LLVM dev room - CFP
by Kristof Beyls 26 Oct '24

26 Oct '24

CFP FOSDEM 2025 LLVM dev room At FOSDEM 2025, LLVM will again participate with a dedicated devroom, on Saturday morning February 1st, in Brussels. As possibly the largest European Open Source Conference, FOSDEM attracts more than 600 lectures and over 8000 hackers - many core contributors of the world’s leading open source projects. Complementing the LLVM developer meetings, the devroom at FOSDEM provides a great opportunity for LLVM developers and the wider open source community to get together, connect and discuss. We invite academic, industrial and hobbyist speakers to present their work on developing or using LLVM, Clang, LLDB, Compiler-rt, MLIR, Flang, or any of the other technologies in the LLVM project. We are looking for: * Keynote speakers. * Technical presentations (default length of 30 minutes including questions) related to the development of LLVM technologies or use of those technologies in other projects. * Tutorials. * Lightning talks (default length of 5 minutes). * Demos. ### Submission Please submit your proposal through the FOSDEM pretalx interface( https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp) clicking the "Submit a proposal" button. Please make sure you select "LLVM" as the "Track”. By default we will assume you submit a proposal for a full talk, aiming for 20 minutes of presenting and 10 minutes of questions. If you propose a different kind of talk and would prefer a different length, please do clearly state so in the "Submission Notes" field. We optimize the length of individual presentations taking into account all submissions and preferred length to achieve the best possible overall program. Presentations will be recorded and streamed. Sending your proposal implies giving permission to be recorded. This year, FOSDEM only accepts in-person presentations, with a live stream and live chat for remote participants. The deadline for receiving proposals is December 1st, 2024. Speakers will be notified of acceptance or rejection by December 15th. Please find some advice on what constitutes a good proposal at the end of this CFP. ### Registration FOSDEM does not require any registration and is free of charge. All participants need to follow the FOSDEM Code of Conduct( https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/conduct/) ### Important Dates * December 1st 2024: Deadline for submission of proposals * December 15th 2024: Announcement of acceptance + final schedule * February 1st 2025: Devroom day, in-person in Brussels. ### Organization Please use the LLVM Discourse thread at https://discourse.llvm.org/t/cfp-fosdem-2025-llvm-dev-room to discuss any issues or questions related to submitting a proposal or the organisation of the event. ### Guidance on writing a proposal for the LLVM Dev Room This is a guide to help you submit a good proposal and increase your chances of your proposal being accepted. If you have never presented at an LLVM meeting, then do not fear this process. We are actively looking for new speakers who are excited about LLVM and helping grow the community through these educational talks! You do not need to be a long time developer to submit a proposal. The programs of the FOSDEM LLVM dev room from past years can give you an impression of what an abstract can look like. #### General Guidelines: * It should be clear from your abstract what your topic is, who your target audience is, and what are the takeaways for attendees. The program committee does not have time to read 10 page papers for each submission. * Talks about the use of an LLVM technology should include details about how LLVM is used and not only be about the resulting application. * Tutorials on “how to use X” in LLVM (or other subproject) are greatly desired and beneficial to many developers. Entry level topics are encouraged as well. * Typically a few paragraphs is sufficient. Best regards, the LLVM @ FOSDEM organisers

We are delighted to announce the Call for Participation (CFP) for the very first eBPF Devroom at FOSDEM! Mark the Dates -------------- - December 1st, 2024: Submission deadline - December 15th, 2024: Announcement of accepted talks and schedule - February 1st, 2025 (Saturday afternoon): eBPF Devroom at FOSDEM eBPF at FOSDEM -------------- Originally introduced to make the Linux kernel more programmable, eBPF allows users to load safe and efficient programs into the kernel, in order to implement custom logic running on specific events. The main use cases include kernel or user-space tracing and monitoring, network packet processing, security policies enforcement, or process scheduling. Today, eBPF also extends to Windows, user-space runtimes, or hardware offloads. The depth of the ecosystem has expanded far beyond its original goals and has seen increasing adoption from both enthusiasts and professionals within the open-source community, while the list of use cases and eBPF-based projects continues to grow. After hosting a number of eBPF-related talks in various devrooms over the years, FOSDEM 2025 welcomes a devroom dedicated to eBPF for the first time! This devroom aims at gathering talks about various aspects of eBPF, ideally on multiple platforms. Topics of Interest ------------------ FOSDEM is an event centered on free and open-source software development, and brings the opportunity to reach a large audience of knowledgeable, highly technical open-source software activists. If you have something to present about eBPF, we would love for you to consider submitting a proposal to the Devroom. The projects or technologies discussed in the talks MUST be open-source. Topics of interest for the Devroom include (but are not limited to): - eBPF development: recent or proposed features (on Linux, on other platforms, or even cross-platform), such as: - eBPF program signing and supply chain security - Profiling eBPF with eBPF - eBPF-based process schedulers - eBPF in storage devices - eBPF verifier improvements or alternative implementations - Memory management for eBPF - Deep-dives on existing eBPF features - Working with eBPF: best practices, common mistakes, debugging, etc. - eBPF toolchain, for compiling, managing, debugging, packaging, and deploying eBPF programs and related objects - eBPF libraries, in C/C++, Go, Rust, or other languages - eBPF in the real world, production use cases and their impact - eBPF community efforts (documentation, standardization, cross-platform initiatives) The list is not exhaustive, don't hesitate to submit your proposal! 2025 Distributions DevRoom - Call for Participation
by benny Vasquez 25 Oct '24

