Call for Participation: Web Performance Devroom 2025
by Dave Hunt 31 Oct '24

31 Oct '24

Hello everyone, We are excited to announce that the Web Performance devroom will be returning for FOSDEM 2025! The web performance devroom will focus on ongoing open standards development and FLOSS projects that support performance of the world wide web. The web performance field is driven by open standards (browser APIs, internet protocols), and relies on many FLOSS tools to monitor, analyze and improve performance. Most conferences about this topic tend to focus on best practices and standards once they’ve been finalized, while the ongoing creation of standards and FLOSS tooling development is rarely talked about. The objective of this devroom is to bring focus to the future of web performance through open standards, and open source developer tools. Here are some topic suggestions: FLOSS tools to monitor, measure, analyze, optimize backend or frontend web performance Open standards (eg. HTTP/3, upcoming JS/HTML/CSS standards) Academic research on web performance Share your web performance story: Share your challenges and your solutions and what you learned Ethical web performance: Address the balance between performance optimization and user privacy, especially in the context of increasing concerns about data collection practices by large corporations. Please submit your talk proposal by December 1st. We will let you know if your call has been accepted by December 15th. All talks will be in person, and can be 30 to 45 minutes in duration (including Q&A). You can submit your talk proposal at https://fosdem.org/submit making sure to select Web Performance as the track. Best of luck! Dave Hunt (Mozilla) & Peter Hedenskog (Wikimedia Foundation)

30 Oct '24

# FOSS on mobile devices devroom We are happy to once again announce that the FOSS on mobile devices Devroom is taking place at FOSDEM 25 and are calling you for participation! ## Important dates - 2024-10-30 - Call for Proposals opened - 2024-12-01 - Submission deadline - 2024-12-10 - Acceptance notification - 2024-12-15 - FOSDEM Schedule published - 2025-02-01 - Devroom taking place on the second half of Saturday All deadline times are 23:59 UTC. ## What is this devroom about? This devroom is about everything related to Linux and Free Software on smartphones and other non-x86 mobile devices that can run a (close to) mainline Linux kernel and fully FLOSS userspace. Things that we usually take for granted on our x86 laptops and servers. While a few people have been "daily driving" their "Linux first smartphones" for multiple years it is fair to say that the FOSS on Mobile ecosystem in it's current state is not ready yet for "the masses". In the meantime we welcome technologies allow running Android Apps under Linux or a Linux user space on Android kernels. However, the authors of this CfP feel that this can only be an interim solution and optimistically hope for a bright future where all vendors provide wonderful mainline support and we expand on an ever growing software ecosystem that puts the Android/iOS duopoly to shame ;) ## Topics sought FOSS on Mobile really is a whole universe ranging Some topics of interest including, but not limited to: - Mainline device support and hardware enablement (kernel and bootloader development) - Software Distribution for mobile devices - Graphical shells (e.g. Phosh, Plasma Mobile, Sxmo) - End-user applications and the broader mobile Linux software ecosystem - Software Freedom and Firmware - Open Source Hardware, Firmware and Software Freedom - Sustainability, Community, Getting engaged If you are unsure whether your topic fits, feel free to reach out to us at <mobile-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org>. Please also take note of the CfP of the more general Embedded, Mobile and Automotive Devroom[0]! [0] https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2024q4/003575.html ## Submission details We offer the following formats/time slots this year: - lightning talk: 10 minutes; ideal for quickly introducing a project, giving a short status update etc - regular slot: 20 minutes; the default - long slot: 30 minutes; ideal for in-depth presentation or BoFs (please explain in your submission why you need/prefer a long slot) **All times given include Q&A!** Requests for shorter time slots are generally more likely to be accepted, as we would like to offer a stage for many projects: It is our hope that the varied backgrounds and perspectives foster cross-project pollination. Please use the following URL to submit a talk to the pretalx conference system for FOSDEM 2025: https://fosdem.org/submit You can reuse your account from last year. - Choose the "FOSS on mobile devices" track - Please don't submit to multiple tracks, rather try choosing the most appropriate on and/or reach out to us. - Fill out the form: **Please note** that most information such as abstract and description will become available on the FOSDEM homepage (if your submission gets accepted) - Uploading a photograph and writing a short biography is encouraged. - Please mention the expected duration of your talk, including Q&A. ## Practical information - As the event is hosted by FOSDEM the CoC applies [0]. - While there are no mandatory measures against COVID-19 in place at FOSDEM [1], we recommend masking indoors and will likely equip the room with CO2 meters - If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to contact the devroom managers via email [2] [0] https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/conduct/ [1] https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/covid/ [2] mobile-devroom-manager(a)fosdem.org ## Licensing This Call for Proposals work is licensed under [CC-BY-SA 4.0](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). -- On behalf of the FOSS on Mobile Devroom Managers, Evangelos

