encouraging diversity
by Daniel Pocock 30 Dec '15

It is all very well to talk about the Code of Conduct and negative situations, but what about approaching things from the other direction, creating positive situations? Does FOSDEM have any policies, resources or budget to actively encourage participation from people who are not white males, for example, to pay travel grants for female speakers? Does anybody keep track of any third-party sources of funding that could be helpful for bringing speakers and participants from groups that are under-represented? I've heard that Google offers some funding for example[1] and it would be good to encourage women to apply for this. Some other ideas that come to mind: - Offering some sort of public speaking seminar, aimed mainly at people from such groups who haven't had a lot of experience, on the Friday before FOSDEM. - Pairing first time speakers with an experienced mentor some time ahead of the event. - Offering some kind of reward to the dev-room that does the most to encourage diversity (e.g. giving the dev-room a guaranteed place or bigger room for 2017 or giving the dev-room managers input on a main-track selection in the following year) Regards, Daniel 1. https://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/edu/scholarships/google-travel-and-confer…

Daniel, The ham-radio info booth of 2015 was the result of the devroom gnuradio/software defined radio of 2014 where we had a number of people saying "concidering the audience for this devroom, why not try to promote ham-radio a little bit while we are there". So that is why we where in the building where that devroom was held. But, of course, as ham-radio is all about communication, signal-processing and with some homebrew electronics thrown in, you could probably link it to multiple devrooms at FOSDEM. But feel free to make a little bit of publicity for our infobooth / demonstrations in your corner of FOSDEM :-) Cheerio! Kr. Bonne. Call for Participation: Software Defined Radio Devroom at FOSDEM 2016
by Martin Braun 04 Dec '15

04 Dec '15

Dear friends and colleagues, next year's FOSDEM (the free and open source developer's meeting in Brussels, Europe) will, once again, feature a track on Software Defined Radio. Therefore, we invite developers and users from the free software radio community to join us for this track and present your talks or demos. Software Radio has become an important tool to allow anyone access the EM spectrum. Using free software radio libraries and applications and cheap hardware, anyone can now start hacking on wireless communications, remote sensing, radar or other applications. At FOSDEM, we hope to network all these projects and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward and get more people involved. The track's web site resides at: http://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/gnuradio/wiki/FOSDEM Here, we will publish updates and announcements. The final schedule will be available through Pentabarf and the official FOSDEM website. ** Submit your presentations To suggest a talk, go to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM16 and follow the instructions (you need an account, but can use your account from last year if you have one). You need to create an 'Event'; make sure it's in the Software Defined Radio track! Lengths aren't fixed, but give a realistic estimate and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). Also, don't forget to include time for Q&A. Typical slot lengths would be 30 Minutes including QA. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an open source conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations. Of course, we like nitty-gritty technical stuff. We will reserve time for interactiveness, it won't all be talks. ** Important Dates FOSDEM is January 30th & 31st 2016. * December 4th 2015: Submission Deadline * December 18th 2016: Announcement of final schedule * January 31st 2016: SDR Track (Sunday) ** Steering Committee The track committee consists of: * Philipp Balllister (OpenEmbedded / OpenSDR) * Martin Braun (GNU Radio) * Sylvain Munaut (OsmoCom) Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. Martin

Lightning talks
by Andrea Grandi 29 Nov '15

29 Nov '15

Hi everyone, I was looking in particular at the Python CFP page for FOSDEM 2016 http://python-fosdem.org/ <http://python-fosdem.org/> and I noticed that there isn’t any mention of lightning talks. Looking at the previous year, many tracks had this particular format available and personally I would be interested in giving a talk about Python/Django but that could never fit in a 30 minutes slot. I personally appreciate a lot this kind of talks because in few words I can know about something interesting. Is it something that will be added later or have you decided not to have this kind of talks in 2016? Thank you so much, cheers. Virt & IaaS Devroom CFP Extension, Speaker Mentoring, CoC
by Mikey Ariel 23 Nov '15

23 Nov '15

The CFP for the Virtualization & IaaS devroom is in full swing, and we'd like to share a few updates with you: ------------------------- Speaker Mentoring Program ------------------------- As a part of the rising efforts to grow our communities and encourage a diverse and inclusive conference ecosystem, we're happy to announce that we'll be offering mentoring for newcomer speakers. Our mentors can help you with tasks such as reviewing your abstract, reviewing your presentation outline or slides, or practicing your talk with you. You may apply to the mentoring program as a newcomer speaker if you: * Never presented before or * Presented only lightning talks or * Presented full-length talks at small meetups (<50 ppl) Submission guidelines: * Mentored presentations will have 25-minute slots, where 20 minutes will include the presentation and 5 minutes will be reserved for questions. * The number of newcomer session slots is limited, so we will probably not be able to accept all applications. * You must submit your talk and abstract to apply for the mentoring program, our mentors are volunteering their time and will happily provide feedback but won't write your presentation for you! If you are experiencing problems with Pentabarf, the proposal submission interface, or have other questions, you can email iaas-virt-devroom at lists.fosdem.org and we will try to help you. How to apply: * Follow the same procedure to submit an abstract in Pentabarf as standard sessions. Instructions can be found in our original CFP announcement: http://community.redhat.com/blog/2015/10/call-for-proposals-fosdem16-virtua… * In addition to agreeing to video recording and confirming that you can attend FOSDEM in case your session is accepted, please write "speaker mentoring program application" in the "Submission notes" field, and list any prior speaking experience or other relevant information for your application. Call for mentors! Interested in mentoring newcomer speakers? We'd love to have your help! Please email iaas-virt-devroom at lists.fosdem.org with a short speaker bio and any specific fields of expertise (for example, KVM, OpenStack, storage, etc) so that we can match you with a newcomer speaker from a similar field. Estimated time investment can be as low as a 5-10 hours in total, usually distributed weekly or bi-weekly. Never mentored a newcomer speaker but interested to try? Our mentoring program coordinator will be happy to answer your questions and give you tips on how to optimize the mentoring process. Email us and we'll be happy to answer your questions! ------------------------- CFP Deadline Extension ------------------------- To help accommodate the newcomer speaker proposals, we have decided to extend the deadline for submitting proposals by one week. The new deadline is **TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8 @ midnight CET**. ------------------------- Code of Conduct ------------------------- Following the release of the updated code of conduct for FOSDEM[1], we'd like to remind all speakers and attendees that all of the presentations and discussions in our devroom are held under the guidelines set in the CoC and we expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC at all times. If you submit a proposal and it is accepted, you will be required to confirm that you accept the FOSDEM CoC. If you have any questions about the CoC or wish to have one of the devroom organizers review your presentation slides or any other content for CoC compliance, please email iaas-virt-devroom at lists.fosdem.org and we will do our best to help you out.
