Are the videos ever coming back?
by Liam Proven 05 Feb '22

There were a bunch of talks I didn't manage to see. Are the videos going to come back online at some point? Or do I need to contact each speaker individually and ask if they kept a copy? :-( -- Liam Proven – Profile: https://about.me/liamproven Email: lproven(a)cix.co.uk – gMail/gTalk/gHangouts: lproven(a)gmail.com Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn/Flickr: lproven – Skype: liamproven UK: +44 7939-087884 – ČR (+ WhatsApp/Telegram/Signal): +420 702 829 053

Academic Freedom vs CoC at FOSDEM
by Daniel Pocock 09 Jan '22

09 Jan '22

I feel FOSDEM might be the right place to raise this for a few reasons A recent high court decision has agreed that some of the more controversial analogies and metaphors are permitted[1] under academic freedom. Personally, I would not use the same metaphor in the same context or talking about the country in question. Quoting[1] Dr Stone from Melbourne Law School "given the requirements of the principle of academic freedom and the principle’s centrality to the purposes of a university, the particular provision that protects ‘intellectual freedom’ should have been understood, in some circumstances, *to take priority over the code of conduct* that Ridd was found to have breached" The case is about expressing an idea. It is not a blanket authorization to insult people. A volunteer on another FOSDEM list recently used an alias for the sanitary pass that is based on the same theme as the court judgment. Another volunteer observed that the pseudonym may violate a CoC. Anyway, the FOSDEM venue is a university so that makes it a great place to contemplate academic freedom. The L in ULB is for Libre The Nobel Peace Prize has just been granted[2] for efforts to safeguard Freedom of Expression. Is it a good moment to contemplate the relationship between Academic Freedom and CoCs? Virtual Valgrind Fosdem Devroom
by Mark Wielaard 31 Dec '21

31 Dec '21

Hi valgrind hackers, Valgrind will participate in the Virtual Fosdem on Sunday 6 February 2022 https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/track/valgrind/ We would like to invite people to propose talks on valgrind by submitting a talk proposal to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22 Please select the "Valgrind Devroom" Track. (If you have any trouble creating a penta login or submission please contact Julian and me with your proposal.) Because Fosdem will be virtual this year we will likely ask talks to be pre-recorded in advance and after playing your presentation we will do a live Q/A session using Jitsi and Matrix. Please pick a time that includes the length of your (recorded) talk plus ~15 minutes Q/A. We would like to finalize the schedule the first week of January so that people have enough time to record their talk, so please submit your proposals before the end of year (31 December 2021). Some possible topics for talks/discussions are: - New (or recently added) ports. - New CPU (instruction) support. - New (ideas/prototypes) of valgrind tools. - Valgrind release/bugfixing strategy/policy. - Advances in gdbserver and the GDB remote serial protocol. - DWARF, debuginfo, symbols and debuginfod servers. - Using valgrind with "safe" languages (Rust). - Adding/Testing Valgrind syscalls support. - Infrastructure changes (speedups) to the Valgrind JIT framework. - Your interesting use case with Valgrind. Sincerely, Mark & Julian

FOSDEM 2022 - Retrocomputing DevRoom Call for Participation
by François Revol 27 Dec '21