Call for Participation: Confidential Computing devroom @ FOSDEM 2025
by Fritz Alder 30 Oct '24

30 Oct '24

A web version of this CFP is available at: https://falder.org/fosdem25-cfp # Confidential Computing devroom @ FOSDEM 2025 Following the success of [last years' editions](https://archive.fosdem.org/2024/schedule/track/confidential-compu…, we are for the 6th time organizing a devroom devoted to the emerging open-source ecosystem around *hardware-based Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs)*, which nowadays is also known under the term *confidential computing*. Confidential computing leverages hardware-based TEEs in order to protect and secure data in-use. This devroom is devoted to this emerging free and open-source ecosystem around TEEs that allow to directly isolate and attest trusted "enclave" software components running on top of a potentially compromised operating system. Over the last years, all major processor vendors have developed some form of TEE support, e.g., * ARM TrustZone, Morello & Confidential Computing Architecture (CCA) * AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV) & SEV-ES/SEV-SNP extensions * IBM Secure Execution for Linux on Z (SEL). * Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) and Trust Domain Extensions (TDX) * NVIDIA H100 GPUs Hence, with today's mainstream consumer hardware being increasingly shipped with these advanced trusted computing technologies, this devroom wants to foster discussion on the much-needed free and open-source TEE ecosystem amongst industry players, academics, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and project maintainers. ## Desirable topics The devroom's topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Open-source confidential computing. * An introduction to the existing solutions and the use cases they cover, etc. * Programming frameworks for TEEs: how to develop free and open-source software that can run inside enclaves (e.g., library OSs, SDKs, Linux kernel support, etc.). * Confidential computing deployment: Challenges and benefits. * Use cases and applications on top of TEEs such as applying confidential computing to the Cloud Native space. * Compiler and language support for emerging trusted hardware extensions. * Open-source enclave processor designs (e.g., RISC-V TEEs). * Attestation, focusing on Confidential Computing (see note below) * Existing technologies: * What do they have in common, how do they differ? * Which confidential computing use cases can they cover? * Upcoming technologies: * TEEs on accelerators (GPUs, NPUs, DPUs, etc) * Interaction between existing and upcoming technologies * Opportunities * Vision: future TEEs (what is missed, proposals, wishes, discussions). * TEE-specific attacks and defenses: reverse engineering, side-channels, vulnerabilities, exploits. ## This year's changes As there's a dedicated [attestation devroom](https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/track/attestation/), we encourage topics related to attestation that do not relate to general confidential computing to be submitted there. Please note that we do **not** allow remote speakers this year anymore. All speakers need to commit to be at FOSDEM in-person on February 1, 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. ## Key dates (Brussels time) * Submission deadline: December 1, 2024 * Announcement of selected talks: December 15, 2024 or earlier * FOSDEM dates February 1 & 2, 2025 * Confidential computing devroom date: February 1, 2025, 9am-1pm ## Submit a talk proposal Submissions are required to proceed through the [new and updated FOSDEM 2025 system](https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp). Your submission must include the following information: * Proposal title of your talk: please be descriptive, as the audience will have to choose to attend your talk out of a listing with ~500 talks from other projects at FOSDEM. * Select "Confidential computing devroom" as the track. * A longer description if you wish to do so. * A short abstract of one paragraph. * Submission notes to let us know of specifics to your talk. * Additional speakers if you want to add them. * FOSDEM requires you to fill in which open-source license you use and to provide links to your source code. *All our talks at FOSDEM **must** be about free and open-source software, so please make it clear to the organizers by providing a public URL to the source code of the relevant project(s).In case the URL is not yet public, please indicate so and explicitly clarify your commitment to have the code available the latest at the time of the devroom.* * Information about yourself. We target a block of **20 minutes** per talk (*including* ~5 minutes of Q&A). If you wish to only give a shorter talk, you can let us know in the submission notes. We leave the option open to have several **10 minute** talks for rapid-fire ideas and discussion points. Let us know in the submission notes if you plan your submission to be more interactive so that we can plan in more time for discussion after your talk. ## Useful links * [FOSDEM 2025 website](https://fosdem.org/2025/) * [FOSDEM 2024 Confidential Computing devroom](https://archive.fosdem.org/2024/schedule/track/confidential-comput… * [FOSDEM 2023 Confidential Computing devroom](https://archive.fosdem.org/2023/schedule/track/confidential_comput… * [FOSDEM 2022 Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing devroom](https://archive.fosdem.org/2022/schedule/track/hardware_aided_trus… * [FOSDEM 2021 Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing devroom](https://archive.fosdem.org/2021/schedule/track/hardware_aided_trus… * [FOSDEM 2020 Hardware-Aided Trusted Computing devroom](https://archive.fosdem.org/2020/schedule/track/hardware_aided_trus… ## Contact and organizers If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the whole organizer team under mailto:confidential-devroom-manager@fosdem.org or reach an individual organizer below: * Organizers: * [Fabiano Fidêncio](mailto:fabiano@fidencio.org) * [Fritz Alder](mailto:fritz.alder.work@gmail.com) * [Ilaria Battiston](mailto:ilaria.battiston@cwi.nl) * [Jo Van Bulck](mailto:jo.vanbulck@kuleuven.be) * [Steffen Eiden](mailto:fosdem@eiden.de)

