CFP: Testing and Automation devroom, FOSDEM'22
by Alexander Todorov 06 Dec '21

06 Dec '21

Hello everyone, on behalf of Testing and Automation devroom I'd like to announce that call for participation is now open. Here are some ideas for topics that are a good fit for this devroom: Testing in the real, open source world - War stories/strategies for testing large scale or complex projects - Demistify resource e.g. systems/device/cloud provisioning in a CI loop - Tools that extend the ability to test low-level code, e.g. bootloaders, init systems, etc. - Projects that are introducing new/interesting ways of testing "systems" - Address the automated testing frameworks fragmentation - Lessons learned from testing Cool Tools (good candidates for lightning talks) - How your open source tool made developing quality software better - What tools do you use to setup your CI/CD - Combining projects/plugins/tools to build amazing things "Not enough people in the open source community know how to use $X, but here's a tutorial on how to use $X to make your project better." In the past we've had both newbies/students and experienced professionals and past speakers as part of the audience and talks covering from beginner/practical to advanced/abstract topics. If you have doubts then submit your proposal and leave a comment for the devroom managers and we'll get back to you. For more info see: https://fosdem-testingautomation.github.io/ <https://fosdem-testingautomation.github.io/> Happy testing, Alex

[CFP] Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing devroom
by Fritz Alder 06 Dec '21

06 Dec '21

Hey all, we're excited that we can hold the Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing devroom again next year! I pasted the CfP below but you can also find a nicely formatted version of it here: https://falder.org/fosdem22-cfp If you have questions or want to volunteer as a moderator during the talks, feel free to reach out to me! Best, Fritz Alder Jo Van Bulck Vasily Sartakov -- # FOSDEM 2022 (Online) - Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing Devroom Call For Participation -------- Submission deadline : 23/12/2021 -------- ## About FOSDEM [FOSDEM](https://fosdem.org/2022/) is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Every year, thousands of developers of free and open source software from all over the world gather at the event in Brussels. In 2022, they will again gather online. FOSDEM is free to attend. There is no registration. ## Devroom overview and objectives Following the success of [last year's edition](https://archive.fosdem.org/2021/schedule/track/hardware_aided_trus…, we are for the 3rd time organizing a devroom devoted to the emerging open-source ecosystem around *hardware-based Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs)*. Under TEEs, we understand architectures that allow to isolate and attest trusted "enclave" software components running on top of a potentially compromised operating system. Over the last years, all major processor vendors have developed some form of TEE support, e.g., Intel's [Software Guard Extensions (SGX)](https://software.intel.com/content/www/us/en/develop/topics/software-…) and [Trust Domain Extensions (TDX)](https://software.intel.com/content/www/us/en/develop/articles/intel-t…) ARM's [TrustZone](https://developer.arm.com/ip-products/security-ip/trustzone) and upcoming [Confidential Compute Architecture (Arm CCA)](https://developer.arm.com/architectures/architecture-security-feature…) as well as [Morello](https://developer.arm.com/architectures/cpu-architecture/a-profile…, AMD's [Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV)](https://developer.amd.com/sev/) and upcoming SEV-ES/SEV-SNP extensions, and IBM's [Protected Execution Facility (PEF)](https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/powerpc/ultravisor.html) Hence, with today's mainstream consumer hardware being increasingly shipped with these advanced trusted computing technologies, this devroom wants to foster discussion on the much-needed open-source TEE ecosystem amongst industry players, academics, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and project maintainers. ## Desirable topics The devroom's topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Programming frameworks for TEEs: how to develop free and open-source software that can run inside enclaves (e.g., library OSs, SDKs, Linux kernel support, etc.). * Compiler and language support for emerging trusted hardware extensions. * Open-source enclave processor designs (e.g., RISC-V TEEs). * Use cases and applications on top of TEEs. * TEE-specific attacks and defenses: reverse engineering, side-channels, vulnerabilities, exploits. * Vision: future TEEs (what is missed, proposals, wishes, discussions). ## New old rules: What (unfortunately) did not change since last year For obvious reasons, the event will still not take place in a physical location but online. * The reference time will again be [Brussels local lime (CET)](https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/belgium/brussels) * Talks will be pre-recorded in advance, and streamed during the event. If your talk is selected, you can expect a recording deadline around January 15. * Q/A session will be take live. * A facility will be provided for people watching to chat between themselves. * A facility will be provided for people watching to submit questions. * Once your talk was accepted, we will assign you a deputy to help you to produce the pre-recorded content. * During the stream of your talk, you must be available online for the Q/A session We had interesting discussions after the talks of last year, so we hope that this format will work well again. ## Key dates * Submission deadline: 23 December 2021 * Announcement of selected talks: 31 December 2021 * Deadline for the pre-recorded talks: Around January 15, 2022 * Conference dates 5 & 6 February 2022 **(online)** * Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing devroom date: Saturday 5 February 2022 **(online)** ## Submit a talk proposal Submissions are required to proceed through the [FOSDEM 2022 Pentabarf website](https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22). If you do not know how to use Pentabarf yet, you can [read a beginner's guide here](https://medium.com/@maartjeme/beginners-guide-to-pentabarf-78808a1ce5…. Your submission must include the following information: * Your contact email. * The title (and possible subtitle) of your talk: please be descriptive, as the audience will have to choose to attend your talk out of a listing with ~500 talks from other projects at FOSDEM. * Select "Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing devroom" as the track. * A short abstract of one paragraph. * A longer description if you wish to do so. * Links to related websites / blogs etc. You should target a talk duration of 20 minutes (pre-recorded) with 5 mins of live Q&A (leaves us with 5 mins change over for talks). ## Contact and organizers * Main organizer: Fritz Alder (fritz.alder(a)cs.kuleuven.be) * Devroom URL on the FOSDEM website: <https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/track/hardware_aided_trusted_computing/> * The devroom is supported by the [Confidential Computing Consortium](https://confidentialcomputing.io/).

