50 - Spunky: a Genode Kernel in Ada/SPARK by Martin Stein - Genode Labs, Germany The Genode OS framework is an open-source tool kit for building highly secure component-based operating systems scaling from embedded devices to dynamic desktop systems. It runs on a variety of microkernels like SeL4, NOVA, and Fiasco OC as well as on Linux and the Muen SK. But the project also features its own microkernel named "base-hw" written in C++ like most of the Genode framework. Spunky is a pet project of mine. Simply put it's an approach to re-implement the design of the "base-hw" kernel first in Ada and later in SPARK with the ultimate goal to prove its correctness. It is also an opportunity to learn how Genode can benefit from Ada and SPARK in general and promote the use of safety-oriented languages in the project. 16:00-16:50 - Alire: Ada Has a Package Manager - by Alejandro R. Mosteo - Centro Universitario de la Defensa, Spain, Pierre-Marie de Rodat and Fabien Chouteau - AdaCore, France Alire (Ada LIbrary REpository) is a package manager project for the Ada/SPARK community. The goal of a package manager is to facilitate collaboration within the community and to lower the barrier of entry for beginners. In this talk we will present the Alire project, what it can do for you and how you can contribute and give more visibility to your Ada/SPARK projects. We will also provide a tutorial to show how to use Alire to create a library and then publish it for others to use. 17:00-17:20 - Protect Sensitive Data with Ada Keystore by Stephane Carrez - Twinlife, France Storing passwords and secret configuration is a challenge for an application. Ada Keystore is a library that stores arbitrary content by encrypting them in secure keystore (AES-256, HMAC-256). The talk presents the project and shows how to use the Ada Keystore library to get or store secret information in a secure manner. The presentation explains how the Ada features such as types, protected types, tasks, pre/post conditions have helped during the development of this project. 17:30-17:50 - EUgen: a European Project Proposal Generator by Riccardo Bernardini - University of Udine, Italy Whoever wrote a research project proposal knows how much unnerving it can be. The actual project description (made of work packages, tasks, deliverable items, ...) has lots of redundancies and cross-references that makes its coherency as frail as a house of cards. For example, if the duration of a task is changed most probably you'll need to update the effort in person-months of the task and of the including work package; you must update the start date of depending tasks and the deliver date of any deliverable items; most probably also the WP efforts and length need update too; not to mention the need of updating all the summary tables (summary of efforts, deliverable, ..) and the GANTT too. Any small changes is likely to start a ripple of updates and the probability of forgetting something and getting an incoherent project description is large. Given the harsh competition in project funding, if your project is incoherent the probability of getting funded is nil. One day I got sick of this state of affair and I wrote my own project generator: 10k lines of Ada code that reads a non-redundant project description from a simple-format text file and produces a set of files ready to be imported in the proposal, GANNT chart included. The user can specify dependences between different items (e.g., this deliverable is produced at the end of this task, this milestone is reached when this deliverable is available, this task must begin after this other task...) and the program automatically computes all the dates. Both input parser and output processors are implemented using a plugin structure that makes it easy to write new parsers to read different formats or new output processors to produce output in different formats. Currently a parser for a simple ad-hoc format and an output processor that produces LaTeX files are provided; a new processor based on the template expander *protypo* is currently being implemented. Did I eat my own dog food? Well, yes, I did. I used it to write a proposal (still under evaluation) and it served me well. 18:00-18:20 - On Rapid Application Development in Ada by Tomasz Maluszycki - Poland In the Ada world we typically write mission critical software that just has to work, but in a way one could argue that a lot more software is mission critical than is usually admitted. What does it take to actually perform rapid application development in any language? Can we do it in Ada and why would we do so? A quick look into some language features that can be [ab]used for enabling quick development of 'just a prototype' - which, as practice shows is often deployed into production, usually without proper quality controls and predictable outcome. 18:30-18:50 - Ada-TOML: a TOML Parser for Ada by Pierre-Marie de Rodat AdaCore, France The world of generic structured data formats is full of contenders: the mighty XML, the swift JSON, the awesome YAML, ... Alas, there is no silver bullet: XML is very verbose, JSON is not convenient for humans to write, YAML is known to be hard to parse, and so on. TOML is yet another format whose goal is to be a good configuration language: obvious semantics, convenient to write and easy to parse in general-purpose programming languages. In this talk, I'll shortly describe the TOML format and show a few use cases in the real world. I'll then present the ada-toml library itself: its high-level architecture and examples. 18:50-19:00 - Informal Discussions & Closing Informal discussion on ideas and proposals for future events. *** More information on Ada Developer Room Speakers bios, pointers to relevant information, links to corresponding FOSDEM pages, etc., are available on the Ada-Belgium site at www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/20/200201-fosdem.html We invite you to attend some or all of the presentations: they will be given in English. Everybody interested can attend FOSDEM 2020; no registration is necessary. We hope to see many of you there! FOSDEM Hardware Enablement Devroom: call for speakers.