25 Oct '24

The Distributions DevRoom returns in-person to FOSDEM for a full day of distribution-related content in Brussels on Sunday, February 2nd, 2025. The Distros DevRoom organizers are happy to share that the call for proposals is now open, and will be accepting proposals until November 30th. Read on to learn more about this DevRoom, what topics we want to see, and how you can submit. Submit your talk to FOSDEM[1] (following the guidelines below), when you're ready! Important Dates - Now - Call for Participation opens - 1 December - Call for Participation ends - 1 - 5 December - Submissions reviewed - 6 December - Speakers notified - 12 December - Deadline for speakers to confirm - 15 December - developer rooms publish complete schedules - 2 February - Distros DevRoom at FOSDEM Call for Proposals The audience for the Distributions DevRoom is primarily contributors and developers of Linux distributions. We may accept a limited amount of content with a focus on end users, but the Distributions DevRoom organizers believe most user-focused content better fits in other DevRooms or events. We happily welcome submissions targeted toward contributors and distribution developers. In the CFP submission system, submitters should identify a theme in their submission that best identifies the scope of their topic. There are three themes in 2025: - OS Development - Community in Linux operating systems - Emerging topics around Linux development See suggested topics for each theme below: *Theme: OS Development* - Distribution construction, installation, deployment, packaging, and content management. - Balancing new code and active upstreams versus security updates and minimization of breaking changes. - Automation of releases and testing. - Delivering architecture-independent software. - Creating a secure supply chain by evaluating upstream components and providing a secure source for downstreams. - Distro-agnostic integration testing. *Theme: Community in Linux operating systems* - Best practices and guidance for contributing in Linux distributions and their upstream dependencies. - Growing, participating, and working with communities in the distribution ecosystem. - Cross-distribution collaboration on common issues. - Working with vendors and including them in the community. - Non-engineering topics inside of distribution communities (e.g. documentation, marketing, internationalization, design, community operations, etc.). *Theme: Emerging topics around Linux development*The future of distributions and emerging trends. This category is intentionally broad to best capture new ideas and thoughts that do not fit neatly into the above two themes. About the Distributions DevRoom Linux distributions are critical digital infrastructure in the 2020s. In addition to their relevance today, they are some of the oldest and most historic Free and Open Source Software communities still in existence. As the context of Linux distributions changes and evolves since their origin in 1991, they remain an important fixture in digital infrastructure. Linux distributions do important work in ensuring various versions of upstream software work well together and can co-exist. They are also often responsible for "de-vendoring" upstream software so that security fixes can be applied more quickly. Additionally, Linux distributions have become the centerpiece of other important infrastructure projects like containers and container orchestration software. This DevRoom provides a unique home for the convergence of several different Linux distribution communities to share ideas and start conversations that matter to all of us. Although there are several different distributions that have different approaches to software packaging, choice of desktop environments, and various use cases, the Distributions DevRoom is a historic open forum that is unique to FOSDEM in making a space for all of our communities to share and learn from each other. The Distributions DevRoom organizers can be reached at distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org[3]. Process Go to the FOSDEM 2025 CFP website[1]. Continuing from last year, Pretalx has replaced Pentabarf! Log in, and click "Submit CFP" - If you don't have an account, follow the instructions to create an account first. Your submission must include the following information: - Proposal title - Type (chose Talk) - Track (choose Distributions from the drop-down menu) - Abstract (Please enter the text you would like to see on the website) - Submission Notes (any other notes for the DevRoom managers) - Session image (optional new feature) - Use this if you want an illustration to go with your proposal. Please do not upload files larger than 10.0MB! - Additional speaker (only necessary if you are including additional speakers) Click Continue and complete the next page: - About your proposal: If presenting software and/or content, which open source license do you use? - FOSDEM is an open-source software conference, please specify which OSI-approved license[2] your proposal uses. - Extra review material: Only shown to reviewers and not published when scheduled - use this to provide more context that might be helpful to reviewers. - Extra contact details (optional) Click Continue and complete the next page: - Profile picture - (Your) Name - Personal biography - Availability during FOSDEM weekend: for scheduling. Please note: the Distributions DevRoom is on Sunday, February 2nd. Once your talk is submitted, the Distributions DevRoom organizers will review the content. - We will try to accomodate as many submissions as possible while balancing the types of content and the ecosystems covered. - Scheduling is always a bane, so we appreciate speaker flexibility. - It may be that your talk isn't selected for the Distributions room, but might fit in another room. If so, we will work with you and the other organizers. If you have questions, you can reach out to the Distributions DevRoom organizers at distributions-devroom(a)lists.fosdem.org[3] [1] https://fosdem.org/submit [2] https://opensource.org/licenses/ [3] https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/distributions-devroom About FOSDEM FOSDEM is a free event for software developers to meet, share ideas and collaborate. Call for Participation: Educational devroom @ FOSDEM 2025
by Bart Mathijssen 24 Oct '24