Matrix.org Foundation and Community 2022 - Call for Participations
by Thibault Martin 06 Dec '21

06 Dec '21

Hej all, The Call for Participations to the first Matrix.org <http://matrix.org/> Foundation and Community devroom can be found here: https://matrix.org/blog/2021/12/02/call-for-participation-for-the-fosdem-20… <https://matrix.org/blog/2021/12/02/call-for-participation-for-the-fosdem-20…> You will find it reproduced below: A full day of Matrix talks This year, the Matrix.org Foundation is excited to host the first ever Matrix.org Foundation and Community devroom at FOSDEM. A full day of talks, demos and workshops around Matrix itself and projects built on top of Matrix. Matrix is the open source project that publishes the Matrix open standard for secure, decentralised, real-time communication, and its Apache licensed reference implementations. We encourage people working on the Matrix protocol or building on it in an open source project to submit a proposal! Note that companies are welcome to talk about the Matrix details of their open source projects, but marketing talks are not welcome. We want this devroom to be a space where the Matrix community can show its work, where developers can talk about the challenges they faced and how they overcame them, and where people can get a glimpse of the future of the Matrix protocol and ecosystem. Talk Details The talks will be pre-recorded in January. They will be played during FOSDEM, followed by a session of live Q&A depending on the format. During the playback of the talk, people will be able to comment and ask questions in the chat (via Matrix!). The talks can follow one of three formats: 5 min lightning talk, ideal to showcase your project and make people want to have a look at it 20 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for topics that can be covered briefly 50 min talk + 10 min Q&A for more complex subjects which need more focus We strongly encourage you to prepare a demo when it makes sense, so people can actually see what your work looks like in practice! Of course, the proposal must respect the FOSDEM terms as well: The conference language is English. All content must relate to Free and Open Source Software. By participating in the event you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Submitting a Proposal Proposals must be submitted on FOSDEM's conference management system Pentabarf <https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22> before December 17th 2021. If you are not used to Pentabarf, you can follow this beginners guide to Pentabarf <https://eyskens.me/beginners-guide-to-pentabarf/>. We expect to receive more requests than we have slots available. The devroom organisers (two community members and one core team rep) will be reviewing the proposals and accepting them based on the potential positive impact the project has on Matrix (as defined in by the Mission section of https://matrix.org/foundation <https://matrix.org/foundation>). If a project proposal has been turned down, it doesn't mean we don't believe it has good potential. Maintainers are invited to join the #twim:matrix.org <https://matrix.to/#/#twim:matrix.org> Matrix room to give it some visibility.