by Luc Verhaegen 10 Dec '19

10 Dec '19

Hi, At FOSDEM on sunday the 2nd of february 2020, there will be another hardware enablement DevRoom. URL: https://fosdem.org/2020/ This devroom covers topics related to hardware support and enablement with free software. It includes the following topics: * peripheral/controller firmwares * hw support and drivers in bootloaders * kernel drivers and hardware interfaces * hardware-related adaptation in operating systems * tools for firmware flashing * tools for low-level development FOSDEM is very much an open source community event, please refrain from turning in a talk that is meant to be purely corporate or a product commercial. Also, this is a highly technical devroom on a conference aimed at developers and advanced users, so only submit a talk on a subject you actually are involved with. Finally, this devrooms focus is the technical aspects of the hardware and its enablement in free projects, rather than the specific applications and use cases that benefit from it. With the return of the Embedded and Automotive DevRoom, we have the ability to schedule full hour talks again, and to go in-depth. If you however only need half an hour, then this is of course also possible. Talk Submission: The venerable pentabarf system will once again be used for talk submission. https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 When in pentabarf, spend some time on the abstract and description, for both the event and the speaker. The abstract should be a shortened description, and the event abstract will sometimes even be printed directly in the booklet. BUT, on the website the abstract is immediately followed by the full description. If your abstract is fully descriptive, while terse, you might get away with just the abstract. As soon as your talk is scheduled by the devroom managers, you can see the result of your handiwork on the main website. Please re-use your old pentabarf account instead of creating a new one: lost password: https://penta.fosdem.org/user/forgot_password Talks are either 50 minutes or 20 minutes long, plus 5 minutes for questions. All talks will be recorded, and will be streamed out live, and will later be made available as CC-BY, sometimes minutes after your talk has finished. As for deadlines, the fosdem organizers want to have a finished schedule by the 15th of december, but do not count on that deadline, there are only a limited number of slots available. Given my belatedness in sending out this CFP, i might get a few more days if i am really really nice to the core FOSDEM organizers, but again, do not count on that (extra hugs only go so far when you're built like i am). On your personal page: * General: * First and last name * Nickname * Image * Contact: * email address * mobile number (this is a very hard requirement as there will be no other reliable form of emergency communication on the day) * Description: * Abstract * Description Create an event: * On the General page: * Event title * Event subtitle. * Track: Hardware Enablement Devroom * Event type: Lecture (talk) or Meeting (BoF) * Persons: * Add yourself as speaker. * Description: * Abstract: * Full Description * Schedule: * select your preferred talk length, either 55 or 25 minutes. * Links: * Add relevant links. The mobile phone number is the hardest requirement, so you can be contacted on-the-day when something comes up. Speakers will all receive my mobile number in return. Neither email nor phonenumber are publicy visible, nor will this information be used for anything outside of devroom organization. After your talk has been scheduled, i usually only send out a single email with some organizational details in the days before the event. Everything else can be ignored or will be filled in by me or the FOSDEM organizers. I will be keeping a keen eye on your submissions and will come back with further questions or make small fixes as needed. Feel free to poke me with any questions or anything, both on irc (libv@freenode) and on email (hardware-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org) That's about it. Hope to see you all at FOSDEM :) Luc Verhaegen.

