News : Android, iPhone, Maemo, WebOS ... developers wanted
by info＠fosdem.org 30 Jan '11

30 Jan '11

Last edition there was a FOSDEM schedule application [1] available for almost every phone platform. Following this success we'd like to do a new call-for-development to ask the same thing again for this edition. -------- EXISTING CODE ------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you use the existing code where possible, and don't hesitate to contact the previous developers to see if they are still interested to help you update the application. Platform Source Previous devs Android source [2] Michaël Uyttersprot, Pieter Iserbyt and Christophe Vandeplas iPhone source [3] Adam Ziolkowski and Leon Handreke Maemo source [4] The company Ixonos Oyj [5], with Alexander Bezprozvanny (Advisor), Alexey Vyskubov (PM), Berendova Monika (Dev), Hanzes Matus (Dev), Komara Martin (Dev), Korinek Pavol (Dev), Pavelka Pavol (Dev), Timko Marek (Dev), Uzak Matus (Dev), Fortes Francisco(Dev) WebOS source [6] Raphael Kallensee -------- DATA SOURCE --------------------------------------------------------- Data sources can be any of these: * http://fosdem.org/schedule/xml [7] * http://fosdem.org/schedule/ical [8] * http://fosdem.org/schedule/xcal [9] Be careful. These still contain the schedule of last year, so don't hardcode the content into your application as even the week before FOSDEM some schedule-changes might occur. Coding the links and adding an "sync" or "update" functionality should be the way to go. GSM BTS at Fosdem 2011?
by Richard Hartmann 12 Jan '11

12 Jan '11

Hi all, are there any plans to establish a GSM network next year? If yes, do we need to bring our own SIM cards? Is there anything I should look for when scavenging them? Would someone who works at a telco or similar be able to grab a few SIM cards (scrubbed clean of personal data, obviously)? Would it even help to have a common pool of assorted SIM cards to hand out to people? Personally, I think it would be awesome if things worked out this time :) Richard

Running a GSM BTS at fosdem ?
by Sylvain Munaut 12 Jan '11

12 Jan '11

Hi, Back in november/december, I made a request to the IBPT for a special temporary GSM licence. I was originally planning to use it in a talk on GSM but my proposal wasn't selected. Since the authorization has now been granted (and paid for), it'd be a waste not to use it The idea would just to have a single BTS running a small demo network with just A4 sheets around pointing to a website for more infos, no stand or anything. Can this be arranged on short notice ? Who should I talk to for details ? Cheers, Sylvain

Keysigning: please submit your keys
by Philip Paeps 11 Jan '11

11 Jan '11

The keysigning infrastructure seems to have held up well this year. I spent some time today preparing the infrastructure for FOSDEM 2011. Same procedure as last year: if you intend to participate in the keysigning event, please submit the keys you'd like to have signed to ksp.fosdem.org. If you're using GnuPG, that can be easily accomplished with: % gpg --keyserver ksp.fosdem.org --send-key <your-keyid> Please check that your key was correctly submitted by pointing a webbrowser at http://ksp.fosdem.org/. If your key is missing after you submitted it, send me an email and I'll try to find out what's up. Key submissions close Monday before FOSDEM to give me some time to try to remember how I generated the lists again. Get submitting. - Philip -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip(a)fosdem.org subscribed to the list.

by Florian Effenberger 07 Jan '11

Accessibility DevRoom fosdem 2011 CfP
by Louis Suárez-Potts 25 Dec '10

25 Dec '10

Hi All, **Call for talks for the accessibility DevRoom at fosdem 2011** — http://fosdem.org/2011/ – 6 February 2011, 09:00 to 17:00, Brussels, Belgium — We will be holding an Accessibility DevRoom at fosdem 2011 [0] and are requesting abstracts for structured presentations now. Important information, dates: • Submission deadline for abstracts: 2010-12-31 • Notification of accepted speakers: 2011-01-10 • Final schedule: 2011-01-12 • Get together: 2011-02-05 **About this DevRoom** Designing software so that it is accessible to and usable by people with disabilities has been a significant theme in software user interface development over the last few decades. Recent national and supra-national regulations, laws, and treaties - such as the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities - have only emphasized this work. There have been numerous significant accessibility achievements in Free/Libre and Open Source Software. These include work in accessibility frameworks and user interface toolkits, in accessible applications, in developer and authoring tools, and in the development and use of assistive technologies by people with disabilities. The focus of this DevRoom is to both demonstrate the breadth and scope of accessibility technologies in open source software, and to provide developers with the opportunity to collaborate - across desktops and applications and assistive technologies. We invite you to submit talks on these topics: • Inclusive design: state of the art • Specific problems in mobile devices • Document accessibility • Assistive Technologies & building blocks for same • Accessibility in user interface toolkits (Qt, JavaScript UI libraries, …) • Accessibility support in developer tools ** Your submission must include:** * Your name * The title of your talk * A short abstract of one to two paragraphs (150 words, max.) * A short biography * Links to related websites/blogs etc. * * * Send the abstracts (and ultimately presentations) to: accessibility-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org * * * (For now, it's a moderated list and at this point, mostly a bucket for submissions. if there is sufficient interest, all that will change, or we can add more lists, if that's needed. ) Presentations are to be formal and not longer than 45 minutes, plus 15 extra for questions. Panels with more than one speaker are possible, as are shorter presentations of 20 minutes, though the preference is for the longer format. Indeed, it's entirely possible that there will be some creative compromises…. The deadline for submissions is 31 December 2010. The proposals will be considered by a committee of peers. If your proposal has been accepted, you will be informed by email by 10 January 2011. Please be so kind as to forward this call for abstracts and papers to any and all relevant lists, sites, people. We hope to see you at fosdem 2011! - Louis Suarez-Potts OpenOffice.org Oracle [0] http://fosdem.org/2011/ [1] http://lists.fosdem.org/mailman/listinfo/accessibility-devroom

Certification schedule published
by Philip Paeps 16 Dec '10

16 Dec '10

We're happy to announce that there will again be an opportunity to take certification exams at FOSDEM 2011. This year, the Linux Professional Institute, the BSD Certification Group and Typo3 will be offering their respective exams. Information is available here: http://fosdem.org/2011/certification The schedule is here: http://fosdem.org/2011/schedule/tracks/certification Note: I'm aware that the pointers on the second page point to the 2010 schedule. I have it on good authority that "the right thing" will happen to them once the rest of the schedule for 2011 goes out[0]. Please sign up for exam sessions with the respective certification groups sooner rather than later as space is limited. In the case of BSDCA, exam papers also need to travel across an ocean and it helps to know to within a reasonable epsilon how many papers need to be shipped. - Philip [0] In other words, you may want to copy the relevant information down on a piece of paper. Who knows what our content damagement thing feels "the right thing" is. Might involve fireworks. Call me a skeptic. -- Philip Paeps Please don't Cc me, I am philip(a)fosdem.org subscribed to the list.