[CFP] Free Software Radio DevRoom 2022
by Andrej Rode 06 Dec '21

06 Dec '21

Dear friends and fans of software-defined radio and free/open-source radio topics in general, FOSDEM 2022 (the free and open-source developer's meeting usually in Brussels, Europe but **repeatedly virtual**) will again feature a track on Software Defined Radio and any other radio-related topics in the **Free Software Radio** devroom. Therefore, we invite developers and users from the free software radio community to join us for this track and present your work, ideas and/or demos. Given the current circumstances and the virtual nature of this event in 2022, we are asking the presenters to pre-record the talks, which will then be gathered by us and streamed during the event. Presenters are also asked to be present online during their timeslot for live Q&A. Software Radio is an important tool for educators, tinkerers and industry to implement signal processing and communication algorithms in software while still allowing for easy access to real signals. This allow anyone to access the EM spectrum out of curiosity, for research or for profit. At FOSDEM we want to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas between different projects in the field of SDR. We hope to network all these projects, and improve collaboration, bring new ideas forward and get more people involved. The track's website resides at the link below. The final schedule will be available through Pentabarf and the official FOSDEM website. Notice that the reference time will be Brussels local time (CET). https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/track/free_software_radio/ Additional Information will be also available at: https://wiki.gnuradio.org/index.php/FOSDEM_2022 ** Submit your presentations To suggest a talk, go to https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22 and follow the instructions (you need an account, but can use your account from last year if you have one. Please do NOT create a new account if you already have one). You need to create an 'Event'; make sure it's in the Free Software Radio track! Your submission should have the following information: * Your contact Email * A descriptive title and subtitle of your talk * A short abstract * Links related to the project * [Optional] A longer description of the content of your talk. Lengths aren't fixed, but give a realistic estimate, and please don't exceed 30 minutes unless you have something special planned (in that case, contact one of us). We will typically go for 30-minute slots -- shorter talks, unless they're really short, usually tend to screw up the schedule too much. Please take into account some live Q&A at the end of your presentation, going for 25 minutes presentation plus 5 minutes for Q&A will provide a more lively conference experience for everyone. You aren't limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. However, FOSDEM is an free software conference, therefore we ask you to stay clear of marketing presentations and present something relevant to free/open software. We like nitty-gritty technical stuff. Topics discussed in this devroom include (but are not limited to): * SDR Frameworks + Tools * Cellular/telecoms software * Free/Open SDR hardware * Wireless security * Random fun wireless hacks * SDR in education * Satellite/spacecraft communication * Ham radio related topics ** Important Dates * Submission deadline: 26 December 2021 * Announcement of selected talks: 31 December 2021 * (preliminary) Pre-recorded presentation submission deadline: 23 January 2022 * Conference dates 5 & 6 February 2022 online * Free software radio devroom date: Sunday 6 February 2022 online In the last years we were always full to the brim with presentations, so if you want to present, please make sure to submit your abstracts soon! (It might be possible to get our allotted time extended to Saturday - given enough volunteers and high quality presentations to cover two days, but that's only an option as last resort) ** Following steps for accepted talks When your talk is accepted, you will be contacted by a deputy who will help you with the pre-recording of your talk. Together you will make sure that the content has the required quality and is stream-ready. When complete, the recording will be located into the streaming system, and Bob's your uncle. Don't forget that you **must** be available during the allocated timeslot of your talk for live Q&A. ** Steering Committee The track committee consists of: * Phil Balister - "Crofton" * Derek Kozel - "dkozel" * Andrej Rode - "noc0lour" * Martin Braun - "mbr0wn" Hope to hear from you soon! And please forward this announcement. Cheers Andrej