FOSDEM is the premier free and open source software event in Europe, taking place in Brussels from 1-2 February at the Université libre de Bruxelles. You can learn more about the conference at https://fosdem.org. The Community DevRoom will take place on Sunday 2nd February 2020. Our goals in running this DevRoom are to: * Connect folks interested in nurturing their communities with one another so they can share knowledge during and long after FOSDEM * Educate those who are primarily software developers on community-oriented topics that are vital in the process of software development, e.g. effective collaboration * Provide concrete advice on dealing with squishy human problems * To unpack preconceived ideas of what community is and the role it plays in human society, free software, and a corporate-dominated world in 2020. We would seek proposals on all aspects of creating and nurturing communities for free software projects. == TALK TOPICS == Here are some topics we are interested in hearing more about this year: 1) Is there any real role for community in corporate software projects? Can you create a healthy and active community while still meeting the needs of your employer? How can you maintain an open dialog with your users and/or contributors when you have the need to keep company business confidential? Is it even possible to build an authentic community around a company-based open source project? Have we completely lost sight of the ideals of community and simply transformed that word to mean “interested sales prospects?” 2) Creating Sustainable Communities With the increased focus on the impact of short-term and self-interested thinking on both our planet and our free software projects, we would like to explore ways to create authentic, valuable, and lasting community in a way that best respects our world and each other. We would like to hear from folks about how to support community building in person in sustainable ways, how to build community effectively online in the YouTube/Instagram era, and how to encourage corporations to participate in community processes in a way that does not simply extract value from contributors. If you have recommendations or case studies on how to make this happen, we very much want to hear from you. We are particularly interested to hear about academic research into FOSS Sustainability and/or commercial endeavors set up to address this topic. 3) Bringing free software to the GitHub generation Those of us who have been in the free and open source software world for a long time remember when the coolest thing you could do was move from CVS to SVN, Slack ended in “ware”, IRC was where you talked to your friends instead of IRL (except now no one talks in IRL anyway, just texts), and Twitter was something that birds did. Here we are in 2020, and clearly things have changed. How can we bring more younger participants into free software communities? How do we teach the importance of free software values in an era where freely-available code is ubiquitous? Will the ethical underpinnings of free software attract millenials and Gen Z to participate in our communities when our free software tends to require lots of free time? We promise we are not cranky old fuddy duddies. Seriously. It’s important to us that the valuable experiences we had in our younger days working in the free software community are available to everyone. And we want to know how to get there. 4) Applying the principles of building free software communities to other endeavors What can the lessons about decentralization, open access, open licensing, and community engagement teach us as we address the great issues of our day? We have left this topic not well defined because we would like people to bring whatever truth they have to the question. Great talks in this category could be anything from “why to never start a business in Silicon Valley” to “working from home is great and keeps C02 out of the air.” Let your imagination take you far - we are excited to hear from you. 5) How can free software protect the vulnerable At a time when some of the best accessibility features are built as proprietary products, at a time when surveillance and predictive policing lead to persecution of dissidents and imprisonment of those who were guilty before proven innocent, how can we use free software to protect the vulnerable? What sort of lobbying efforts would be required to make certain free software - and therefore fully auditable - code becomes a civic requirement? How do we as individuals, and actors at employers, campaign for the protection of vulnerable people - and other living things - as part of our mission of software freedom. 6) Conflict resolution How do we continue working well together when there are conflicts? Is there a difference in how types of conflicts best get resolved, e.g. ”this code is terrible” vs. “we should have a contributor agreement”? We are especially interested in how tos / success stories from projects that have weathered conflict. We are now at 2020 and this issue still comes up semi-daily. Let’s share our collective wisdom on how to make conflict less painful and more productive. Again, these are just suggestions. We welcome proposals on any aspect of community building! == PREPARING YOUR SUBMISSION & DEADLINES ===== LENGTH OF PRESENTATION === We are looking for talk submissions between 30 and 45 minutes in length, including time for Q&A. In general, we are hoping to accept as many talks as possible so we would really appreciate it if you could make all of your remarks in 30 minutes – our DevRoom is only a single day – but if you need longer just let us know. === ANYTHING EXTRA YOU WOULD LIKE US TO KNOW === Beyond giving us your speaker bio and paper abstract, make sure to let us know anything else you’d like to as part of your submission. Some folks like to share their Twitter handles, others like to make sure we can take a look at their GitHub activity history – whatever works for you. We especially welcome videos of you speaking elsewhere, or even just a list of talks you have done previously. First time speakers are, of course, welcome! === SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS === - Submit your talk abstract(s) via FOSDEM’s Pentabarf paper submission system. - Pentabarf Submission URL: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM20 == KEY DATES == 1.