After successful editions in 2019 and 2020, we’re ready to showcase all the innovative projects that have been built over the past four years and foster connections between quantum and classical open-source communities. Submit your proposals to help shape this year’s schedule—we look forward to seeing what you bring! About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a non-commercial event organized by the community, for the community. FOSDEM 2025 will take place on the weekend of February 1 and 2, 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. Participation is free and open to everyone. Attendance last year exceeded 8,000 participants. Essential Information - Submission deadline: *December 1, 2024* (at 00:00 UTC+1) - Announcement of selected talks: December 15, 2024 - Quantum Computing devroom: Sunday, February 2, 2025 (afternoon) - Talk format: 25 minutes (including Q&A). In-person only. Topics of Interest We'd like to make the devroom topics as diverse as possible, so we are looking to offer a mixture of presentations, short tutorials, demos, etc. Presentations must be related to open-source software for quantum technologies, but we do encourage submissions that push boundaries and experiment with the unexpected. We’d like to hear about new developments in: - Quantum programming languages and tools - Compilation, transpilation, and optimization of quantum programs - Error mitigation, correction, and making noisy qubits work - Software tools for open quantum hardware - Quantum resource estimation and benchmarking - Quantum cryptography, network, and communication As well as more off the beaten track topics. Here are a few ideas: - Quantum-inspired classical projects - Lessons learned from building quantum software - Insights on building open quantum communities - Surprising and fun uses of quantum hardware or software - Long-shot ideas and ambitious visions for the future of quantum software - Mashups of quantum tech with art, games, or everyday tools - New ways of teaching and learning quantum concepts Or, of course, a superposition of the above! With the understanding that proposed talks should focus on substance over quantum hype. If you have a wild idea that doesn’t fit into these categories, perfect—we love surprises! If it’s weird, bold, or thought-provoking, we want to hear about it. Please keep in mind that many attendees will not be quantum computing experts! Speaker Guidelines - Please submit your talk proposals at https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp - FOSDEM is using a self-hosted Pretalx installation for managing talk submissions. You will need to create an account, if you don’t already have one. - In the Submission notes, confirm that you will attend FOSDEM in person if your talk is accepted. We’re unable to fund travel or lodging for speakers, so make sure you have the means to attend. - Select the *«Quantum Computing*» track for your proposal. - All presentations will be recorded and shared under a Creative Commons license (CC-BY-SA or CC-BY). By submitting, you agree to these terms. (web version of this CFP available at https://javier.github.io/data_analytics_devroom_cfp_fosdem_2025/) Welcome to the first edition of the Data Analytics DevRoom at FOSDEM. Our DevRoom will be scheduled on Saturday, February 1st 2025. We will be accepting in-person talks only, with recordings for all the sessions. # About the Data Analytics DevRoom Data Analytics covers a wide range of activities involving data: Ingestion, Extraction, Stream Processing, Open Data Formats, Data Storage, Scientific Libraries, OLAP Databases, Data Quality, Business Analytics, Data Visualization... This DevRoom is a celebration of Open Source Data Analytics projects of all types and sizes. We invite project contributors to present their features, architecture, design, real-world use cases, and integrations. We also encourage end users to share how open-source data analytics projects are helping them solve their everyday challenges. The devroom is a conference-within-a-conference that gives us the opportunity to come together and chat, hack, and share stories about Data Analytics in FLOSS ecosystems. This DevRoom is also an opportunity to identify potential collaborations across projects covering different aspects of the data lifecycle. If you are wondering what type of project would be suitable, this non-comprehensive list of excellent FOSS projects for Data Analytics