[CfP] Ada Development Room 2022
by Fernando Oleo Blanco 04 Dec '21

04 Dec '21

---------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Presentations 11th Ada Developer Room at FOSDEM 2022 Sunday 6 February 2022, Online, Everywhere www.cs.kuleuven.be/~dirk/ada-belgium/events/22/220206-fosdem.html Organized in cooperation with Ada-Europe and Ada-Belgium ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Ada FOSDEM community is pleased to announce the 11th edition of the Ada DevRoom! This time, however, it will take place online on the 6th of February. This edition of the Ada DevRoom has been organised in cooperation with Ada-Belgium [1] and Ada-Europe [2]. General Information about FOSDEM -------------------------------- FOSDEM [3], the Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, is a free and non-commercial two-day weekend event organized early each year in Brussels, Belgium. This year, for obvious reasons, it has been turned into an online event, just like last year. It is highly developer-oriented and brings together 8000+ participants from all over the world. No registration is necessary. The goal is to provide open source developers and communities a place to meet with other developers and projects, to be informed about the latest developments in the open source world, to attend interesting talks and presentations on various topics by open source project leaders and committers, and to promote the development and the benefits of open source solutions. Ada Programming Language and Technology --------------------------------------- Awareness of safety and security issues in software systems is ever increasing. Multi-core platforms are now abundant. These are some of the reasons that the Ada programming language and technology attracts more and more attention, among others due to Ada's support for programming by contract and for multi-core targets. The latest Ada language definition was updated early 2016. Work on new features is ongoing, such as improved support for fine-grained parallelism, and will result in a new Ada standard scheduled for 2022. Ada-related technology such as SPARK provides a solution for the safety and security aspects stated above. More and more tools are available, many are open source, including small and recent platforms. Interest in Ada keeps further increasing, also in the open source community, from which many exciting projects have been started. Ada Developer Room ------------------ FOSDEM is an ideal fit for an Ada Developer Room. On the one hand, it gives the general open source community an opportunity to see what is happening in the Ada community and how Ada can help to produce reliable and efficient open source software. On the other hand, it gives open source Ada projects an opportunity to present themselves, get feedback and ideas, and attract participants to their project and collaboration between projects. At previous FOSDEM events, the Ada-Belgium non-profit organization organized successful Ada Developer Rooms, offering a full day program in 2006 [4], a two-day program in 2009 [5], and full day programs in 2012-2016 [6-10], and in 2018-2020 [11-13]. An important goal is to present exciting Ada technology and projects, including people outside the traditional Ada community. This edition is no different, and since it will take place online, we hope to attrack people from all over the world. Call for Presentations ---------------------- We would like to schedule technical presentations, tutorials, demos, live performances, project status reports, discussions, etc, in the Ada Developer Room. Do you have a talk you want to give? Do you have a project you would like to present? Would you like to get more people involved with your project? The Ada organisers call on you to: - discuss and help organize the details, subscribe to the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [14]; - for bonus points, be a speaker: the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list is the place to be! - don't hesitate to propose a topic that you would like to present to the community, we are eager to know what you have in store for us! We're inviting proposals that are related to Ada software development, and include a technical oriented discussion. You're not limited to slide presentations, of course. Be creative. Propose something fun to share with people so they might feel some of your enthusiasm for Ada! Speaking slots should be 15 or 30 minutes, plus 5 or 10 minutes resp. for Q&A, if the same schedule as last year is followed. However, this schedule is flexible and can be modified for longer talks. For example, a long technical talk can be transformed into a 45 minutes talk + 5 minutes of Q&A. Depending on interest, we might also have a session with lightning presentations (e.g. 5 minutes each), and/or an informal discussion session. Note that all talks will be streamed live (audio+video) and should be prerecorded. After the streaming of the talk, a live Q&A session will take place. By submitting a proposal, you agree to being recorded and streamed. You also agree that the contents of your talk will be published under the same license as all FOSDEM content, a Creative Commons (CC-BY) license. Submission Guidelines --------------------- Your proposal must be submitted to the FOSDEM Pentabarf system [15]. If you already had an account from previous years, please, reuse it. If, for whatever reason, you cannot use Pentabarf, you can also submit your proposal by messaging the Ada-FOSDEM mailing list [14]. If needed, feel free to contact us at the Ada-FOSDEM Mailing list or at <irvise (at) irvise.xyz> (without spaces). Please include: - your name, affiliation, contact info; - the title of your talk (be descriptive and creative); - a short descriptive and attractive abstract; - potentially pointers to more information; - a short bio and photo. See programs of previous Ada DevRooms (URLs below) for presentation examples, as well as for the kind of info we need. Here is the slightly flexible schedule that we will follow: - December 26, 2021: end of the submission period. Remember, we only need the information in the list above. You do not have to submit the entire talk by this date. Try to submit your proposal as early as possible. It is better to submit half of the details early than all late, so do not wait for the last minute. Final speaker confirmation on Friday, December 31th 2021. CFP Introduction --------------------------- Embedded software is transforming the world, and FOSS embedded software is leading the way. From automotive to the Internet of Things, launching rockets, messing with your phone or automating your toaster, small devices, embedded systems, and automatons are everywhere Join in and tell the world about your project! This year FOSDEM is going to be an online event. All talks will need to be prerecorded and shared with FOSDEM organizers. Please only propose a talk that you're really able and willing to share. Topics Sought ------------------------ The embedded devroom seeks topics related to automotive, industrial, mobile, consumer electronics, autonomous and generally embedded systems, either from a professional or hobbyist background. Topics such as operating systems (Linux, free RTOS), hardware platforms (from microcontrollers to microprocessors, FPGAs) and software stacks are welcome. Related areas are of course of interest as well and our definition of "embedded" is elastic. CFP Schedule And Submission Details ----------------------------------------------------------- Please submit proposals no later than the 20th of December. Please use the following URL to submit your talk to FOSDEM 2022 https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22 and follow the following rules: * If you do not have an account yet, please create one, if you have submitted a talk in one of the previous years, please re-use your old account. * Select as the Track "Embedded, mobile and automotive devroom" * Select as the Event Type "Lecture" * Include a title. (Note that "Subtitle" entry doesn't appear on all conference documents, so make sure "Title" can stand on its own without "Subtitle" present.) * Include an Abstract of about 500 characters and a full description of any length you wish, but in both fields, please be concise, but clear and descriptive. * Indicate whether you seek a 25, or 50 minute slot. * Use the "Links" sub-area to your past work in the field you'd like to share. * Also in the notes field please indicate your timezone so that we can schedule a convenient timeslot for you. * Last but not least, make sure you have up to date contact info. FOSDEM 2022 - Distributions Devroom CFP
by Vipul Siddharth 03 Dec '21