24 Oct '24

Hello everyone, We are happy to announce that the former FOSS Educational Programming Languages Devroom has been renamed to Educational Devroom and will again be held in 2025. While previous years primarily focused on programming languages, we would like to broaden the scope of this devroom to include open source learning tools and concepts in education. ## Call for participation We are seeking presentations discussing topics such as programming languages and environments, coding competitions, educational foundations, learning materials, learning management systems, and more. If you are unsure if your presentation fits this devroom, feel free to reach out so we can assist you. It is important to remember that free software is both a movement and an idea. These ideas can be expressed by creating and contributing to open-source software, as well as how you choose to educate people about technology. ## Submission process Please submit your proposals at https://fosdem.org/submit by the 1st of December 2024. If you already have an account from a previous year, you should reuse it so all recorded FOSDEM contributions are associated with your profile. When submitting your proposal, select 'Educational' from the track drop-down menu. Write the desired duration including question and answer into the proposal so we can take that into account when planning. We may decide to give shorter slots so that more speakers can participate. ## Requirements The conference language is English. All content must relate to Free and Open Source Software. By participating in the event you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). By participating in FOSDEM you are required to adhere the Code of Conduct: https://fosdem.org/2025/practical/conduct/ ## Please consider volunteering Regardless if you submit a talk, please consider volunteering if you plan on attending the devroom. Every small contribution counts, even just half an hour, so if you want to help make our devroom a success, please let us know so we can stay in touch and plan. ## Devroom managers Current Devroom managers are Bart Mathijssen and Peter Mathijssen. You can use the dedicated email address to contact us: educational-devroom-manager at fosdem.org.

On behalf of the Testing and Continuous Delivery devroom I would like to announce that call for participation is now open! This room is about building better software through a focus on testing and continuous delivery practices across all layers of the stack. The purpose of this devroom is to share good and bad examples around the question “how to improve quality of our software by automating tests, deliveries or deployments” and to showcase new open source tools and practices. **What** Since this devroom has been a regular at FOSDEM, here are some ideas of what we would like to see, and what worked in prior years, they're just ideas though. Check out our website for more references: Testing in the real, open source world: - War stories/strategies for testing large scale or complex projects - Tools that extend the ability to test low-level code, e.g. bootloaders, init systems, etc. - Projects that are introducing new/interesting ways of testing "systems" - Address the automated testing frameworks fragmentation - Stories from end-users (e.g. success/failure) - Continuous Integration - Continuous Delivery - Continuous Deployment - Security in Software Supply Chain - Pipeline standardization - Interoperability in CI/CD - Lessons learned Cool Tools (good candidates for lightning talks): - Project showcases, modern tooling - How your open source tool made developing quality software better - What tools do you use to setup your CI/CD - Combining projects/plugins/tools to build amazing things "Not enough people in the open source community know how to use $X, but here's a tutorial on how to use $X to make your project better." **Where** FOSDEM 2025 will be hosted in person at ULB Solbosch Campus, Brussels, Belgium on February 1st and 2nd 2025. **When** - CFP Submission Deadline: 23:59 CET, 01 December 2024 - Schedule Announced: 15 December 2024 - Presentations: 1st February 2025 **How** - The reference time will be Brussels local time (CET) - Talks will be delivered live, no pre-recorded talks - Q/A session will be live - Talks will be streamed Please submit one (or more) 20-30 minute talk proposal(s) OR one (or more) 10 minute lightning talk proposal(s) by*23:59 CET on December 1st 2024*. We will notify all those submitting proposals about their acceptance by December 15th 2024. To submit a talk proposal (you can submit multiple proposals if you'd like) use Pretalx, the FOSDEM paper submission system -> https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/. Be sure to select "Testing and Continuous delivery" otherwise we won't see it! For more information please seehttps://fosdem-testingautomation.github.io/ Regards, Alex