can give you some clues: Apache Arrow, DuckDB, ClickHouse, Apache Druid, QuestDB, Timescale, Grafana, Apache Superset, Redash, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Bokeh, D3, Graphic-walker, Plots.jl, Makie, Gadfly, Ggplot2, Iceberg, Parquet, Delta Lake, Apache Hudi, LakeFS, Avro, ORC, Presto/Trino, OpenSearch, Valkey, Apache Doris, Pinot, Debezium, Apache Pulsar, Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Vaex, Scipy, Mumpy, Pandas, Polars, Dask, Dagger.jl, Dataframes.jl, Dplyr, Tibble, Tidyr, Rsample, Broom, Tidyquant, Dbt, Apache Airflow, Dagster, DataHub, Amundsen, Great Expectations, and many more. We want our Devroom to be a safe space for everyone, so we kindly ask all participants to follow the FOSDEM code of conduct https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/conduct/. *** # Call for Papers We welcome submissions about, but not limited to, open source libraries, open source projects, or technical use cases explaining how one (or more) open source components are being used to power real-life use case. Talks featuring more than one open source data project are encouraged. **All programming languages** are welcome. If in doubt, think if the talk you want to submit would be appealing for an audience interested in data analytics. If the answer is yes, please do submit. We are aware some open source projects have also non-open source commercial offerings (we all need to pay the rent!). This Devroom is only about the FOSS part of those projects, so please leave the commercial pitch outside of your proposals and presentations. ## Diversity, Junior Developers, and First-time Speakers We strongly encourage submissions from individuals of all genders, ethnicities, abilities, and backgrounds to foster a diverse and inclusive environment. We also welcome first-time speakers and, if needed, we will be happy to help you rehearse your talk before the event. ## Format of the Talks We will be accepting submissions for 40-minute talks, 10-minute lightning talks, and 5-minute project pitches. Please note that if we don't receive enough submissions, we might not include lightning talks and/or project pitches. You choose the format of your talk. It can be shell-driven, slide-driven, demo-driven, or a combination. If you prefer, you can also present without any screen at all, specifically for the lightning talks and project pitches. If you plan to accept questions, please include them within your allocated time slot. Since we will have a mixed audience, the 40-minute talks will need to feature an intro to make sure everyone can get some context, but you are encouraged to discuss internals of your project or to go as deep as you want into technical details. ## Recording of All the Talks Please be aware of the fact that, barring any technical difficulties, Devroom talks at FOSDEM will be recorded. By submitting a proposal you agree to being recorded and to have your talk made available. *** # How to Submit Your Talk If you would like to submit a proposal, you need to do it via the official FOSDEM website at: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp **_When submitting your talk, make sure to select the ‘Data Analytics Devroom’ as the 'Track’._** Please state the type of talk (40-minute talk, 10-minute Lightning talk, or 5-minute OSS Project pitch) in the submission notes. ## Important Dates * Deadline: 2024-11-30 by midnight (Brussels Time) * Announcement of selected talks: 2024-12-15 * Devroom will take place in Brussels, on Saturday February 1st 2025. If you have any special requests for a time slot in case your talk is selected, please add the relevant information in the notes section of the CFP submission. We encourage early submissions to allow ample time for review and feedback. ## Your Profile Be sure to properly fill your profile with: * your name * a short speaker bio * your contact information (for the organizers). If selected, please do remember to include both email and phone as there will be no other reliable form of emergency communication on the day. *** # Contact and Organising Team If you need to get in touch with the organisers of this devroom, please email analytics-devroom-managers at fosdem.org. * Jaromir Hamala, Core Database Developer at https://questdb.io * Javier Ramirez, Data Advocate at https://questdb.io * Ricardo Sueiras, Principal Developer Advocate at https://aws.amazon.com/ --- Thanks and see you all at FOSDEM