We are excited to announce that the call for proposals is now open for the Distributions devroom at the upcoming FOSDEM 2022, to be hosted virtually on February 6th. As more and more workloads are being considered for containerization in the future and are finally landing in virtualized environments today, distributions remain a critical success factor and are more important than ever. Containers, like virtual machines, are not magical and rely on piles of software being assembled in a way that is repeatable, reliable, and functional. This is at the very heart of the problem that distributions have always solved. Each distribution is responsible for building, testing, and releasing software as well as managing the lifecycle of each application in the collection. Additionally, distributions do very important work in ensuring that various versions of upstream software work well together and can co-exist. Distributions are also, often responsible, for "de-vendoring" upstream software so that security fixes can be applied more quickly. We welcome submissions targeted at contributors interested in issues unique to distributions, especially in the following topics: ## Topics and Areas of Focus #### Focus Areas - The ways that distribution technologies can be leveraged to allow for easier creation of a multi-verse of artifacts from single source trees. This includes the increasing move toward self-contained applications and providing multiple non-parallel installed versions of software. - Efforts being made in shared environments around Build/Test/Release cycles. - Topics related to the delivery problem as it impacts updates in terms of both size and rollback/reliability are expected to be featured. #### Additional Topic Ideas - Distribution and Community collaborations, eg: how does code flow from developers to end users across communities, ensuring trust and code audibility - Automating building software for redistribution to minimize human involvement, eg: bots that branch and build software, bots that participate as team members extending human involvement - Cross-distribution collaboration on common issues, eg: content distribution, infrastructure, and documentation - Growing distribution communities, eg: onboarding new users, helping new contributors learn community values and technology, increasing contributor technical skills, recognizing and rewarding contribution - Principles of Rolling Releases, Long Term Supported Releases (LTS), Feature gated releases, and calendar releases - Distribution construction, installation, deployment, packaging and content management - Balancing new code and active upstreams verus security updates, back porting and minimization of user breaking changes - Delivering architecture independent software universally across architectures within the confines of distribution systems - Effectively communicating the difference in experience across architectures for developers, packagers, and users - Working with vendors and including them in the community - The future of distributions, emerging trends and evolving user demands from the idea of a platform - Creating a secure supply chain by evaluating upstream components and providing a secure source for downstreams Ideal submissions are actionable and opinionated. Submissions may be in the form of 25 or 50 minute talks, panel sessions, round-table discussions, or Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions. Due to the virtual format of FOSDEM, the preferred length for talk submissions is 25 minutes. Important Dates ------ - Submission Deadline: Dec 20th 2021 @ 2359 UTC - Acceptance notifications: Dec 31th 2021 @ 2359 UTC - Final schedule announcement: Jan 14th 2021 @ 2359 UTC How to submit -------------- Visit https://penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22 1.) If you do not have an account, create one at https://penta.fosdem.org/user/new_account and sign in 2.) Click 'Create Event' 3.) Enter your presentation details 4.) Be sure to select the Distributions Devroom track! 5.) Submit What to include --------------- - The title of your submission - A 1-paragraph Abstract - A longer description including the benefit of your talk to your target audience, including a definition of your target audience. - Approximate length / type of submission (talk, BoF, ...) - Links to related websites/blogs/talk material (if any) Administrative Notes ---------------- All presentations will need to be pre-recorded and put into our system at least a couple of weeks before the event. Once your talk is accepted, we will assign you a volunteer to help you to produce the pre-recorded content. The volunteer will review the content and ensure its quality. They will also be responsible to ensure that the content is into the system and ready to broadcast. During the stream of your talk, you must be available online for the Q/A session. The recordings will be published under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). If you have any questions, please contact the devroom organizers: distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org (https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/distributions-devroom) Kind Regards -- Ben Cotton & Vipul Siddharth Distributions devroom managers