27 Dec '21

+-----------------------------------------------------------+ | | | FOSDEM 2022 RetroComputing DevRoom | | ~~~~ | | Call for participation | | | +-----------------------------------------------------------+ Hello, FOSDEM is a free software event that offers open source communities a place to meet, share ideas and collaborate. It is renowned for being highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. It is usually held in the city of Brussels (Belgium), but again this year will be a fully online event. FOSDEM 2022 will take place during the weekend of February 5th-6th 2022. More details about the event can be found at http://www.fosdem.org. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION After success in the past years, the Retrocomputing DevRoom will be back in 2022, with talks about usage of older computing hardware and software in modern times. Presentation topics could include but are not limited to: - Emulation of old systems to run videogames, legacy software, etc - New software, hardware or related to be used with classic systems - Open source software emulation/simulation - Open hardware - Operating systems/executives for retrocomputers/retrosystems - Uses of retrocomputing today - Other retrosystems topics - Opportunities in retrocomputing You are not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Specially this year, we are not constrained by a physical room shared with another topic, so we can potentially fill the full day, so if you previously submitted a workshop we couldn't accept due to length, you may want to try again, but take into account that you might not be able to have attendees feedback unlike with an in-person workshop. Also, this year all presentations will have to be recorded in advance, to avoid all the usual issues like spending 10 minutes getting a webcam to work, so even if we can't get live Q&A we can still have the talk proper. However, FOSDEM is an open source conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations. We are not afraid of technical stuff: devrooms are a place for development teams to meet, discuss, hack and publicly present their project’s latest improvements and future directions. If you will have special needs for your talk, please note that clearly in your proposal so that we can provide it. You can use the Wikipedia definition of retrocomputing as a reference definition to see if you talk qualifies, although it is not exclusive: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrocomputing This year again there is also an Emulator devroom: https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2021q4/003293.html So if you want to talk in-depth about technical emulator dev, you might consider submitting there instead. We might redirect some submissions to them if we feel they are more appropriate. Hopefully we can also have some shared topics. IMPORTANT DATES - 26 December 2021: submission deadline for talk proposals - 31 December 2021: announcement of selected talks - 15 January 2022: Recorded presentations upload deadline - 5 February 2022: Retrocomputing DevRoom VOLUNTEERING This year, due to the online nature of the event and the lack of previous years experience with that, devroom organizers are asked to find volunteers to help with running the talks, so if you want to help please contact us. USEFUL INFORMATION Use the FOSDEM Pentabarf tool to submit your proposal: https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22 - If necessary, create a Pentabarf account and activate it. Please reuse your account from previous years if you have already created it. - In the "Person" section, provide First name, Last name (in the "General" tab), Email (in the "Contact" tab) and Bio ("Abstract" field in the "Description" tab). - Submit a proposal by clicking on "Create event". - Important! Select the "Retrocomputing DevRoom" track (on the "General" tab). If you do not select a track, then nobody, from any track, will look at your submission! - Provide the title of your talk ("Event title" in the "General" tab). - Provide a description of the subject of the talk and the intended audience (in the "Abstract" field of the "Description" tab) - Provide a rough outline of the talk or goals of the session (a short list of bullet points covering topics that will be discussed) in the "Full description" field in the "Description" tab - Provide an expected length of your talk in the "Duration" field, including discussion. The default duration is 30 minutes. - Slides are NOT required at the moment of submission Please note neither FOSDEM nor the Retrocomputing DevRoom will reimburse any expenses you incur. Also note that the event takes place in the CET timezone, and while the talk is recorded you'll need to answer questions live, so if you aren't in Europe you will need to care about this, and notify us in your submission if you want your talk to be scheduled before or after a specific hour. We don't want you to loose a restful night! RECORDING OF TALKS The FOSDEM organizers aims to have all talks recorded. This requires speakers to consent to being recorded and streamed. If you plan to be a speaker, please understand that by doing so you implicitly give consent for your talk to be recorded and streamed. The recordings will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). As said, this time we will ask you to record your talk in advance. Once your submission is accepted you'll receive more information on the devroom organization, things like scheduling is still being worked out. Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. CONTACT The Retrocomputing DevRoom is managed by Pau Garcia Quiles and François Revol (retro-devroom-manager at fosdem.org) A mailing list of speakers, audience and the curious is available, please subscribe at: https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/retrocomputing-devroom

Conference Organizing Devroom CFP
by Wouter Verhelst 23 Dec '21

23 Dec '21

Hi all, This is the call for participation in the FOSDEM 2022 devroom on conference organisation. For the first time, FOSDEM will hold a devroom on all things related to organising a conference. We would like to invite any proposal for a talk or bof related to open source software and workflows relevant to organizing a conference, such as: - Volunteer management; - Scheduling and managing talks and events; - Online (virtual) conference workflows; - Recording and postprocessing of conference videos. Note that the above are just examples; any other subject related to conference management is welcome. Proposals should be made through FOSDEM's pentabarf system at https://penta.fosdem.org/submission no later than 2021-12-20, and accepted talks will be announced on 2021-12-31. Note that due to the online-only nature of FOSDEM 2022, talks will need to be prerecorded with a live Q&A session (if relevant); these will have to be uploaded into FOSDEM's system at a time to be announced later (sometime in January). Feel free to forward this CFP to other parties that may be interested! For the devroom organizers,

CFP FOSDEM ‘22 LLVM Devroom
by kiran 21 Dec '21

21 Dec '21

Hi, We have published the CFP for the LLVM Devroom. https://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2021-December/154215.html A copy is provided below for reference. Regards, --Kiran CALL FOR PAPERS / PARTICIPATION At FOSDEM 2022 (https://fosdem.org/2022/) LLVM will again participate with a dedicated devroom, on Saturday 5th of February online. As possibly the largest European Open Source Conference, FOSDEM attracts more than 600 lectures and over 8000 hackers - many core contributors of the world’s leading open source projects. Complementing the LLVM developer meetings, the devroom at FOSDEM provides a great opportunity for LLVM developers and the wider open source community to get together, connect and discuss. We invite academic, industrial and hobbyist speakers to present their work on developing or using LLVM, Clang, LLDB, Compiler-rt, MLIR, Flang, or any of the other technologies in the LLVM project. We are looking for: - Keynote speakers. - Technical presentations (default length of 30 minutes including questions) related to the development of LLVM technologies or use of those technologies in other projects. - Tutorials (default length of 45 minutes including questions). - Lightning talks (default length of 5 minutes). - Demos. - Volunteers for help with pre-recording presentations and/or running the event on February 5th. Submission: To submit a proposal, please create an account on the FOSDEM interface( https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account) If you already have an account from previous years, please reuse that. Submit your proposal following https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22, “Create Event”. Please make sure you select "LLVM devroom" as the "Track”. If your talk or tutorial requires a different duration then please request this in the "Duration" field of Schedule. Please note that while we will try to accommodate the requested duration, there is no guarantee that we will be able to. Presentations will be recorded and streamed. Sending your proposal implies giving permission to be recorded. Registration: FOSDEM does not require any registration and is free of charge. Important Dates: * December 20th 2021: Deadline for submission of proposals * December 31st 2021 (or before): Announcement of acceptance + final schedule * January 1st to January 15th 2022: Speakers record their talks * February 5th 2022: Devroom day, online Organization: The LLVM devroom event will be online. Accepted talks will be recorded in the first two weeks of January. The recorded talks will be streamed during the event. There will be a live Q&A right after the talk. The speakers have to be present online during the Q&A. Please use the following discourse thread to discuss any issues or questions related to submitting a proposal or the organisation of the event. https://llvm.discourse.group/t/cfp-fosdem-22-llvm-devroom/4944 Guidance on writing a proposal for the LLVM Dev Room: This is a guide to help you submit a good proposal and increase your chances of your proposal being accepted. If you have never presented at an LLVM meeting, then do not fear this process. We are actively looking for new speakers who are excited about LLVM and helping grow the community through these educational talks! You do not need to be a long time developer to submit a proposal. You may look at the talks presented in the past few editions to get an idea of the kind of talks accepted. But please don't feel constrained by the topics. Links below. https://archive.fosdem.org/2020/schedule/track/llvm/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2019/schedule/track/llvm/ https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/track/llvm_toolchain/ General Guidelines: - It should be clear from your abstract what your topic is, who your target audience is, and what are the takeaways for attendees. The program committee does not have time to read 10 page papers for each submission. - Talks about the use of an LLVM technology should include details about how LLVM is used and not only be about the resulting application. - Tutorials on “how to use X” in LLVM (or other subproject) are greatly desired and beneficial to many developers. Entry level topics are encouraged as well. - Typically a few paragraphs are sufficient. Best regards, LLVM @ FOSDEM organisers

CFP FOSDEM22 Graphics DevRoom
by Luc Verhaegen 17 Dec '21

17 Dec '21

Hi, After a hiatus in 2021, the upcoming FOSDEM will have a graphics DevRoom again. This time round on a sunday, the 6th of February 2022. As usual, the focus of this DevRoom is: * Graphics drivers: from display to media to 3d drivers, both in kernel or userspace. Be it part of DRM, KMS, V4L, (direct)FB, Xorg, Mesa... * Input drivers: kernel and userspace. * Windowing systems: X, Wayland, Mir, directFB, ... * Low level toolkit stuff * Low level machine learning. * Colour management. * ... FOSDEM '22 is sadly a virtual event again. While a virtual FOSDEM lacks all the wonderful madness of a real life FOSDEM, it does have the advantage of not having to deal with travel and accomodation, the physics of humans trundling around a big university campus, or a booklet. Talks: ------ Time slots will be the usual 25/50 minute talk length, you are free to fill this time up as you see fit, but you might want to reserve 5 minutes for Q&A. I expect there to be 8h available for scheduling. Since there are no travel accomodations to deal with, and there are no people who physically need to get from one end of the ULB campus to the other, and there are no 5000+ booklets to be printed, there is no first come, first serve requirement this year round. But the other side of that coin is that talks can be hard dropped from the devroom managers' side until very late in the process if anything is not in order. Hard talk submission deadline: 30th of december, 23:59UTC. Further info on when a talk video should be finished to fit in the FOSDEM infrastructure will follow, but expect somewhere between january 16th and 23rd, 3-2 weeks before the event. Again, more details will follow. Talk submission and review panel: Arkadiusz Hiler (ivyl) Luc Verhaegen (libv) Martin Ruokala (mupuf) Successful submitters will receive an email with further information on the 31st, as it's not as if I will have anything better to do given that mini-me will have been stabbed only once by then ;) Pentabarf: ---------- Since FOSDEM has had to flash migrate to virtual last year, no further work was sadly done to replace or fix pentabarf, a tool originally made to create the fancy FOSDEM booklet, so its pent-up-clunkiness has to be used again, especially since it actually works :) https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22 Re-use your accounts from the previous years. If you have forgotten your password, then you can reset it here: https://penta.fosdem.org/user/forgot_password Here are the basic requirements before we consider a talk worth scheduling: On your personal page: * General: * First Name * Last Name * Nickname * Public Name * Image * Contact: * Contact email address * Biography: * Short Biography On your event page: * On the General page: * Event title * Event subtitle. * Track: Graphics Devroom * Persons: * Add yourself as speaker. * Abstract: * Short abstract Unlike IRL events with a booklet, you should be able to tweak this information pretty much until you are finished with your talk. That's it, hope to see your submission in penta, and your talk at FOSDEM. Luc Verhaegen.
